Great Feldman Article on Beck

He has made some amazing throws the last couple of years. I think that if we can't get another elite WR talent and give him time in the pocket he can put up huge numbers. I like having Lyle and Fletcher sharing carrie's because they are different, last year Fletcher and Martinez were too alike. Also Lofton is a wild card that can really be a difference maker.

Thought just the opposite. Georgia lacked talent on offense, but assumed our defense would turn them into world beaters and Kirby’s defense would get some stops against our offense.

After seeing what GT did to Georgia I didn't think they could stop us.

I figured we would get pressure and shut down the run and it would all be in Backs hands and his receivers would have enough drops to force him to be superman. I don't think he does well there because he will force throws. He doesn't have to be superman at Miami. We will more protection and more of a balanced offense like UGA did in 2023.

The lack of true interest in Mateer was also interesting. Wonder if his camp generated it to drive up the price with Oklahoma.

Did they even mention Mateer? I felt like it was lazy journalism (I'm not a fat Manny fan), and inferred that Beck was Dawson's top guy after Mateer had committed to OU.

Guidry’s defense couldn’t stop anyone. Enough said.

The Mendoza part was interesting. I always thought in the back of my mind they could get him even after committing to Indiana. Also the fact that Miami wasn’t as high on Mateer as everyone on the board thought.

Yeah, that's bull****. I see that Dennis Smith is still feeding reporters false storylines.

We absolutely made a monster offer to Mateer.

Well, here's another one of those dopey "I'll believe anything if it is just on a pay website masquerading as a news article" porsts.

What a joke. Mateer was Plan A all along. Made him a huge offer before he visited Norman. He actually took LESS from Oklahoma than he was offered from BOTH Miami and North Carolina.

"Drive up the price with Oklahoma". Hilarious.

When Mario wants the word out, you know it’s going to Bruce Feldman

Exactly. UM alum Bruce Feldman. Who reported NOTHING on UM's QB recruiting until it was all over, and he got the half-story from Dennis Smith.

Fantastic.

Miami’s staff is still high on sophomore Emory Williams

In Williams, they believe they have a 6-5 prospect who is extremely accurate and made some big-boy throws to beat Clemson in 2023
🤐
That part screamed to me as an effort, by staff, to make sure that inside perception of Emory is still high, regardless. Ideally, you want 4 QBs in your room going into fall. Emory transfers out, and you've got two underclassmen that have never taken a snap in CFB as next men up.

remember how like a week ago half this website was ****ing and moaning about how we had “no plan” at QB?

We got lucky that Beck said yes.

Same spreading of his excellence all of 2024, so nothing new.

Makes sense ✊🏿

Beck is Justin Herbert. He can make all the throws. Will wow you with arm talent and some throws.

And then he'll inexplicably throw 4 INTs in a game.

As long as he's healthy, he is the best option for us. Big-game experience, was on 2 NC teams, so he saw what it takes (yeah, I know Stetson was the QB but that experience is a major plus) and has some athleticism to him. Finally, he has a chip on his shoulder in that he needs to prove himself and improve his draft stock

Here are some highlights:

“Dawson was not excited about any other quarterback who had entered the portal or was expected to enter the portal this offseason.”

“Miami, meanwhile, spent time trying to gather as much information as it could about Beck once he declared for the NFL Draft in late December, on the chance he ended up in the transfer portal instead. Studying the film, Dawson felt Beck’s 2023 season was elite. This year, Beck didn’t play as well, but the Bulldogs weren’t as good around him, especially without Brock Bowers or Ladd McConkeycatching passes. While Bowers and McConkey starred as rookies in the NFL, Georgia’s receivers led all Power 4 programs with 31 drops. The Bulldogs also dealt with injuries on their offensive line, allowing 1.79 sacks per game (58th among FBS programs).”

“Dawson also reached out to Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, who had been Beck’s coach at Georgia from 2020 to ’22. Monken had nothing but praise for Beck, calling him an elite talent.”

“South Dakota State’s Mark Gronowski, who had led the Jackrabbits to two FCS national titles, spoke with Miami. Dawson liked him and was going to fly up to Sioux Falls to see him, but the trip was canceled after he heard Gronowski might need surgery. Gronowski ended up signing with Iowa, and the Hawkeyesconfirmed he would have surgery in the coming weeks and would not begin on-field workouts until June.”

“Miami native Fernando Mendoza was another possibility for the Hurricanes. The former Cal starter had committed to Indiana right before Christmas. But even two weeks later, some Miami folks believed Mendoza would come home if the Hurricanes offered him. The Canes staff liked him, but in their eyes, he didn’t have Beck’s talent.”

Dawson must have thought at the time that Emory wasn’t that far from Mendoza. Obviously this was before the bowl game.

How do you know he was Plan A? And please dont say you read it on CIS.

Shows how thorough the process was. Speaking with Todd Monken and Brock Purdy’s QB coach about the injury. Dawson evaluated 10 quarterbacks. Liked Gronowski but was scared off my a surgery he is going to have.

It’s interesting to hear how the personnel department tracked dozens of quarterbacks and felt Beck clearly stood out based on the 23 tape. I’m curious those who aren’t fans of Beck would have preferred. Watching the playoffs I don’t see any quarterback better than him.
"...Miami’s staff is still high on sophomore Emory Williams DAW GAWD. In 2023, he beat Clemson in his first career start after an injury to Tyler Van Dyke and almost beat a Florida State team that went 13-1. But he didn’t look ready to take over for Ward when he replaced the Hurricanes’ NFL-bound QB in the second half of the Pop-Tarts Bowl..."
