Freshmen and RS Freshmen this Saturday

Redshirts are obsolete. No stud sticks around for his 5th year anymore. The only time a redshirt should be used is for DL/OL who are too weak or raw to contribute at all. Or QBs who cant read a defense.

You can't be serious.

I am. What stud sticks around here for their 5th year anymore? We can't even keep studs here for FOUR years anymore...what makes you think they're gonna wanna stick around for their FIFTH year? If they're not gonna stay here for 5 years, i'd much rather have them contributing EVERY YEAR THEY ARE ACTUALLY HERE (even if its just on special teams) rather than waste one of them on the bench.

QBs/OL/DL are the only position where RS makes sense.

Because you aren't going to have 85 studs on a team. RS is ideal because it gives another year to become more physical, improve football IQ, acclimate a player to the college lifestyle. It builds depth, improves the culture, etc.

Eddie Johnson is a good example of a guy who probably wasn't ready last year mentally but with extra year of seasoning can play meaningful snaps and so far has done well. Some kids just aren't ready and need to adjust to a quicker, more physical game. I guess you are writing off Dortch, Hope, Blue, Jones, Lockhart(?), Carter, and Dillard then.

Bama was able to RS 13 guys last year including 2 WR, 2 DB, LB, TE, RB. Its a luxury that we don't have and to call it obsolete in my mind is crazy.
\

What point are you making here? What luxury are you talking about? We're probably going to redshirt 2-3 WRs, 2 CBs, 1 LB, 1 RB, plus several DL and QB - i'd say we're **** close to 13 redshirts this year.

And yes redshirts are obsolete. Not even our non-studs stick around for 5 years. We've got kids leaving early to be UFA and 6th round draft picks for chrissakes. We've got soft, underperforming heartless "pseudostuds" like Streeter and Miller leaving early to get cut, put on practice squads, or get buried in depth charts.

Look at our 5th year seniors that are on our team even INCLUDING our OL/DL/QB...Ben Jones, Thompkins, VT, Jeremy Lewis, Buchanon...just a bunch of JAGS and career backups.

ETA: Forgot about Wieclaw. I am fine with adding K/P to the list of exceptions. OL/DL/QB/K. For everyone else, RS are a fargin waste.

When you are a team that is a legit national title contender, that's when you get more guys that have redshirted that will stock around for their junior and sometimes senior year. If you're Miller, why would you stay?

Exactly. Redshirting Miller offered us absolutely no benefit. Kid didnt stick around for his rs-JUNIOR year, let alone his rs-SENIOR year.

Mcord is no where near ready to step on a football field

Agree 100%, any way he still 'shirts?

Also agree, and yes he should if possible. How much can they be on the field before having to make that decision?

If he's played one play (I think he has) then he cannot redshirt. The only way he either gains a year of eligibility (or doesn't lose one) is by way of medical hardship.

^^^ 100% correct answer.

rep to you
Every single year at this time without fail we get someone who says if you play one play you cannot redshirt. Yet every single year without fail freshman who have played in the first few games just vanish from the rotation with some phantom injury only to be mysteriously granted that redshirt that they are not supposed to get without ever applying for a medical redshirt. It's a real head scratcher I tell you.

I'm not sure that's true. Anyone know for sure (Where's Ace64 when we need him?) what the deal is?

No head scratcher. They come up with injuries that they can get medical documentation to support. In that case they have to apply for a medical hardship waiver. BTW, that is NOT a redshirt, although the effect is the same. If you play even one play during the season, you cannot redshirt. And, honestly, I don't know why people just go look in the rule book. It's online.

If the question is "Can you redshirt if you play in a game?", the answer is "No".
If the question is "Can you get back that year of eligibilty if you play in a game?", the answer is "Maybe. Providing you play in no more than 30% of your team's scheduled games (4, rounded up), and you incur an injury that prevents further participation, and the games you played in are in the first half of the season". Then you apply to the NCAA for a medical hardship waiver.

Basically, that's how I understand it. But anyone can look up the NCAA rules for the exact wording.

If a guy is ready to help you win, play him. If he's not, redshirt him. Guys will go pro as a redshirt sophomore if they're good enough.

Redshirts are for guys who aren't physically or mentally ready to help you. In very rare situations, the depth at a position may be so absurd that someone sits. But even then, the freshman may have special teams value and could be looking at a heightened role the following year.
