Has College Football Ever Seen a Better Offense?

Could you pull up 2008 Okla, The Bradford, Murray Gresham crew.. That offense was fun to watch, wonder how they stack up with these guys

Shiiiiid, another good one! Totally forgot about those guys!

2008 OU:
Avg. 548 ypg (1st)
Avg. 51.1 ppg (1st)
Avg. 349.4 passing/g (3rd)
Avg. 198.5 rushing/g (20th)
Passing Efficiency Rate: N/A
Avg. Margin of victory: 32.8

This OU team scored 60+ points in 5 straight games to end the season against Nebraska (9-4), TAMU (4-8), #2 TT (11-2), #11 OKSt (9-4), & #19 Mizzou (10-3).

I think this team escaped my memory b/c for the life of me, I have NO CLUE how these dudes scored only 14 points against UF in the Nat’l Title Game & I lost $$ twice on the O/U & I had OU winning.

That hit Major Wright put on Manny Johnson early on in the game had OU shook. Years later in an interview, MW said he could have easily gone for the ball, but he went for the receiver. He wanted to put fear into OU's team. Mission accomplished.

Realistically, LSU had so much freak talent on that team it’s hard for any offense to compare. We’re equal or better at QB, OL and RB but their WR advantage was just unfair. And I say that being a HUGE fan of our guys. Burrow had the luxury of just being able to throw it up for grabs and his guys would come down with it. We just don’t have NFL All Pros at wide receiver.

I might go as far to say this is the best offense in school history. It’s tough because most of our great offenses were in a different era of college football. I don’t like making direct comparisons between today’s modern offenses to stuff from 20+ years ago. I will say Cam Ward is the best quarterback we’ve ever had. He does things nobody we’ve ever had could.

I’m too young to have seen Kelly here, and it’s a different era but a first ballot Hall of Famer must be tough to beat

Put Cam Ward on the 2000 or 2001 UM team with all of those great WRs, TEs and running backs and that would be the greatest all time.

Miami 2001 had that great defense that scored I think 7 TDs that year. If the defense can get the other team 3 and out, it would leave the offense more time to score.

It drives me crazy to see our defense just let other teams drive up and down the field keeping Ward on the side line when he could be adding up the yards and TDs even more. Just tackle and stop playing five yards off their WRs giving them easy first downs.
The thing I think about sometimes is Cam behind that 2001 OLine…that would be insane. That was the best line ever. Dorsey was only sacked four times all season! Can you imagine with Cam’s wizardry? And then of course, add in all the skill players you mentioned above…

2001 team also scored on special teams a bunch too. It feels like it’s been a decade since we’ve done that. 😩

I’m taking about college performance. Cam isn’t in the NFL yet.

Running the Coker T? I don’t think so.

I have no doubt that Cam would have killed it with those guys but outside of Dre, the receiver room was weak. That was a run first offense that would set up deep shots to Andre Johnson and had Jeremy Shockey underneath and up the seams. Ethenic Sands and Kevin Beard weren’t as good as the guys we have today. Shockey led the team in receptions with 40.

The big 12 was exciting as **** back in the day. The PAC 10/12 got the “no defense” label but that was nothing compared to the weekly shootouts in the Big12.

If we play how we did in the second half against Duke consistently, I don’t see anyone stopping this offense more than 4 times in a game. Our running game is good right now. The threat of Martinez or Fletcher forcing 7 games into the box, makes Ward nearly unstoppable.
When someone does stop us come playoff time because of talent I can already hear the “Dawson isn’t calling a good game” crowd complaining. Because when you face equal talent it won’t be that easy anymore. But someone will point the finger at him I bet 100%. We will get stopped eventually or slowed down for sure

That’s why coaching matters. Eventually someone is going to match your talent. The coach who has the best game plan will win. The old days of one team hoarding all the best players are over. The best teams this year all have flaws. The portal and NIL have made it a lot more interesting.

Our guys are still hypnotized by bro style offense they missed the last 2 decades of the spread revolution.. kinda sad, A TON of us tried to help many see the light, fought the good fight but too many loved the fullback in the flat for 3 yards gain and punt play field position football..

Only way I can think of this question is being asked, came out of the same machine Reggie Bush came out of in Heisman house commercial.. soooooo many GREAT offenses last 15 years

I will say our offense with portal and limited time together STILL hasn't hit it's stride, there are still levels where we can hit and get better, God bless the air raid..

Got a dumb question. Does KC run a spread. I'm just curious because although they don't put up big numbers they just continue to win. I know Mahomes has a ton to do with it.

I still think we could kill teams using our TE's as a focal point of the offense.

Our tight ends have combined for 36 catches for 597 yards and 8 touchdowns. I’m curious how many teams have gotten more production from the position.
No I agree they have done well. But I think we could just go up and down the field on teams with them. Arroyo is a complete mismatch for any LB and so is Williams. Lofton is extremely talented anywhere you put him.

Wasn't there some questionable officiating on some goal line downs?

Dam just peep I quoted wrong post @canecrazy23

At the dna, Andy Reid is thought of as a west coast offense guy because he coached up under Mike Holdgren but he also was a GA way back when under Lavell Edwards at byu (which is who Hal Mumme went to when building air raid way back when) . Main thing is he is open and adaptable, he was one of first in NFL when most were knocking spread to adopt some of their stuff and incorporate from College and even high school.

Soo much soo he hired an NFL head coach (Brad Childress) to a position just to find spread plays (title "spread game analyst"), he embraced it early and pushed his coaches to be open and explore. He even allows his players in practice to bring plays/concepts and pushes them to explain why they should run it. I guess now his "system" is "west coast gun" offense.

Obvioulsly always evolving his use of shifts and motions, screens, is legendary. He been doing it a long time but the Mahomes marriage obviously puts it over the top.

Cam is Better.

Put Cam on that team and put Burrow on this one and it’s not even close. Burrow had the luxury of just being able to throw it up for grabs and his receivers would just come down with it. Cam doesn’t have that option. He has to buy time to get a receiver open and then throw accurately while scrambling. We rely on Cam to make so many plays. LSU relied on their wide receivers to make plays. Their quarterback just had to put the ball near them.
