From @JohnProwell: is al golden really turning Miami around? Does not feel like we are close to contending

After three seasons, you'd think we'd have a better handle on that, but I honestly don't have a feel for that. As for your second comment, I'd agree it doesn't feel like UM is close to contending under Golden. Certainly not with the way Miami looked in that bowl game or losing four of its last six games of 2013 with the closest margin of those defeats being by 18 points (against Duke and Va. Tech).

I do believe Golden has made it a much more stable program and shepherded it through brutal circumstances with that NCAA/Nevin Shapiro mess. And he deserves a ton of credit for that, but the product on the field simply hasn't been strong enough. I suspect he'd tell you that too. In his three seasons, UM is 22-15 and just 13-11 in ACC play. Worse still, Miami has been hammered by almost every ranked team it has faced the past two seasons. Take out the early season win over a soon to be free-falling Florida team and Golden's teams lost to ranked opponents since 2012 by a combined margin of about 40-10.

It's not like UM doesn't have some firepower either and the Canes had a big experienced O-line, but they just flopped. They got mauled by Louisville in their bowl game. The D has been horrible and doesn't have any real difference-makers in the front seven.

I've heard good things about some of the players Golden is expected to sign this winter, but it seems like he's going to need a few of those young DLs to step up in a hurry. Also, it seems a stretch to think one of his QBs is ready to lead UM to more than eight wins in 2014. Another 8-4 season would be tough for Miami fans to stomach, especially with FSU on top of the college football world.

What a novel idea, using the actually stats to make a statement. Our fans could learn a thing or two. The numbers don't lie.

3 years is enough to gauge the direction we're headed. If you can't see that, you should probably let me borrow some money. I'll pay you back.

He didn't say anything we haven't been saying for 2 months now. Can't wait for the excuse brigade to gallantly stride through and excuse it all away.

Three years in, and I honestly don't see much of a difference between Golden and Shannon, except one can speak in a complete sentence, and the other could actually field a competent defense.

Pretty sure he'll tell you we are trending upwards.

All truth there. Only thing he got wrong was the only difference maker we have in the front 7 is Denzel, but he can't do it by himself. Especially when he's back in coverage 15 yards off the LOS.

He is a good face and stabilized the program but not the coach to bring us to the elite level. Sorry but 8-4 at temple is not elite by miami old standards. He didnt win championship there, also temple was a mac program then.

Our defensive coordinator has cost us games and recruits for 3 years now.

If he stays, then 3 mediocre years suddenly becomes 6.

I hate how Golden has handled the last month or two but I still have a slight hope that he can be the guy, but he needs help. We have a ton of talent growing up and coming in. Legit talent.

Now we need someone that can maximize it.

Exactly. He'll just spin it and the fools on here will slurp it right up.

9 wins at temple is like 12 wins here.. it's too soon to say golden is not the dude for the job, considering the amount of years of futility before he got here, 3 years is not enough time to get it done.

Sadly, you and I both know that the young DL talent isn't going to impact anything for another few years, especially in this system. And Kayaa (if he is named the starter in some parallel universe, since we know Golden is going with his senior QB) isn't going to overcome the deficiencies on the rest of the roster like most of this board thinks/hopes.

Negged for the stupidity.

6,7,9.....
with recruiting classes getting successively better each year.
Yeah, we seem to be headed in the wrong direction.

Yeah, we seem to be headed in the wrong direction.

And we are on the cusp of a Top 30 defense.

I have some thoughts both ways. I call the 2011 class and season year 0 instead of year one because between the suspensions, the cloud, and the abortion of a recruiting situation he inherited, I don't think a whole lot of guys would have had much success. 2012 we looked better and brought some game breaking talent into the program, although there was a ton of misses as well. The 2013 class has showed some promise and we were also able to redshirt some guys. I thought we improved, although the 9-4 record wasn't really indicative of how we truly played. Losing duke hurt a ton.

Long story short, there's a little of both. I think it's easy to understate how much of a mess this program was and I truly feel closer and like we have a foundation heading in the right direction. But, we have been straight up out coached regularly and I think the product on the field has underachieved by. Pretty good amount. This season has a make or break feel to it for me. I'd be happy with 9-3 and competitive losses because it's a tough schedule. The really troublesome thing to me though is the blowouts. We haven't belonged on the same field as the good teams we faced these past 2 years. The defense is a mess and the necessary changes have not been metro there is cause for concern but there is also growth being shown, it's just much slower thn we'd all like. As much as it sucks and we keep saying it, I think once the crwppy 2011 class leaves and we bring in one more class after this we will be a good deal closer to what the talent level should actually be at um.

this is what i don't understand.. we're seeing actual improvement, our classes have been good... and we lost duke and dorsett for how many games? duke is our best player... i'm not sure why we're shocked that the team didn't perform as well without it's best player.
