It's going to take about 5 minutes Labor Day night to see if this team truly is any different than the past. Any judgements waiting longer than that are just wasting time.

Didn't we get a safety and 3 & out in our first 2 defensive series vs Louisville in the RAB..?

I think your right Bush tackled Teddy in the end zone.

Bush had a safety. We came out aggressive. Probably the most aggressive we saw all season. They could not sustain it for the whole game.

The defense was pretty bad, but there was no way we were winning that game with our offense. We didn't convert a single third down that game.

5 minutes huh? 5 minutes into the bowl game against these same guys we were up 2 nothing, and had stoned their offense twice already.

I don't give a **** about last season. All we keep hearing about is how different this team is physically and emotionally. You really want to be a smartass about 5 minutes then fine but you know exactly what I'm getting at. You're going to know right away if this team is finally the physical one we hear about. No more true freshmen lining up at DT or castoffs, these are supposed to be grown ups out there. Won't take long.

Im ridin with you on this one homie. We gonna know real quick if this team is any different than last year.

Exactly. Started with a safety. Then a three and out. Then a few drives holding them to field goals. Meanwhile the offense did absolutely nothing, lots of three and outs, and the defense couldn't sustain for the rest of the game and fell apart.

I mean it's not like I'm saying we can determine our season in 5 minutes. What my point is last year I felt like we had a lot of important guys that were in a transition period for what we wanted of them. Chick, Howard, McCord, Kirby to name a few. These guys should be hitting those physical peaks that will allow them to do what the coaches have assured us all they are supposed to do. We brought in some guys up front and let's be honest, guys like Earl Moore and King started games for us two years ago but are fighting hard just to see the field. That says a lot right there.

I just want to see the proof on the field that some of these guys really are ready for their roles and we stop asking things from guys that just simply aren't ready.

****. I'm ready to run through a wall.

Until I see this defense under live fire I'll remain concerned. But, I believe we have sig nif fa "can" ly improved along the defensive front at Nose, tackle and DE. Limited depth, but good and fast linebackers. Secondary is probably our most competitive positions. I just don't think it possible to be as bad as we were with the upgrades in talent. The main thing that worries me is D'Nofrio! Not sure he can match wits with good OC's.

I agree. I think we are also gonna find out real quick what the mentality of this team is as well as where the D line and O line are as units. Are these guys going to be able to impose their will on Louisville or are we gonna see the same **** show from last season where both lines got their **** pushed in?

I'm excited. Sept 1st can't get here soon enough. I ******* love college football. IMO, best sport at any level, in the world.

We got what you meant bruh..Cats are just tryna be smart a$$es. If you been a Cane fan longer then 20 years YOU KNOW. Its in the air..its in their body language..you just know. That UL game..we were just playing ourselves. I knew we were gonna get our a$$es kicked even with those first 5 min of fools gold. The offense just didnt want to be there and the defense did. So the defense said, F it...and checked out right along with them. And the flood gates opened..

That UF game YOU KNEW we werent leaving there without a win. BOTH sides of the ball WANTED IT. I was at the game. That team wanted it BAD.

So yes, I will be able to tell if this team has changed or if this was all just BS offseason talk like usual.

Agree.

I mentioned that last year. It also says a lot when a 3rd string DT from UVA can walk in off the street and start for us. If people want to blame Golden for not recruiting better at DT, fine. But the talent at that spot has not been good.

I honestly don't know what to expect this year, but a few things give me hope:

1. We've significantly improved the middle of the defense: DT, ILB, Safety.
2. This is probably the fastest defense we've had in a long time.
3. Almost the entire two-deep returns at all three levels.

We were already so fast our guys were getting hit from behind with the possible interceptions.

Hope so. Its the coaches job to put good players in positions to succeed and we're finally getting to the point where we have enough weapons to compete.

I don't believe we are going to know a **** thing about this team until several games into the season.

For all the bullsh*t about "we need to come out this way, or that way", you don't know how a team is going to respond, until it gets punched in the mouth, until it has some "trap" games, where everyone assumes they should win, but the other team is scrappy, and you are probably overrated.

We came out last year like Gangbusters. We played a **** good UF Defense before their injuries and we won a real scrappy game. Many of us thought we really looked like a Canes team should. And then as the season went on, we saw holes and problems emerging.

So we really don't know what we have. We could come out like gang busters and destroy UL, only to sh*t the bed again. OR, we could look like @SS, like even the 2000 team did in the first half at Washington, and still turn it around later.

IMO the keys to this season will be as follows. 1. QB play. 2. LB depth. 3 DL play 4. Injuries. We wont know who we are until late in the year. We were holding our own and ranked pretty high, even stood toe to toe with FSU in Tally, until Duke got hurt, and then Morris started choking, the defense wilted, and the wheels came off the bus.

There are a lot of moving parts to this thing, and some variables that can either make us really have a good year, or send us off a cliff.

When you saw how good Porter looked, that's when it really sunk in. All due respect but Porter is a contributor, not a star, and he looked like a world beater compared to the rest of the guys. It certainly falls on Golden but to his credit he tried and may have succeeded slightly, going the most difficult route which is JUCO. He's playing with fire there but guys like Wyche and Heurt could be something here by the time they leave. Kamalu was a sort of consolation prize with all the guys we missed that year but he looks ready to make an impact.
