The story from Garcia today on the USC site:
USC quarterback commit
Jake Garcia isn't giving up on his hopes of playing his senior high school season in Georgia.
Garcia, who initially transferred from La Habra High School once the California Interscholastic Federation moved the football season to January, played one game for Valdosta (Ga.) HS last month before being ruled ineligible by the Georgia High School Association. And now he plans to transfer again to Grayson HS in Loganville, Ga., he confirmed.
Garcia is not expected to be formally enrolled at Grayson until at least Wednesday.
"I feel like that gives me the best opportunity to prepare for college and give Coach Harrell and Coach Helton the best version of me," Garcia said in an exclusive interview with TrojanSports.com.
So what's different playing across the state at Grayson HS, another premier high school football program in Georgia?
"You have kids like Carlos Del Rio or Chief Borders, both Florida commits, who have transferred and they were not eligible at the high school they transferred to, but as soon as they transferred again they were eligible," Garcia said. "So I guess that's just the way GHSA works -- it's a little bit different than CIF -- so that's how that came about."
Del Rio, who coincidentally initially transferred from McEachern HS to Grayson HS this year only to be ruled ineligible for the same reason as Garcia, later transferred again to Cartersville (Trevor Lawrence's alma mater),
where he made his debut last Friday.
So it would seem there is an opening for Garcia to find both eligibility and playing time at Grayson, but he wasn't making any public assumptions.
"I just want to be a contributor on the team. I know I have to play my role, which is coming in, not knowing the system, having to learn the system, having to build chemistry with the players and coaches, so I'm just going to play my role and hope for the best. But overall we need to win a state championship."
In addition to trying to salvage his senior high school season, Garcia remains a buzz-worthy recruiting topic for USC fans as Miami continues to make a very public and consistent push to flip his commitment.
Garcia told TrojanSports.com this week, as he has maintained throughout the process, that he is not wavering on his decision.
"[The Miami coaches have] reached out and they keep reaching out, the fans stay on top of it, but nothing has changed and they know that I'm still committed," Garcia said. "I know coach Rhett Lashlee and coach [Manny] Diaz wants to see the best for me, so no matter where I go -- every coach is going to say that to you, 'No matter where you go I'll support you' -- but I genuinely feel like wherever I go they'll support me, and that will be at 'SC and I know they'll be watching me and that they'll be supporting me throughout it all."
Garcia said he has not taken any further visits to Miami this fall -- while prospects can't take official or school-initiated visits, many have taken it upon themselves to go on self-guided tours to check out campuses. Garcia has been to Miami before so that was not a pressing need this fall, and he said he has not done so.
Meanwhile, Trojans fans who worry about Garcia staying in this USC recruiting class were especially curious last week when the Trojans offered yet another 2021 quarterback in fast-rising 3-star Corner Canyon HS (Draper, Utah) prospect
Jaxson Dart, despite already having commitments from both Garcia and fellow 4-star QB Miller Moss.
Garcia said the matter came up in his most recent discussion with Helton this past week, although he said he didn't bring it up.
"My thing is always iron sharpens iron, so no matter who comes in, I think we'll push each other and push each other to be better, which makes the team better. I think that would be a really good quarterback room. So I'm not mad about it and I definitely understand. Whether he comes or not, that's up to him, but if he does we're just going to make each other better," Garcia said.
"[Helton] explained it to me. I didn't ask, but he explained it to me before I even asked anything."
Garcia reiterated, "No, it does not affect my situation."
Garcia was actually back in California this past week to visit his mother and work out with his personal quarterback coach Danny Hernandez.
It was important for Garcia to get some work in with Hernandez as he hasn't been practicing with Valdosta HS since he was ruled ineligible.
