How Safety position may look next year!

Jenkins gets hurt every game. Our depth there might be more frightening than our DL depth for next year. For anyone that thinks we improve on D next year is out of their mind.

I won't make anymore solid proclamations -- I learned my lesson. But I would be willing to bet that the defense is markedly better from a personnel standpoint. Assuming we get every dline recruit on board, those guys represent a significant upgrade as frosh. I think Chick moves inside. I think we have a couple of gazelles on the outside. Our secondary -- at least the starting unit -- will absolutely be better. No Rogers. No Highsmith. Burns (one of the two truly elite athletes on our team) with a year under his belt should be potentially scary. Howard taking the next step to All-ACC status. Bush needs to get back and Carter needs to emerge. In my opinion, LB will be the biggest unknown -- and in this scheme, the most important factor in our improvement. But overall, coaching aside, I don't see how we don't improve.

No. Just stop. It's november and we're already starting with the annual offseason overhype-athon of the incoming true freshmen. I don't know how many years we have to go through the same thing regarding incoming true freshmen but you can't rely on them to upgrade your team (outside a few positions, like wr or rb). True freshmen DL don't come right in and start kicking ***. Look at AQM this year. Everyone got their boners all worked up talking about him having all these sacks and terrorizing qbs. Meanwhile the guy is exactly what one should expect from a true freshmen, shows some talent and promise, but is mostly overmatched going against bigger more experienced players. In other words, not entirely ready. It'll be the same thing with the true freshmen on the DL next year. And the year after and every other year...forever.

The defense can be better next year due to new coaches but probably not due to personnel. We lose 5 of our top 8 on the 2 deep on the DL. We need to hope that the juco dl pans out and some of the other dl that didn't play this year, like hamilton can ball cause we're going to need them. Then we need to hope that guys like kirby and grace, who have played sparingly, can step in and play well. We need 2012 deon bush back, cause 2013 Bush looks like 2012 kacy rodgers and 20-any year aj highsmith. But most of all we need a new dc and new scheme otherwise I can guarantee you that our d will look eerily similar to this year and last.

dallas will move back over there..

I can actually see this and wouldnt be mad... He's a headhunter with good instincts and with the haul of RB's coming in it makes sense

He's also tiny. No thanks.

So was the Bullet Bob Sanders and Ronde Barber.

Not saying he will play like them but at 5'9/5'10 there have been others who have done it.

My guess with a healthy Duke, Yearby, Powell and Edwards he may not be needed at the position.

so was mike doss (blasphemy, I know) so was Blaine bishop

not comparing, but 5'9-5'10 absolutely can play safety and DC lays the wood ALL DAY

I've seen DC in person on multiple occasions. He's just too small. I'm not opposed to the idea, but I just don't want more tiny safeties back there a la Highsmith who constantly have height and size disadvantages against WRs.

F*ck off. I don't need to conform to any prevailing school of thought. I can think independently, thank you. And the personnel will be better. The post explicitly carved out the coaching factor -- that's been discussed ad naseum. On paper, this defense will be more talented. Upgrades in athleticism at safety, corner, and line.

I understand what you are saying.

Highsmith's MAJOR issue is he sucks. The height and size disadvantage doesn't have that much to do with his lack of football skills.

IMO, I rather have DC contributing more and I believe he will get lost in the shuffle at RB.

Agree with dycane. The personnel will be better. (And honestly, it can't get worse.)

For example, safety position should see upgrade. Staff insists on either Rodgers/Highsmith to be paired with either Jenkins/Bush. We never have both Jenkins and Bush on the field, both of whom are far better athletes than Rodgers/Highsmith.

Appreciate Shayon's contribution, but if his reps are replaced by AQM/McCord, you've significantly improved athleticism and playmaking abilities on D.

We need guys to make jumps next season. I'm looking at Burns, Carter, Blue, Hope, Dortch, Grace, Kirby, etc. We should be more athletic and dynamic next year.

He may get lost at shuffle at RB but who's to say he doesn't get lost in shuffle in secondary? Jenkins, Bush, and Carter will all see field before him. He's a good short yardage runner and staff trusts him.

JR-Jenkins, starter

JR-Bush, starter

SR-Fentress, just plug him in

SO-Carter, 2nd

FR-Lockley, 2nd, I would really like an update on him

FR-Gray, may not get in due to grades

FR-Mayes, S, CB

maybe: RL3, JUCO

I really think we need a JUCO Safety to come in next year and not a ok safety, we need the best JUCO safety in the JUCO ranks.
And from what someone said in another thread AG has his sights on 2 other Safeties, they are said to have us in there top 5.

A big smile came across my face when I read this and realized that Rodgers and Highsmith will be gone.

I just think with the early enrollees coming in and a possible 5th RB as well, he may get lost in the shuffle and be more of an asset at S.

I don't see what everyone sees in Jenkins. He is slow to diagnose plays, takes crappy angles, and plays soft. If he is starting next year we will be in trouble again.

What's disconcerting is the number of impact safeties we got coming in this recruiting class....0

Ha. Don't need to conform to any school of thought huh? That's like saying Dorito is a great defensive coordinator, then when people disagree with you, you tell them to fck off, I can think independently. It's been proven so many times that true freshmen dlinemen aren't ready that it's not debatable. So if that's what you're counting on for an upgrade next year, well you're going to be disappointed. I agree with you that the secondary will be better and it's possible that the front 7 is better but there are a lot of holes to fill there with guys that are largely unknowns, so who knows.

That robbing Peter to pay Paul.
