Fixing The Secondary

Louisville was always going to be a tough matchup and the coaching definitely needs to get better. So I actually came away from the win today feeling alright.

But I am having trouble seeing how Mario finds an immediate fix in the secondary.

- Getting Damari Brown back will definitely help.
- Development from OJ Frederique would be massive.
- Hopefully Zaquan Patterson can step up and grab one of the starting safety spots. But it is at least mildly concerning that he cannot seem to beat out Harris for the gig today.
- Robby Washington? Seems a little small. Ryan Mack? Also very small.
- The secondary class is solid, but even if Pickett flips, it is hard to see any of those guys being immediate contributors (Nobody wants to be wrong more than me).

The most concerning piece of this is that really really good cornerbacks don't enter the portal very often. Sure, Caleb Downs is elite. I am not sure I count Travis Hunter since he was always following Deion, I guess Jabbar Muhammad and AJ Harris are probably true impact guys, but after that the pickings are slim.

I know this will be the focus in the offseason and I am sure we will be in on anyone elite that enters the portal, I am just not sure this is an overnight fix. Can I contribute to Derrek Cooper and Justice Fitzpatrick's NIL package already?

You can fix anything broken with pieces.

I don't think so. Our secondary is ****. We are lucky to have Ward but next year all bets are off. I don't think Oregon is missing Mario at all and I understand why.
We have our Jordan Travis , he’s just better. That guy deserves three million in NIL with all the flaws he’s covering up. Not even Madonnas plastic surgeon is as impressive as Mr Ward.

Getting Damari back would be a start but nothing is really going to drastically change the secondary this year.

This is the answer and brown is nowhere near returning.

It is what it is, failures of past coaches and lack of talent acquisition in the portal has Miami in this mess.

There is no quick fix.

Only hope is Miamis defense can find a way to just get enough stops and lucky turnovers to let the offense win the game.

Offense knows it can’t turn the ball over and needs to score every possession. It’s an incredibly tall task but so far they have been up to it.

As for the future. Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit I don’t even know.

I don’t see any immediate impact kids in this class out of high school. Even Pickett won’t be immediate impact.

Miami hopefully has been back channeling for. dB’s to hit the portal cause they need an infusion of talent.

I think Patterson will eventually get more and more snaps and take over one safety spot next year but outside that the room is bleak.

As for corner you have OJ and Brown and we aren’t sure what either of them will truly be just yet. After that it’s real bleak. Mario is going to have to work his a$$ off to fix that room.

But I’m not worried about the future right now. I’m enjoying this season!

Patterson played a lot of snaps yesterday. I don’t know the snap count, but he played a good bit in the second half. And he played well from my in person perspective. He wasn’t just going to come in and take all
Of Harris snaps this game. But next game, I bet it’s 50/50 and maybe Patterson gets more snaps.

Going into the season, I don’t think there’s a single reasonable person who didn’t see our secondary being the glaring weakness of this team. The problem is, I don’t think any of us saw it being THIS bad. For someone who eats, sleeps, and breathes recruiting like Mario it’s crazy that he let the talent level, or lack thereof, get to this point in the secondary. Many of us thought we would hit the portal hard for that position in the off-season and it just never happened. For this year, there’s not much we can do other than give these younger guys some playing time.

Mario is his own enemy because anyone can see that Patterson should be playing. The kid should be playing against FSU period. Mario is so full of baloney when he says we are going to play our best players. Tired of that rhetoric because it's simply not true. Either that or player development under our coaching staff is **** poor. This team is going nowhere without a much improved secondary. It's really puzzling that UM comes up with a gem in Cam Ward and for 3 years we have floundered big time in the secondary. This is all on MARIO and we cannot beat the elite teams. Rest assured we will not be scoring 52 on the Georgia defense lol. This a HUGE PROBLEM and for three years MARIO the Baker has done nothing to improve the secondary but it's the worst in the country! Thank goodness we have an explosive offense but wait until we play a very tough defense.

Stop playing the same guys who continuously make the same mistakes. Patterson should be starting over Harris. OJ should be starting over Hill and Richard. Why he suddenly went down the depth chart is beyond me. All Guidry talks about is experience especially from the safety group but if the experience is dog****, what the **** does it matter. Alderman and Popo should be taking snaps from Kiko as well. Guidry is a huge part of the problem too. Dude just isn’t a good DC.

It’ll have to be similar to DL this year, load up on young talent and hit the portal hard. Hopefully 1-2 high level guys.

Speaking of the DL, they can help the secondary by truly being elite and not just good.

Stop this. Lies were told repeatedly.

Well that are going 4 verse 5 or 6 each play since Miami can’t blitz cause the LB and secondary are so weak.

I think they are playing well for never having the numbers advantage. Also they get held every play.

No doubt they are playing well. For this year, they are the only unit on D that can give us a chance. They did force a fumble for a TD which kinda got lost in the craziness of the game yesterday.

We are poorly coached. For sure.

With that said, guidry knows what he has on the backend. Go back and watch yesterday when we played quarters, cover 2 or cover 3.

At this point, you blitz all night (maguinoa included) to over compensate. Or play a simply cover 3/ drop and hope to god they make a mistake.
