DT's are easily the most retarded players on a football team. It's not even close.

They have the least complicated job too I would think. Yet maybe the most important job in CFB

Yes, very important. If you're DTs are not good, you're LBs get blocked. Then you're screwed. That's the first thing I learned about DT in high school. Protect the LBs. I don't know if it's changed much. There wasn't as much passing then.

cause the state can't afford it

I think the Juco system in Florida is fairly young. I was a kid when I first started hearing about Jucos. Miami-Dade was started in 1959. I think the Juco systems in states like Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma and California had been in existence and with football by then. I guess they so no real need to put in football. I don't know whether there were other Jucos in Florida much before '59. I think it might have been a big movement that started in the late '50's. They probably had no interest in putting in football. Why, I don't know.

By the early '60's, or maybe earlier, UM was already bringing in Juco transfers to play for us. I wish I could read a history somewhere that would explain why we don't have juco football in such a big juco system. It's got to be pretty expensive, with bigger rosters and more equipment. It's cheaper to travel with a basketball team than a football team.

Here's an article from a California newspaper about the juco football system out there. Outside of California, most players come from Florida. The newspaper compiled a database of 2011 California Juco rosters. I searched the database for Florida players, and it seems a disproportionate number are skill positions, not the line positions. You can click through to the database from the article. (You will need to scroll down to see it after you click through. You might think you got a blank page).

The article states that Florida law prohibits Juco football and that is from a 1985 law. I know the Florida Jucos didn't have football before that. I guess Florida is less likely to spend money on discretionary programs than California. California has a very high state personal income tax, I don't think Florida has an income tax at all, does it?

Anyway, don't expect Juco football in Florida anytime soon.
