Former 'Canes...Where Are They Now?

Great job, Larrrry. Transfers almost NEVER pan out (transfers going in either direction).

That said, of the guys listed, there aren't that many that are big surprises. I'm not surprised that Travis Williams and Grooms seem to have the most potential. Those guys were guys that popped on the field.

As for Pimp, I'm in the minority, but I was never impressed with the kid. He was an adequate slot guy, but his speed was very average and outside of a 5 yard radius, was only marginally effective.

I'm also surprised at Canon - kid is a better athlete than what I gave him credit for.

Yeah you are correct I believe his eligibility was up there. From all accounts he was a beast down there, but then again it was at the NAIA level, nothing wrong with that but from being a d1 player to lower than d3 i'll say there is a big drop off.
Brandon Marti played for a small NAIA team for Missouri Valley College in Missouri, I got a friend that played with him.

No longer on the team there, too, I assume? Just checked their roster, and he's no where to be found. I do see he was with MoVal in 2011...nothing after that.

Too bad these terrible recruiting years can't count towards our impending scholarships reductions. Self impose this year and we would have been in the clear.

Two guys - wholly dissimilar in personality and background - who I would've loved to see under Golden: Willie Williams and Arthur Brown. To differing degrees, both left UM because of their own actions. But I just can't help but think Golden and Coach D could've managed both and turned them into beasts - Arthur, of course, is exactly that at KSU. I know chances are no one could've kept Willie in line, but he was the most talented defensive player I've seen in high school aside from Patrick Johnson.

LB Kevin Nelson - Transferred to FAMU as walk-on. Was a reserve linebacker in 2011. No longer on the team.

CB Devont'a Davis
- Transferred to Youngstown State. Played in seven games including five starts in 2011. In 2012, fell to 2nd on the depth chart and left the program. However returned during fall camp. Not currently on the roster.

I remember the board went bananas when theses 2 committed. Everyone was bragging on how Shannon stole these guys right from under the Gators (Gainesville High). I guess ol' Urb and Charlie Strong knew what they were doing.

Willie was his own worst enemy in every way. Uncoachable would be putting it lightly when it came to football. Major talent though. Off the field, trouble didn't find him...he found trouble. One of those guys that couldn't stay out of trouble no matter where he went. Whether it was Miami, Louisville, small town in Ohio, small town in Georgia, a small town in Mississippi...didn't matter, dude was headed for trouble.

They let him freelance at Union College and he was still a ******* monster as a player. Had 150 tackles, 20 TFL, 12 sacks, 5 FF... unfortunately, you just had to let him run around and find the football...because he couldn't take to coaching for the life of him.

Kevin Nelson was thought of as a coup of sorts. Plenty of pundits thought he was too small, to be fair...but folks on the boards saw a *** kid from Gainesville who was the #2 MLB prospect in the state (in what turned out to be a very poor year in the state of Florida for linebacker, strangely) that was being recruited by Florida and LSU (no committable offers from those schools). He ended up being a Rutgers/Ole Miss level recruit that would've busted anywhere he went. A recruit like this typically flies under the radar as a bust, but when you have three classes ******* filled with them...he stands out like a sore thumb.

Devont'a Davis...no one liked that commit as far as I recall. Tons of guys thought he was basically a ** FCS level talent and the only reason we took him was he was buddies with Nelson. He didn't have legitimate offers from anybody. First time I saw him on the practice field at Miami, I never saw a worse player on Greentree...he was very bad.

Went and saw Nelson play when he was a senior in high school. In their first playoff game. He was s specimen but had his head up his ***...team took a penalty because he was yukkin it up with someone in the stands instead of getting on the field for kick coverage, etc. I was hopeful, but filed that away at the time.

I don't know why Payne didn't work out. The lack of discipline in this group was amazing, because as far as I can tell it certainly wasn't a lack of talent.
