How Lucky Was Miami in 2013?

Losing your best player who just happens to be one of the most dynamic players in the country is lucky? Morris getting hurt against Savannah St was lucky? Losing Dorsett, who's one of the best deep route runners in the country on a fluke reverse is lucky? Didn't we play Louisville down 4 WRs? The Special teams gaffs in the VT anyone?

If Duke doesn't get hurt we win at least one more, if not two more games. Does that make me feel better about the D, NO!!!!!!!!!!!! But we were hardly lucky.

Which one, or two, of those blow outs would not have happened with Duke in the line-up?

Duke game was tied going into the 4th. Having to rely on Morris to throw the ball 50 times would put any team at a disadvantage.

Rushed for 28 yds on 24 attempts vs VT. Duke went for 100 on 11 carries the year before.

We were down every WR we had in the Lousiville game and rushed for 14 on 28 carries (.5 YPC...yes, that's .5 YPC).

Am I saying we win all of them them? NO! Am I saying AG is a great coach? NO! Am I saying that the defense wasn't atrocious? NO!
But if you don't think having Duke Johnson in the lineup would've made a difference in games you're crazy.

I really do agree and believe if Duke Johnson was still playing. We could have beat Duke and Virginia Tech. Call me crazy but it's very true. Not to mention Coley went down in these games, we were missing Dorsett too. All those guys impact the offense.

But it's part of the game. But I do think it was very possible.

We lost against Louisville in that second half cause we had no ground game, we would just give the ball back to them, so they had every chance. Duke would have impacted that game too.

Wouldn't have changed the FSU game much. We hanged in right early, but FSU was too deep. Can see a better opportunity agains them this year though.

We were a very unlucky team in my opinion last season.

Christ all mighty its SI.....**** those ******s..

Auburn was the lucky team....see game 11 and 12

Meh, I support the premise that we were lucky in a few close games but I'm not sure if that is predictive of anything that will happen this season. We're dealing with small sample sizes and different players at numerous positions -- most notably QB. The author himself acknowledges this in the conclusion. We could end up being even "luckier" this season over the course of 12 games.

Saying we beat Duke with Duke, while clearly an opinion, running the ball wasn't a problem against them. We went for 186 yards with DC getting 118 with a 6.1 average.

We couldn't run the ball against VT, seriously doubt Duke would've changed that.

Same with the 'Ville. They didn't have to worry about our passing game, keyed on the run, and Duke isn't 10x the player the other backs we have are. Even if he was, he'd only average 5 yards a run in that case since as one noted, we went for .5 a rush that game.

Now adding in other missing players, heck, why not hope for a healthy Morris while we're at it. Every team has injuries, but I don't believe in either game one playe (even Duke who's yet to do anything special against a quality/highly ranked opponent) would've turned decisive losses into wins. Perhaps it would've been closer on the scoreboard, but in all those games....the loss was any sort of defense being played.

So if DC and Co were crushing It what do you think DJ would've been doing against them? Do you think Morris would've had to throw the ball 50 times? The game was tied going into the 4th and the ball had to be put in SM's hands and we know how that worked out.

As far as VT goes, Duke went for 100 the year before on 11 carries so YES, i do think he would've made a difference.

I'd like to see what would've happened if we had Duke back and healthy WR's against L'ville. I still think we lose but it would've been closer.

Too many variables... Most of all 2014 team is different than 2013, and all our opponents teams are different as well....

This "luck" statement is one of the most ridiculous statement fans make. And always used to devalue the accomplishments of the team they are aiming this at. In this case the anti-Golden brigade, which is sad in that these are supposed fans of the program, who are throwing out arguments against their own team just because of their dislike of the coach.

I am not here to argue the point of Golden, yes I do believe he can be successful, I was excited and actually wanted him to be the coach at the time of his hiring, you can ask JediMasterCane, I understand the philosophy of what he is trying to do (though not a big fan) but it does work. BUT I AM ALSO IN THE CAMP THAT THIS IS THE YEAR TO PUT UP OR SHUT UP AND GTFOH IF HE FAILS.

With that said, back to the "luck" nonsense, and it is nonsense, because NO TEAM, AGAIN NO TEAM, who has a winning season, and by that I say 8 wins or up, goes through that season without a game or two or even 3, without a few good breaks going their way to help them win. Now did they put themselves in position to catch them? That is up to you, the pro Miami crowd will say yes, and the anti-Golden will say no. But make no mistake that EVERY winning season some "luck" befell them. No championship team goes a full season without a few breaks, none. **** 2001 we caught a huge break against an inferior BC team. It happens to all winning teams.

This is maybe 5th grade logic at best. What you did last season has nothing to do with this season. It's like saying that because you flipped tails that the odds are greater you'll flip heads the next time--even though it's still 50/50. Just plain dumb.

"Miami finished 3-0 in one-score games in 2013, including one of the luckiest wins I’ve ever witnessed in a cardiac arrest-inducing 21-16 win against Florida. (Thanks, Jeff Driskel!!)"

This is where I dismissed the entire article.
Has this guy only watched like 5 games ever? Lucky is a Doug Flutie hail mary...not forcing turnovers against a dismal offense. Floriduh got lucky to get 16 points.
And the whole thing about points scored vs points surrendered in the ACC doesn't cut the mustard. Miami gave up half those points in 3 of the 8 games. If you're not going to somehow add equalization weight to the points scored by the eventual undefeated national champion then your premise is dismissed. I'm far more worried by the 26 points Virginia scored.. or the 31 points Pittsburgh scored than the 41 FSU scored. I expect a Heisman winner on a NC team to get his. If they can't start shutting down cheese doodle offenses, forget beating FSU and Louisville. Want to show me some improvement, stop letting cellar dwelling ****** offenses move up and down the field.

Morris completed 57% of his passes. Due for a QB that completes 70%.

This whole thing could be a helluva MEME.

How you say Morris injury was unlucky but having him throw a bunch when he got healthy was also unlucky?

Id say his injury was unlucky as were dorsett and Duke.

We'd probably have one another game without those injuries.

But we'd have won three more with a different DC/

Very simply. Morris is not a great QB but when he plays hurt, he's even more of a liability. Go watch UNC. But if he has to throw 50'times because his workhorse and most dynamic offensive weapon is hurt, then you're fked.

I complety disagree about a different DC winning 3 more games . Like all of a sudden Gaines, Cornelius, KC, AJ and the interior DL starts playing like all Americans? I doubt that. The Duke game I'll give you, but not by much. We still get slaughtered in the L'ville game because we were missing half of our offense.

So many misunderstand the article.

So many haven't taken Statistics 101.

Dear God.

I'd like to see what would've happened if we had Duke back and healthy WR's against L'ville. I still think we lose but it would've been closer.

Against Duke, we had a viable rushing attack, sure Duke would've probably done better, but it wasn't rushing the ball that was the problem. It was **** poor QB'ing combined with atrocious defense. Average defense could've won that game in the 4th, but we all know what happened.

It doesn't matter what Duke did against VT the previous year. They knew the key to stopping us on offense was to stop the run, let Morris be Morris, and call it a game. What they did to our rushing game was par for the course last year for them. They were a different kind of animal when they decided to shut the run down. They held Bama (a much better running game than ours) under 100 yards on 38 carries. Duke wouldn't have mattered in that game either.

Finally the 'Ville. They followed the VT gameplan and did a fantastic job of it. As I said, more weapons would've probably made it closer, but Duke isn't superman and against high ranked opponents, he's still yet to show up.

You're missing the point, the defense is what could've won us more games in combination with a few other factors. Healthy Duke or not, doesn't matter in those losses, those were on the defense.

Bottom line: While it’s entirely possible for this team to defy expectations, last year the Hurricanes were quite lucky and that unfortunately means it’s fair to expect at least a modest drop-off in quality of play this year.

Because we were "lucky" last year, we should expect the team to play worse this year.

WORST. LOGIC. EVER.

Sort of a silly article. IMO, the only categories discussed that could be attributed to "luck" (whatever that really is) would be the fumbles recovered and injury statistics. The rest is attributable to skill level, preparation and execution. "Luck" favors the prepared.
