The US News rankings is hardly based on academic strength at all. Retention rates, , alumni giving (yes, im not making that up) "Expert opinion" etc etc are all factored in and its very arbitrary.

Yep. Miami alums can't give as much because we are paying back our student loans. Gaytor grads can give more because the entire cost for four years is about $59.

I think the question is really "comparable". I agree that GaTech is a state school, not a private school. But in all other respects, it has not nearly been a "close option" if a student doesn't get into UGa, until maybe recently.

From GaTech's small (undergraduate) size, selective majors (heavy on the engineering side), and high academic standards, it hasn't been much of a "second choice" comparable state school option to UGa. A southern state comp to GaTech would be Auburn or Clemson, but both of those schools are larger and have more of a traditional undergrad-grad ratio. Those schools also offer more diversity of study than GaTech offers (at least at the undergrad level).

What I was referring to is a phenomenon in southern states with huge population growth. Look at the top 10 states (by population). Five are northern states, and when you add massive California and Texas, you have seven states that need to offer a lot of college education opportunities to a lot of people in a lot of locations. Some of these states (Pennsylvania, Ohio) have created massive "flagship" schools by concentrating the best educational opportunities in one location (Penn State, Ohio State). Other large states have a more diverse set of "state" universities, and while one state university may be "the best" (UC-Berkeley, UT-Austin), there are still a lot of other good state schools if you can't get into the flagship.

The three southern states that have recently boomed into the Top 10 population are Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina. The State of Florida had a long history of inequality for state schools (F$U was for women, FAMU was for blacks, even the funding was disproportionate until the 1990s). In short, UiF's "flagship" status was more than just a product of "excellence", it was created through a number of circumstances that became self-fulfilling prophecies.

GaTech is a great state school because of its mission, its standards, and its policies. UiF and UGa have benefited from being fake "flagship" schools in states with rapidly increasing populations. North Carolina allows the UNC name to be used in cities other than Chapel Hill. Florida and Georgia do not. UiF and UGa are just artificial "flagships" that have moved up the rankings due to fake "selectivity" stats.
1/4 of GaTech grads are millionaires...nuff said.

Real equality, which is what women supposedly want, is when you can be called out on your BS and not be coddled. That woman deserves everything the bear has given her and more. Don't tell men not hold a door open for women anymore because you want equality but then ask to be treated any differently from some redneck jort wearing mullett man in the swamp.
Amen

This was my main point. JD08 is correct about Bright Futures, which certainly contributed, but UGa is also moving up in the rankings, and that one has nothing to do with BF scholarships.

Your statistical point is right on. In a state like Michigan, which has a static or declining population, a school like U-M (Michigan) could actually go DOWN on selectivity index, while maintaining an excellent academic program and reputation. Conversely, UiF, F$U, and UGa could RISE in the rankings without doing a single thing to improve their academic programs or reputations, simply by having an ever-increasing selectivity index.

Bizarre. And, look, I can acknowledge that UiF is a good school (F$U is not), but nobody can point to any specific academic initiatives that are driving the rankings movements of those 2 universities in the US News lists.
FSU is ranked 18th. Football feelings aside to say it’s not a good academic school is silly. I have several friends that went to both for undergrad/grad. Most say it depends on the major.
For decades FSU had the highest percentage of law school grads pass the bar in the state. Now, if we’re talking Med schools there’s no comparison. FSU’s is trash compared to UM UF. It’s a new school not even 20 years old while UF has Shands, UM having Jackson and Uhealth.
These are a few examples but we could break down the various undergrad majors, too. Heck, UCF is the best in the state for some majors these days.
Miami is a completely different experience compared to any state school. That’s what makes UM special. These “ rankings” can easily be skewed. However, there’s only one SuntanU baby.

Look, the rankings are for UNDERGRAD, so bringing up law school and med school is ridiculous. Don't even get me started on "bar passage rate", that's a joke, I won't even address the reasons right now.

F$U...undergrad...is just not that good for academics ON MERIT. Is it "competitive", because Florida kids want to go there? Sure.

But every school has some "good majors". If I want to be a trapeze artist, I'm definitely picking F$U. But no professor dreams of getting tenure or an endowed chair at F$U. There is no program where you say "yeah, I definitely want to go to F$U for THAT."

By the numbers, yes, F$U looks a little better than it used to look due to population growth and Bright Futures and all the other things discussed. But it is NOT because of great and well-known undergrad programs, nationally-known faculty, or fantastic academic reputation.

Their criminal justice major for undergrads is very good. Regardless, school to me is what you make of it.

You will NEVER see me defending FSU athletics.... I will make an exception for academics because that happens to be the school I attended for 4 years and graduated from in May. Lastly, this is Gator tears so, **** UF as always! We need to stay focused on what’s important!

Wearing my Canes hat and a gator walks up to me this morning at my daughters swim practice

"Big boy football starts next week"

I said " oh yeah? You guys playing Bama?

He said "no ole miss"

I just laughed at him. He didnt know how to take it and changed the subject

A hard steely stare with no comment usually gets them to slink back to wherever they came from.
