Glaring issue on defense

I honestly believe about half the comments and takes on this board are from dudes who only really know football from videos games and are literally expecting EA Sports results.
Can’t believe they are expecting us to not let Cal, GTech, L’Ville and Duke, VTech look like 2019 LSU. So delusional. He needs another 5 years to have a somewhat decent defense

Saying that a coach who is getting paid 10 mil a year and is in year 3 already is not at fault for the defense being booty juice is a very lazy take.

No it's not. In fact, your response is even lazier than the one I responded to. Fixing issues on a college football team is a lot more difficult than "address it in the offseason", which is the typical solution posed around here. Every team in America has weaknesses. Every one. But we're not supposed to have any because of our coach's salary?

Terrible response. Why the need for hyperbole if you have a valid point?

There is having issues and there is what’s we is going on with this defense. It should not be this big of a weakness in year 3. All this “it’s not that easy give him more time” is really soft and lazy.

What are you trying to say? Louisville has a good offense. The others did not look like 2019 LSU, but nice hyperbole. My comments were about expectations from some in our fan base who can’t accept anything less than 2001. We are 9-1 and a couple wins away from playoffs. We are far from perfect. However, so is everyone else. Fans that assume every portal entrant and every highly rated recruit should sign with us are being silly.

I didn't say "give him more time". Please only respond to what I write, k? Kirby Smart is in year nine and his team has issues. More time isn't an excuse or a solution. Putting a college football roster together isn't just going out and getting the people you need. There are 50 teams in play for any given kid.

Again, no one in college football fixed their issues in the offseason. Not one.

Jafari Harvey has 5 sacks and JHH has two sacks for SMU. Corey Flagg has 66 tackles for Missouri. We ran them out of town, and they all transferred to play for defenses that are better than us at this point.

Harvey and Hunte wouldn't have started over here, so they both made the right move. Corey Flagg was a miss on the coaching staff

Totally agree I wanted him to stay. He had a solid season last year but he wanted to get more snaps I don't blame him for leaving
Agreed. And probably like Colbie we have so much NIL to go around so you can’t just keep everyone with us wanting to revamp our DL

Unfortunately it’s not panning out like we hoped but Barrow has been top notch

All of you who are convinced that everyone is going to score a hundred on us and that we will lose to Syracuse, SMU, or both can make a lot of money if you really believe it.

Championship Game Winner

  • Miami Florida (#12) +105
  • SMU (#14) +140
  • Clemson (#17) +350

Obviously the problem is not all on Mario.

The cupboard was bare when he got here, which was the broader point.

We don't have a foundation of upperclassmen right now. Our bust/washout rate was catastrophically high.

Oh and to add to my previous post of other cups in the cupboard that left:

Kaleb Spencer LB- looks like a promising LB for VT

Corey Flagg LB - often mocked for his speed, but one thing you can’t deny is that he is a smart LB. His instincts helped make up for his lack of speed. Took good angles. He was a guy you could tell loved UM but he was given a pink slip. Now playing LB at a SEC school. Think it would help to have a smart LB who can make sure everyone is in the right place?

Jared Harrison Hunte DL- swapped a solid DT/DE for the Baron of Facemask Penalties

While none of these guys are game changers, they are players who were on the roster but have since transferred to other teams and are playing well.

We really need Justin Scott and Armondo Blount to hit. The staff thinks they hit a home run with the ‘24 DL class. The development of that group is key to the future of the defense.

A whole field goal per game. Murray State, Buffalo, and UMass tend to help a stat like that. But maybe you missed them letting South Carolina’s freshman march downfield at will in under a minute to lose the game.
As opposed to our defense, which would never allow that to happen...

There were cups in the cupboard that transferred out and cups that Cristobal could have bought cheap on the TJ Maxx clearance rack, but he deliberately chose to use those cone shaped paper cups that use for water while waiting for your cafecito at the window of La Carreta.

Chris Graves was on the roster when Cristobal arrived, but transferred to Ole Miss. May not be an all star, but he’s a solid depth piece at CB, backing up standout CB Trey Amos. Oh, and speaking of Amos- he was a transfer from Bama to Ole Miss in the offseason. Was there some mystical barrier that prevented Cristobal from going after Amos? Instead of Ole Miss having Amos with Graves as his backup, UM could have had that same combo. Think that might have helped the defense?

I know- there has to be a way to somehow blame Diaz for this. But fact is Kiffin saw his DB recruiting wasn’t panning out- and then aggressively fixed it with two transfers. Cristobal didn’t.

Ole Miss is 82nd in the country in passing defense, so "aggressively fixed it" is a pretty big stretch.
