Noles in know on Shavar Manuel's flip from Gators, coach boasts

Defensive tackle Shavar Manuel's flip from Florida to rival Florida State on national signing day Wednesday was a strategic move two weeks in the making that the Seminoles were well aware of, according to an FSU assistant coach.

The 6-foot-4, 280-pound four-star recruit from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, had been told, according to defensive ends coach Brad Lawing -- who coached at Florida in 2013 and 2014 -- to "play the game" and "tell the **** Gators anything they want to hear."

Manuel, the 72nd-ranked player in the ESPN 300 and 10th at his position, had committed to Florida on Jan. 5.

"Shavar had told me the night before, 'I'm a Seminole,' and then he committed to Florida," Lawing said during FSU's annual signing day party, according to the Orlando Sentinel. "I called him up, asked what's going on, and he said, 'I'm just getting some pressure from people.'

"So he didn't just flip tonight. We've known about this for about two weeks."

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher told FM 96.9 The Game in Orlando, Florida, that he wouldn't define Manuel's flip as choreographed but said the Seminoles felt "very good" about their chances of picking up the defensive tackle.

"He always was wanted here," Fisher said. "He loved Florida State back in the spring and a couple of years before that. He felt very comfortable here.

"I don't know why he flipped to Florida, and we called and asked if it's over, and he said, 'No, I want you to keep recruiting me,' so we kept recruiting him normally and he ended up flipping to us."

Amid the hoopla surrounding many letter-of-intent signings, Shavar inked his, on Lawing's advice, at his house in private, away from the influence of anyone beyond his family, according to the Sentinel.

"He was good to his word, and he is pumped up to be at Florida State," Lawing said.

Florida State began signing day at No. 3 in ESPN's class rankings but vaulted LSU to finish No. 1 after also landing ESPN 300 prospects Carlos Becker, Landon ****erson, Dontavious Jackson and Brian Burns.

"Our coaches did an outstanding job of building personal relationships, some of which are two, three or four years old," Fisher said. "It really doesn't matter where we rank. I want to rank the classes after they leave. But I'm aware of where we're ranked at, and it's a testament to how hard our staff worked."

Information from ESPN's Jared Shanker and Jeremy Crabtree was used in this report.

Lol, f_ck the gators, I respect Fsu a lot more than them since they ain't scared to play us

Hate if you want, and I do, but Fisher gets it. He's building a machine, all he needs is a mediocre QB, because that team is loaded with talent. And I hate the semenoles more than any team in the country.

That was really smart. For the kids that are getting so much pressure advise them properly how to come to your school. I am aware there are HS coaches that have intentions of playing Miami this way. We need to find those our quick in the process and then move on.

It's the gator so all is fair. It is interesting to see that noles have no semblance of class left either -- not even the pretense Ole Bobby use to show. Both programs are as slimy as SMU ever was. Mark needs to take the stupid spear and snap it over his knee to let them know the old days are back.

They exaggarated the situation

He's been a Nole lean the entire time by all accounts other than JRock and you. Probably adds legitimacy to the ****ing match you got into with @weownfsu ...... He was exactly right....no way we were turning down a visit from Shavar.....unless...there was ****ery involved.....which there was clearly ****ery involved.

He Byrd'd the Gators and tried to play us too. You know it. JRock knows it. Everyone knows it.

anybody who spent any time on this site over the past two years knew where that cat was going! no surprise here.

FSU has been doing that game for a long time.
If a player is a strong lean to FSU and suddenly wants to commit to your team be suspicious.

R.Buchannon is the only only one I can recall that did it for us...but that was to take the local pressure off him not try to mess with their class.

This...

NCAA has to put In a early signing period. **** is ridiculous

Strongly disagree....Early signing period is good for programs that have to rely on other talent-laden states for recruiting.

So much talent in Florida, and some don't develop into studs until their senior year..... So it is to UM's benefit not to have these kids snapped up by other programs.

Careful what you ask for.

One of the biggest myths among many Cane fans is this unearned respect some of them have for fsu because they "kept us" on their schedule, as if they had some brotherly love for UM.
Truth is they kept us on their schedule and got us into the ACC for recruiting reasons.....wanting us around them so they can poach our backyard is nothing that any self-respecting Cane should admire...they are scumbags, even to a larger degree than the folks in Gaynesville.
