horrible game plan on both sides - offense included

I’ve posted this almost every week since VT

Go up big, start getting cute and abandon the run, stall out, let opponents back in the game, wash, rinse, repeat

Mind boggling. Can’t put any opponent away with our offense like we should have
I was sitting right behind Miami’s bench yesterday. Knew it was over after we went up 21-7 and he dials up that 3 and out with the personnel grouping he went to. I’ve never seen a team so consistently stop doing what is successful. Martinez should have run for 200 yards + yesterday. The 2 2nd quarter drives were inexcusable. The first one should have been the Martinez show just to eat some clock. Instead we go with Lyle, McCormick, and Brown and go 3 and out. The second we hit a big play to X then cam scrambles for a couple. 2nd down play was a dive up the middle by Lyle for 1 or 2. 3rd was an incompletion.

I don’t know why you would go away from the heavy run with Martinez. Not only do you eat some clock and wear down their defense but you take their crowd out of it. I was there and that place was loud. Probably the loudest stadium they’ve been in this year. When we were up 21-0 and they scored the crowd started coming back. We needed a drive there and that place would have emptied out at half if we’re up 28-7 or 35-14.

They said on the broadcast it was like 119 decibels. Up there with Neyland and Death Valley

I've said it before but the defense did what we expected (gave up 35 points to Syracuse).

The offense only scoring 38 was more disappointing. Especially since they also GAVE UP 7 points.

The offense scored 21 points in the first 17 minutes..then 17 points the next 43 minutes while also giving up 7 points. So the offense only netted 10 points in the last 43 minutes of the game.

Everybody knew going on the defense was going to give up yards and points. They had a takeaway and a few forced punts and gave up 35 points..yes that all sucks and isn't ok but it's what we expected.

The offense is the unit that didn't perform to expectations yesterday. We needed 50+ against Duke and Louisville to win.

Two games we lost were on the road and our most reliable player fumbled at a critical moment in the second half.

Shouldn’t have come to that. This offense wasn’t stopped by Syracuse, it was stopped by questionable substitutions, workload, and play calling. If we hammered the run with Martinez after we went up 21-7 we’d have walked out of there with a 2-3 TD win.

Serious question - who makes the calls on the rotations on both sides of the ball? Do they chart it out ahead of time and stick to it, or does position coaches have input or is it all coordinator?

That should determine who should go as well.
Dawson has said in the weekly pressers that he relies on and trusts the position coaches re: substitutions. I don't fault Dawson for the game he called - his decisions were reasonable and consistent with how he's coached the entire year. Passing was easy against them. So was running. We needed to score a lot more than 21 points to win that game. He called a mix of pass and runs and RPOs. He did his job well. It's not his job to make decisions that are head coaching decisions during the game.

Mario is the head coach. We needed him to meddle and tell Dawson and Merritt to quit playing the true freshman (whom there is a 9 page thread on this board from last week about how he needs to play more down the stretch), and instead play caveman football and run the ball up the gut with #6 on nearly every play.

I love Coach and will root for his success here till the wheels fall off, but this is the problem with him: he doesn't give us an edge during the game. This was the biggest game our team has played in decades and our head coach either didn't recognize or didn't force his way when it was obvious the best way to escape the Dome with a win (21-7 or 21-14 at the latest) was to hand the ball off #6 again and again....and again.

I heard all week on here Lyle needs Martinez carries in first half, lmaoo..

That Lyle, Mccormmick, Brown three and out sequence is forever burned in my mind.. Im like why is Lyle in the game, their offense has juice, this is NOT the time to give participation reps..

Cam Passing is what got us 21-0 so dont get that issue, at end of 1st George had 100 yards.. We should of kept our FOOT ON GAS. We tried to be balanced and get guys in, Bell should have played less, this was not his game, when I saw even Maugoia and our DE covering their best player #1 isolated.. I knew we dont even have gameplan on defense, offense cant waste a series.. This was game we had to tell youngin just cheer the lead dawgs on..

I see the 2nd qtr lull starts because we start trying to get other guys reps. We go up 21-0 to start 2nd qtr, they score to make it 21-7 and instead of locking in and sticking with gameplan, we decide 2nd qtr to bring out Lyle and get him touches, 3 and out punt after lyle, mccormmick, brown sequence then 21-14. We bring lyle back out and we dont do anything again til tied up and 3rd qtr. Martinez gets no touches in 2nd and we wonder why we struggle.
Exactly. And this is the “self scouting” that we told happens all the time. He is all bull**** and just rams his head over and over expecting different results. I pontificate, his recruiting style is exactly the same. It works from time to time cause of persistence, not creativity or adaptability of process.

Analogous to a BDR or sales person that gets a sale from persistence only not adoption or adaptation to clear strategies that will iterate, optimally, over time to market conditions.

The Miami Dolphins and Tua have been able to change their offense to ball-control after defenses adjusted last season. Despite that being Mario's identity, Dawson and co. haven't been able to down-shift and run the ball consistently.

Neither the Dolphins nor 'Canes can do anything vs good teams, but yeah at least the Dolphins beat up on the bad ones

How pathetic. Scoring 38 not being enough to beat this Syracuse team. Even with that slow second quarter we still had the chance snatch the lead back. Weak *** defense actually gets a turnover and then X fumbles and they turn it into a TD. That was the death blow

I think if you told him 7-8 and his first 3-4 went that poorly you can say "ok bud, we tried"
You could be right. But listen to how insane that sounds.

If you had a 3rd string true freshman demanding touches in the biggest game of your coaching career here, and you folded and gave it to him, you and that selfish *** kid should be shown the door.

But we were running it. I’m not saying just run into the pile 3x in a row. But you pull out Martinez who was having his way and don’t use him for 1.5 quarters. Instead we went with Lyle, who is a good back but not a battering ram like Martinez. Their D was juiced up after their 1st TD. We played right into their hands and went soft. Should have come out and kept feeding X, JG, Martinez, and Arroyo. They couldn’t stop us if we did. Like I said if we went down and scored to make it 28-7 it forces them to start to take chances. Even if they make it 28-14 we got the ball with just under 4 minutes. Again do the same stuff. We go up 31/35-14 into the half and that place would have been quiet. Make them stop you with your #1 groupings on the field which they didn’t do until we were under pressure in the second half.

Couldn’t agree more about a **** game plan. First off you have to plan around the **** D. Might not have been exciting but running scoring and eating clock was the best option. Imo

AoftWe lose a game and yall start blaming EVERYBODY. 🙄
