Matt Campbell, James Franklin, Bill O'Brien, and Greg Schiano are probably options like they are for all open jobs. If they were smart they should look at Curt Cignetti from Indiana. But they're not.

My first two thoughts of who UF could go after were Franklin and Fran Brown. especially if PSU somehow misses the playoff this year.

Sadly... they're not going to hire Al Golden. They're also not going to hire Lane Kiffin unless the stars align. Coaches don't just get poached from playoff teams and the new playoff model/schedule with the portal is going to make it nearly impossible. Ole Miss would likely have to miss the playoff entirely for it to work.

If Ole Miss gets a 1st round bye or wins in the 1st round - that pushes it to at least January. Make it to the semi's as Ole Miss should and it's nearly mid-January. There's an argument that if its the right hire you wait as long as you have to wait - but by then, you completely missed ESD with an interim HC running the show for that, the portal is closed as it runs Dec 9 - Jan 7. By then, they've likely lost their entire team (not that there's many good players), not signed anyone, you have to hope the post-spring window still exists, have to hope there's something left for February signing day from HS. Probably looking at filling 50+ spots with HS and portal leftovers and trying to cram it all into a week or 2 before the last day to enroll.

What HC is walking into that and what school is going to do that to their program regardless of who you're hiring? By doing that, you've probably set your program back 2 years already and maybe longer because you're going to win 3-4-5 games in year 1 and then have to recruit at a high level after that. They're not going to. The logical thing is to look into the next tier of coaches that can be hired instantly, get there for ESD, be there through the full portal window up to the last day to enroll, and get a decent year 1 product.

They could always do the Manny/Mario situation and hold Napier like he's coming back and explore the option. Or you fire Napier during the year or at the end of the season, like normal, and do a search... then, can you even hire Georgia's DC.. probably doesn't work out. So as a result, you hire a HC from another P5 program that didn't make the playoff or a G5 program.

This new format and the calendar seemingly makes it impossible to hire or poach elite P5 coaches unless they have a down year and miss the playoff.

If they fire Billy, they're going to be looking in the Jedd Fisch, Eli Drinkwitz, Chris Kleiman, Mark Stoops tier. If they don't have traction there it would be in the tier of Jamey Chadwell, Jason Candle, or Jon Sumrall (they're not hiring another G5 head coach from a Louisiana program).

Matt Campbell, James Franklin, Bill O'Brien, and Greg Schiano are probably options like they are for all open jobs. If they were smart they should look at Curt Cignetti from Indiana. But they're not.
That is exactly what I hope happens. I want to see them out of options and scrambling.

Lane is probably going to be in the playoffs. Though.. I wouldn't put anything past him. If he's looking at UGA/Texas in round 1, followed by UGA/Texas in round 2, you never know what he might do.

Last season was Drinkwitz first/only winning season in 4 years. Its a lose lose with him. Missouri could make the playoffs, keeping him out of reach or they could implode, making him an unattractive candidate.

Franklin could be in the playoffs. ESPN gives them a 67% chance of making it even without making the conference championship game AND losses to both OSU and USC.

So then what?

Chadwell would be an interesting fit. But they aren't going the G5 route.

Their fans would riot if they tried to hire Stoops or Schiano. Probably Kleiman too, since he doesn't have their desired track record of recruiting.

Might as well put Matt Campbell on the riot list too. Can he recruit? Would they be able to get past his 55-48 record at Iowa State?

That really only leaves Bill O'brien and Fisch as realistic candidates. Would their fanbase be ok with either one after convincing themselves that they're getting the top guy on their list?

im suprised they dont go after mario hahahahaha
college football is real easy
you dont need an x and o guy
you just need a guy who is relentless at acumulating talent

Doesn’t O’Brien have strong ties to BC? I believe they mentioned on the previous game that his wife and/or some other family members are alumni. Would be great if they pursued him and he told them to EAD that he prefers to stay in the ACC! ACC! ACC!!

I’m very skeptical that Franklin would leave after being OSU’s & Michigan’s *****, just to be Kirby’s.

I’d love to see them fall for the ol Jason candle rope-a-dope. 😂
