What about Ocho Cinco? He loves Miami too and he doesn't have **** going on.
Lamar is dead serious about being a collegiate coach. From what I gathered the last time I got to talk with him (Duke game, Thanksgiving weekend), he wants to eventually get back to Miami...but he wants to build himself up as a coach and learn as much as possible. He is as driven to be a great coach as he was driven to be the great WR he was while at UM. His move to WKU to learn from Petrino doesn't surprise me at all. He wants to sponge as much up from really great coaches as he can before he gets back to Miami.
And as a candidate for our opening, I'd fight for him. He coached at Hampton before WKU, and by all accounts did a good job there not only coaching but as a recruiter too. He understands the time commitment that it takes to be a successful coach, and embraces it.
Dude still has major swagger too. He told me a story about a kid he recruited to come to Hampton...he knew he didn't have a shot as the kid was a BCS level player. So, he is at the kid's school having a conversation with him...and all the sudden, another coach from another school rudely interrupted their conversation in order to shut out Lamar. Lamar said he waited until the other coach was done and then pulled the guy aside away from the kid. Lamar held up his hand with his Miami MNC rings on and asked the other coach: "Do you have any of these?" The other coach said no, and Lamar told him that until he had any rings, he had NO business interrupting him when talking to a recruit, because even if he was the coach at Hampton instead of a BCS school...titles do the talking. Gotta love that swagger.
Why would we hire guys with no big time coaching experience, guys from WKU, guys from HS, to replace a guy that we got from the NFL? The homerism on here is scary.
I'd happily have Lamar, Irvin, Lewis, Dorsey, etc. come on the staff. As GA's. But they are all a long way away from being ready to be a full time position coach at a school like Miami. Barrow paid his dues as a coordinator in HS first and had a very difficult learning curve when he arrived. And he's the exception to the rule.
Furthermore, I'd venture a guess that MOST (not all) aren't interested in the 80 hour grinding weeks the job entails.

He coached Homestead HS for one year.
Lamar Thomas coached three years in HS and two years as a collegiate WR Coach and has moved on to Bobby Petrinos staff.
Ken Dorsey was essentially a play runner his entire NFL career (essentially an OC/QBC intern), trained two first round picks, and is still being used by the pro game.
And...you'd want Lamar and Dorsey to come on as a GA? lol Meanwhile, taking away the primary reason why you'd hire these guys...to be recruiters?
So this site has mods. Outstanding

I'm not going to dump on Dorsey or Lamar because they were both noble warriors for the Canes.
Their legacy speaks for themselves.
However, Bomb makes good points in this thread and subject, which is this is NOT a program for
on-the-job training.
Yeah, it's nice to have former Cane greats returning to their alma-mater bringing their love, loyalty and
UM/NFL experience to the program.
But they should start at a smaller program or at least at the GradAsst level before using up one of the
limited full-time coaching slots.
Just because you were a great player at the UM and/or NFL, it does not mean you will be a great coach
college football coach.
These folks need to work their way up, and it would be nice if they cut their teeth elsewhere, getting exposed
to different systems, schemes, recruiting areas, etc.

How long did Josh Heupel have to apprentice at OU before they finally let him be the OC? Several years. He climbed the ranks, and our former players should do the same. Dorsey would be well-served to try to hook on with an offensive genius like Petrino and learn from him.
