Final Canes Camp Report

IMO Heaps experience is actually a negative for me. I mean yeah hes been in a game before, but none of them ended wrll, clearly, or else he wouldnt be on his 3rd team. Having experience is a positive when someone had to play as a freshman and is looking to make the next step. Not when he is a senior whos been on 2 other teams and lost his job at each place because of the way he played (bad). I really dont think Heaps experience is good. RW has good experience, he was forced to start as a freshman, then tranfered to his dream school. Then he got solid game reps as a backup to Morris when he was hurt/we were dominating. That is good experience.
Saying someone whos done it but failed many times has an advantage because at least theyve done it before is a bad argument. Kaaya won this competition and should start the first 2-3 games until RW is back and finishes us off with 10 wins.

Some decent points, but the bottom line is, we have a coaching staff that is under fire to produce now. And under those circumstances, they are going to go with who they believe gives them the best chance to do so.

If Golden wasn't under pressure from the administration or the fan base, I believe Kaaya would be the starter, because it's a move with long-term implications. He's a big time talent, but will almost certainly make mistakes early as he acclimates himself to college ball. As it is, we might still see BK at some point, but only if the Heaps experiment is such a colossal failure that there's no other choice.

Hold onto yer butts, fellas.

I have a hard time believing or thinking Kaaya should RS. He could well be named the starter. If he's that good already he needs to get some meaningful time this year bc next year he will be the guy.

In just wonder what a RS would do to his psyche. Going from a battle to start to Redshirting would be kind of disappointing IMO.

He'd be one bad game away or one injury from starting for the first month of the season. If an eventual RS would mess with his psyche what's he going to do next year when he has to compete again? Give up? I think your concerns are unfounded. QBs - including good ones - RS all the time.

Wait... Who established that he won the competition?

This and that bolded scenario would be a tremendous waste of a year of Kaaya's eligibility.

Concerned about those consistently batted balls from Heaps. His best throws reflected in the highlights we've seen seem to come when he's out of the pocket.

Ideal situation..., he doesn't play great vs Louisville, but we find a way to win. Bring in Kaaya vs FAMU to get his gameday confidence going, and ride out with him the rest of the season. Although I'd love for Heaps to end up being Drew Brees for us this year, I don't see it. And I also don't see a 5th year senior improving throughout the year at the same rate of a true freshman. We obviously have way more long term upside with Kaaya, but I also believe he provides more upside for this team now.

Heaps starts, Williams will get an opportunity to beat him out when he is 100%, Kaaya redshirts unless Louisville is a disaster for Heaps.

As it should be IMO.

Assuming Heaps and Williams are better than Kaaya right now, then what you described is the perfect scenario for us. With that said, play whoever gives us the best chance to win.

I haven't looked at the film closely, but if Heaps is making great reads at the line and making checks that produce big plays in the running game I think you have to take that into consideration. Coley makes a valid point, we can't base the competition solely on who looks the best throwing the ball when we get good match ups out of the huddle. The guy that puts us in the best position to succeed on every down should get the nod.

To be clear I don't know who that is, but if Kaaya isn't light years ahead of Heaps as a passer and is being outperformed in the other aspects then Heaps should start.

Lots of highly touted freshman qb's play before they are ready, lose their confidence, and never get it back. Happens every year. (And in the NFL too.) That's the only reason I'm leaning Heaps if it's close. If Kaaya is clearly better right now, then play Kaaya.

Freaking love fest for a failed QB (Heaps)in that video.

wouldn't you want to reserve this criticism for if and when heaps plays crappy here? isn't there a chance he can manage this offense and be successful using all our weapons and his experience? i think there might come a time we will say what the **** were the coaches watching in practice to go with this guy but for now we can only go by their evaluations which seem to be pretty favorable.

I don't think anyone would debate that.

Love to see what these kool aid sippers say about some of these Kaaya throws....

**crosses arms and taps foot impatiently**

Love to see if you know any coaches that base evals off of 3 plays in practice.

In the world of the stopped clock being correct twice a day you may be proven right. In the world of those who have actually coached football it is not unusual for a player to improve over time, nor is it unusual for the "obvious talent" to look great in practice and not show up in the game. Anyone following Canes football for even a few years has been witness to that. So why the hate fest?

Heaps may yet fail, Kaaya may yet fail, as both a football fan and a Hurricane fan one would wish them both well.

Let Heaps go in there an get his sht pushed in as the O-line is going to be below average. Save the kid tons of punishment and get him a RS. Williams can replace Heaps after he gets his head ripped off by the gaping holes our O-Line is going to leave open on passing downs.
