Heurtelou

We brought in some guys up front and let's be honest, guys like Earl Moore and King started games for us two years ago but are fighting hard just to see the field. That says a lot right there.

Agree.

I mentioned that last year. It also says a lot when a 3rd string DT from UVA can walk in off the street and start for us. If people want to blame Golden for not recruiting better at DT, fine. But the talent at that spot has not been good.

I honestly don't know what to expect this year, but a few things give me hope:

1. We've significantly improved the middle of the defense: DT, ILB, Safety.
2. This is probably the fastest defense we've had in a long time.
3. Almost the entire two-deep returns at all three levels.

When you saw how good Porter looked, that's when it really sunk in. All due respect but Porter is a contributor, not a star, and he looked like a world beater compared to the rest of the guys. It certainly falls on Golden but to his credit he tried and may have succeeded slightly, going the most difficult route which is JUCO. He's playing with fire there but guys like Wyche and Heurt could be something here by the time they leave. Kamalu was a sort of consolation prize with all the guys we missed that year but he looks ready to make an impact.

The fact that Courtel Jenkins is in the mix as a true freshman bodes well for the future.

Plus, I think we're going to see more and more nickel packages as teams continue to move away from two-back personnel. Having guys like Chad, Moten, and Kamalu inside should give us an interior rush that we've lacked for a long-*** time.

Courtel was a steal for us. It really was an example of us just getting out there and finding someone before anyone else did. His talent is plain as day, a better version of Porter in the future IMO.

I don't believe we are going to know a **** thing about this team until several games into the season.

For all the bullsh*t about "we need to come out this way, or that way", you don't know how a team is going to respond, until it gets punched in the mouth, until it has some "trap" games, where everyone assumes they should win, but the other team is scrappy, and you are probably overrated.

We came out last year like Gangbusters. We played a **** good UF Defense before their injuries and we won a real scrappy game. Many of us thought we really looked like a Canes team should. And then as the season went on, we saw holes and problems emerging.

So we really don't know what we have. We could come out like gang busters and destroy UL, only to sh*t the bed again. OR, we could look like @SS, like even the 2000 team did in the first half at Washington, and still turn it around later.

IMO the keys to this season will be as follows. 1. QB play. 2. LB depth. 3 DL play 4. Injuries. We wont know who we are until late in the year. We were holding our own and ranked pretty high, even stood toe to toe with FSU in Tally, until Duke got hurt, and then Morris started choking, the defense wilted, and the wheels came off the bus.

There are a lot of moving parts to this thing, and some variables that can either make us really have a good year, or send us off a cliff.

You're making WAY WAY more of what I said den it is, but I agree with you in general, just wasn't my point

either way the canes certainly have more team depth to be able to withstand the rigors of a season....

for the first time in what seems like a decade....

so we were up in the bowl game making plays on D until they made adjustments and we didnt? The 3 and outs killed us too

The biggest positive from this camp has been the emergence of Heurtelou.

If he plays in games like he has in practice, we have a legitimate starting nose.

And if Wyche means all the tough talk he has laid out it should motivate him to be a better player as well.

Don't get me excited because if he doesn't perform **** we hit.

people are sleeping on this kid because his recruitment was quiet. he had some big offers and is motivated.

I had no idea he had big offers, do tell.

Claimed offers from Auburn, Nebraska, Kansas St (the JUCO warriors), Tennessee, Wisconsin to name a few

took OVs to Missouri, Rutgers, and Tenn

Were they sending the duffles? Like u kno how people say Bama offered them but when Bama really wants someone they send the stable, were auburn or any team really pushing for the kid?

If Pinkel wanted him that's good enough for me. That dude has a monster eye for talent especially along the DLine. He's done more with second tier recruits than just about anyone over the last decade.

Him and Harbaugh.

Golden and Dorito have some chess pieces, lets see if they stop playing checkers.
