Head Coach Candidates

Five coaching candidates I would like Miami to go after:

Ben McCollum - Drake HC

Anthony Grant - Dayton HC

Chris Caputo - George Washington HC

Sean Miller - Xavier HC

Frank Martin - UMass HC

Frank Martin...LMAO!
Now there is a knee slapper.

I shouldn't laugh too hard because this is, after all UM.

He's done a pretty good job at Dayton winning nearly 70% of his games there.

His Bama stint was over 10 years ago, it's a little unfair to still hold that against him.

Especially since CBB was a lot different back then than it is now & it's not like Bama was paying for top level BBall recruits in the same way they were for FBall.
That’s fair. And again, I’m not watching Dayton the same way I was watching Bama at the time. But while he won at a decent clip at Alabama, a) the conference was absolute dog**** in his years there and b) the style of play was straight up hard to watch. Winning obviously comes first but I just personally don’t want the basketball team to be the equivalent of Iowa football. Bama has invested more in basketball over the past 10 years, sure. But they had enough talent on those teams. They weren’t scraping the bottom of the barrel.

And looking at their scoring numbers in his time at Dayton, it doesn’t seem like much has changed on the style of play front. Could be wrong.

Dayton won ~73% of their games in the 4 years before Grant was hired.

Grant is neither an up-and-comer nor an established program builder nor a proven commodity at the P4 level.

He has never turned around a program. He has continued success that he inherited at the mid major level (without any notable NCAAT runs EVER) and failed at Bama while they were investing resources trying to build a basketball program.

He isn’t going to open donor wallets, doesn’t bring any discernible schematic advantage, and failed in his only stint at the P4 level in a program with more resources than Miami.

This is my other concern. Other than Bama he’s won at places that are fairly easy to win, given other coaches’ success. I personally want someone that has shown they can lift a program, or someone that plays a brand of basketball that excites recruits and is fun to watch. Tony Bennett won all the time at UVA but I just don’t think many high level recruits want to play that kind of ball, and games in the 40s are brutal.

Anthony Grant did beat Larra back in 2021...

1. Will Wade, McNeese St. - The man is a program changer and a winner. Has won everywhere he's gone and knows how to go from last to first. With NIL now in play, shouldn't be any worries on NCAAA and illegal payments.
2. Ben McCollum, Drake - Hottest name in college basketball right now. Great track record at the D2 level, but super impressive the start he's gotten off to at Drake.
3. Bucky McMillan, Samford - Bucky Ball in Miami wouldn't be such a bad thing. A winning, uptempo style of play in the ACC could do wonders in recruiting. Has turned Samford into one of the top mid-majors in the country.

Wade is far and away the guy. Ignore the noise and make the hire.

You guys think it will be a after season hire?
They should be working the back channels now and doing their due diligence. The Final 4 isn't just a sporting event, it's also one of the biggest coaching conventions in the country. That's where most deals are finalized. I'd expect an announcement then, or at the earliest after season is over for the incoming HC. That's assuming our next hire is a current HC at the NCAA level.

You guys think Enfield could be enticed outta SMU after just one season?
Funny you mention him. I thought about him for a second, but just think he has a bit of an uphill climb based off how he finished at USC. IF he turns SMU around this year, who knows? First time I heard of Enfield was when he was coaching at FGCU and they upset us. We had a pretty good team then. I think we finished winning the ACC that year and getting to the Sweet 16.

Is Bob Richey from Furman ready for a step up to this level? They upset UVa in the tourney two years ago. Lost in conference tourney championship game to Samford last year, and Samford almost knocked off Kansas in the tourney the next week. His Paladins are off to an 11-1 start this year, with their only loss to Kansas..
