Fisch

To those who say that today's offensive play-calling won't fly against "real" defenses: I agree. But it's not fair to judge playcalling against a defense that it isn't actually facing. As Lu admitted, Fisch is smart enough to game-plan and adjust based on what the defense gives him. I wanted more downfield passing and power running, but the 2012 Dolphins-esque play-calling worked today.

I'll be plenty sullen after the losses we'll see. Today, I'm prepared to be happy.

Excellent post. I agree.

Completely fair. You also touched upon something I mentioned earlier. Fisch spent some time this offseason with the Phins....

...just sayin'.

C- effort. Many will look at this game and see the points. I look at this game and think of what this style will look like against a legitimate defense.

Same here. Our young athletes are impressive but all I could think about all game was how Saban and Alabama would salivate to rotate forward and obliterate our pantyhose parallel plays. It would be a train wreck every time those plays were called. We'd be wobbling off the field. And once your finesse core is taken away the entire team is stunned. You realize you're nothing but a glorified card trick. The frailty seeps to every aspect of the team.

Short passes are not foundational. They are a cheap bail out against weak defenses. I posted that several weeks ago in a Fisch thread and I'll stick with it. He had several opportunities today to line up in power formation and punish Boston College when they were reeling. Plays that would set up play action downfield strikes later in the game. Instead he defaulted to sideways finesse. That's his style and it won't take us anywhere, not against top foes. Their biggest problem will be restraining laughter.

Granted, Fisch is somewhat hampered by Morris' line drive tendencies. It really limits our windows. College quarterbacks with great touch like Matt Leinart and Kellen Moore are nearly unstoppable in the right offense because they can drop it off the roof top if necessary. Massive permutations toward success. Jacory tried that approach but his arm was 20% too weak and his football intelligence 50% lacking. I had hoped Morris would improve his touch slightly from 2010 but today he was purely winging it. That means it's like a foosball table for the opponent. He's not going over your head so you merely need to read the eyes and cover the angles. Smart teams like Virginia Tech will feast on that, as they did in the 4th quarter in 2010. No doubt Kuechly would have smelled out Morris several times today.

Late in the 2nd half and UM recovers a fumble on the 7 going in. Morris took three snaps from shotgun (one throw to the flat that almost went for 6 the other way, prob saved by Morris's arm strength) and none under center. Would have been nice to see a little I-formation run/play action. Could have really stepped on their throats there and put it away.

That series was my only real issue with Fisch's play calling yesterday. Otherwise I love what he did.

Someone posted last night (wish I could give credit to the OP but can't find it this morning) that this game plan is a complete outlier from the previous 12 games called by Fisch at UM, as well as completely in-congruent with the style that Golden has been accustomed to running throughout his entire coaching career. The only conclusions that I can surmise from this is:

1. Game plan was installed through out camp specifically for BC
2. Game plan was devised and installed for BC but also to give KSU more to prepare for.
3. Fisch and Golden have abandoned the Pro-style principals in favor of an uptempo spread attack.
