He's just the latest. Every coach since Butch has been a useless ****.
And people wanted him out after year 3 too. Heavily impacted his decision to leave Miami for the NFL.
That's bull****. He chased the money. He chops it up there as one of his worst decisions. His words.
I don't know which was more important, I've got to think the money was, but boy, he took endless abuse from fans, including probably some oldtimers here who used to post on Grassy. God, it was awful. I felt sorry for the guy. Calling him "Bush," "Botch,"....I remember he broke down and started to cry at a press conference the hate was so bad. People don't remember that. I'd look for an excuse to leave, too.
If you blame Butch for lying, you've got to remember, by being a college football fan, you've pretty much sold your soul to the devil. The proof of it is spending more than a few casual minutes passing through on a message board. College football is a dishonest, corrupt, unethical out of control monster driven by millions and millions of dollars. It is exploitative and both enhances and ruins the lives of many young men, particularly from poor backgrounds. It is what it is. It's not the kingdom of saints. At least I admit my addiction to this sometimes very unsavory business. I admit, I also have loved it over the past fifty years, particularly UM's golden years over the last thirty years, but my devotion is becoming weaker and weaker, with what I see of ruined lives (read up on Brayden Lenius' grandfather, and what pro football did to him because he was black and wanted to be a QB) and the damaged brains. (Google an article in the last year or so on former UM LB, Jay Brophy, and how just a few years at UM and with the Dolphins gave him a 70 year old's brain in the body of a man who is only about 50). A friend's son spent ten years in the NFL and now has migraines...wonder what his future holds.
So, Butch was probably only performing the profession he selected as he learned in order to be successful.
It's probably pretty bad in the pros. When I was in law school back in the late 70's, a friend of mine who worked as a law clerk at the NFL Players Association said he had been at an arbitration concerning the Dolphins having cut a player while he was recovering from injury and my friend said Shula lied through his teeth. He felt he should tell me since he knew I was a Dolphin fan (we were in school in DC, so there were very few.)
People are very naïve.
All coaches lie. They lie and they're cutthroat. Especially the successful ones.
Erickson, JJ, Saban,..., they all lied about going to the NFL. Bobby Bowden lied about leaving West Virginia. Lou Holtz lied to numerous schools before bolting to better opportunities (and usually leaving his previous school under NCAA investigation). Of all the Miami coaches, Schnelly left UM in the biggest lurch. Howard left during the summer when it was next to impossible for Miami to be able to hire a replacement (it was unbelievably fortunate that Sam was able to hire JJ). And Schnelly essentially screwed up our '84 season by having Sam promise he wouldn't fire any UM coaches for one year.
It was no secret Butch had aspirations to leave Miami and go to Miami. Butch knew it. Paul Dee knew it. Every knowledgeable fan knew it. Butch's plan was to coach 3-5 more seasons, win a couple NCs, and get a huge payout by taking a premier NFL job.
And Dee and Davis always had a frosty relationship. And yes, Davis was a very arrogant man. But back '00, the football, basketball and baseball programs were doing well. Paul Dee felt infallible back then and he decided to play hardball with Davis's agent in the contract negotiations with a massive buyout provision. The problem was Dee misplaced his hand because Davis had all the leverage. So when Dee didn't want to back down, Davis got ****ed and took the Cleveland job.
And in retrospective, it was a terrible mistake by Dee. If Davis had stayed another 3-4 years, the talent would've kept stockpiled. Our player development would have continued. And Davis had promoted Chuck Pagano as DC. Pagano could've been groomed as a replacement to Davis. Unlike Coker who had a cardboard personality, Pagano would've made a great HC selection in the mid 2000s to replace Davis.
There's a lot of truth in this post.
