NCAA's botched probe not end for Miami
By Heather Dinich | ESPN.com

February, 18, 2013

NCAA president Mark Emmert is not giving up.

Nevermind that 13 interviews have officially been excluded from the NCAA’s original investigation into Miami.

Forget that portions of 12 interviews have been excluded and “some factual allegations were entirely removed.”

Don’t worry, Miami fans. Nobody will see that tainted evidence in the final report. The NCAA apparently has White-Out. Not enough, though, to scrap the entire case and declare a mistrial. Despite the recent 52-page report that detailed the NCAA’s unprecedented *****-up, Emmert still has roughly 80 percent of what he wants you to believe is a valid investigation into Miami’s athletic department, and he plans on using it.

“The intention is to move forward with this case,” Emmert said. “There’s still a lot of information that’s available that has in no way been tainted by this incident.”

Good luck getting anyone outside the NCAA to actually believe it. The problem for Miami, though, is that the only people who have to be convinced are the ones in Indianapolis.

The external “Enforcement Review Report” has shaken the NCAA’s credibility to its core, and has left many if not all outside the organization with no faith or trust in its ability to fairly judge Miami in this case. And it’s not going to matter one single bit, because the NCAA’s committee on infractions is pressing on. Miami is going to receive a notice of allegations. And in typical NCAA fashion, there has been no timetable set for it.

“The committee will now move forward,” Emmert said. “I won’t set a timeline on that, but they’re moving forward with dispatch.”

Maybe the NCAA will have another president by the time Miami’s case is over. Heck, the United States has already sworn one in.

Despite the program’s own wrongdoing, Miami fans have every right to be angry. It’s amazing Al Golden hasn’t turned his back and walked right out. He’s had to recruit three classes into this mess. Heck, even inner-city Philadelphia has to be sounding good right about now. Miami has followed the NCAA’s playbook on cooperation in this investigation every step of the way, while the NCAA reached a jaw-dropping new low with its investigative tactics. Instead of swinging back, Miami’s athletic department has punished itself with its tail between its legs: •Miami has given up two bowl games and what would have been the program's first ACC championship game appearance since joining the league.
•The Canes have reduced their official visits.
•They have reduced their contacts and evaluation days in the fall.
•They have reduced their own scholarships.

The NCAA? It fired a few high-ranking officials, vowed to be better, and said a notice of allegations is on its way.

You would think that Miami’s proactive approach, coupled with the NCAA’s botched investigation, would add up to a mistrial. Instead, in each of the past two teleconferences Emmert has had with the media regarding this incident, he has reiterated that the NCAA still has plenty of evidence against Miami and plans to move forward with it.

In a case that has redefined hypocrisy, the NCAA won’t relinquish its role as judge, despite the fact it was just found guilty.

Love the 80% crap....so if a team is forced to forfeit wins shouldn't they be able to quantify how many wins weren't tainted?

I predict a whole new level of Whoopingcane Heather worship and stalking in about 3...2...1....

Donna Shalala is the best thing that's ever happened to the U and she's a ******* P I M P Pimp. She's playing 3D chess and everyone else if playing go fish.

And yet we still haven't even played in an ACCCG, haven't been relevant in a decade, and have spent two years bending over a sawhorse to satisfy an organization that rather than being satisfied, is still trying to decide what color rubber glove to put over its fist, But she's playing 3D chess. Got it. Very rational.

I agree with Ethnic here for the most part. Under that woman's watch there have been 3 huge mistakes, from a football perspective, that have really set this program back (even before the Shapiro fiasco)

Extending Coker
Hiring Shannon
Extending Shannon.

Two coaches who you can argue are among the worst to be handed the keys to a division 1 program anywhere in the country over the last 15 years. Two coaches who were never even considered for another major job, despite the fact their resume's read "U of M head coach". ****...one of those 2 is even rocking a National Championship title.

Conversely I'm fully aware that overall from the school's perspective she's done A LOT of good for the school. She excels in the political forum....so this is where I expect her to come through and make up for those mistakes by using her "power/connections" to make this NCAA investigation go away.

But let's please stop acting like she's played this beautifully. At the end of the day we're staring at an investigation that hasn't gone away and all indications are the NCAA is still going to try to rape us. If this is all part of that master plan and she's about to turn the turn on the NCAA...well....we're watching.

If that turns out to be the case I think most rational Cane fans will forgive her for those 3 aforementioned sins....at least I will. But at this point I'm still skeptical.

You are confusing the Athletic Director with the President of the university. Those three errors were AD errors, Shalala just gives the AD the signed check, the AD chooses who it goes to. The President of the university has more important things to do, as in run the university

LMAO. You are seriously claiming that DS didn't have a role in the hiring of Coker and Shannon (and Golden)? Wow.

Donna Shalala herself is embarrassed by your flailing effort to defend her as if she's a religious figure. She's not perfect, and people pointing out her imperfections in the face of idiotic statements to the contrary isn't wrong. If you can't handle that level of discussion, then that's really your emotional and intellectual deficiency, not something you should be blabbering at other people about. And just because she may have done a good job with the U's academic standing does not mean she has therefore been flawless in respect of the football program, which, in case you haven't noted, is pretty much the subject of this board and site. So please, take your quivering whimpering emotional *** out of this thread. Your outburst is embarrassing.
