Fall Practice Summary - Day 1

View as article
It sounds a lot like the spring game. Tate and N'Kosi as the best QBs and KJ Osborn standing out.
Was the play calling more dynamic?
Did Jeff Thomas significantly improve the Offense since the spring game?
[/QUOTE

Not at all as far as Qb went. All three had very good moments and some poor moments from everything I read. The consistent thing said was that Tate greatly improved compared to first two spring games. Not a word about Perry standing out over anyone.

Lol ok.
Patchan will start. Bethel is a reliable 5th year sr. Who has been contributing for 2 years. He’s solid and dependable. Tate will be the starter b/c he will mask some deficiencies on the oline.

You don’t think bethel and patchan start?

You do know that they still have David Feeley around them in the summer right? You dont think he reports back to Manny every day? Are you new to this football thing?

Martell IS Manny's guy....he brought him in when the other 2 constantly chirped about leaving the team. They wanted to quit instead of compete just cause Tate showed up. That is a lack of leadership. But like I said, summer workouts are Feeley run.

The other 2 constantly chirped about leaving?? Sources please.

Cuz you're making that **** up, imho!

Based on the Diaz interview, I'm getting the feeling he's just handing the job to Martell talking about his Summer workouts. How can he justify Martell as #1 at the first Fall practice based on some summer workouts that are not even official? It's as though the Spring practices didn't matter. Summer workouts prepare you to earn the job in the Fall. You can't earn it in the Summer workouts. I'd expect all 3 to have equal time with the 1's. If not, then this isn't really a competition.

I'll really be interested in the pecking order at QB over the next few days.

Competition does not begin and end on the field. Tate is not just being handed the job. If Manny has him #1 right now is because Tate has stood out overall in film room, locker room, weight room, and practice field. Competition is still ongoing but time is running out. Decision will be made soon.

Tell me you’re not this fūcking dumb....

You’re just kidding, right?

again if the job is just handed to at this point (bc none of them are ready for 8/24 tbh) then this season will be no better than last year when the job was actually handed over to rosier. this should be a true 3 week competition so all 3 continue to push each other till theyre all ready for the gator. right now, none of them are based on the ups and downs all 3 have had so far.

you must have missed the part were tate was most fluid running the team in and out of the huddle and having confidence. Coaches want an extension of themself on the field, not who can throw the furthest or fastest or tightest spiral. if they wanted that, half the QB's in the nfl would never have been starters.

and "built to win all 12 weeks"

this is the key for me. based on what we've heard, theyre not close to being ready for an SEC defense n their athletes. idc who the QB is if the OL is garbage
They are playing against an “sec front”. Just think about it, the second team dline consisted of these guys. That’s lethal and better than most power 5 starters. **** it might be better than our starters on the dline. If we are talking talent this group possibly has 4 of our 6 most talented dline players in it.

Easy breakdown from these first practice threads

@Number1CanesFan is related to Perry

@DRevLee doesn’t have to be a girl for a day, he would suck Tate Martell as is

Co-sign that Herbert is a train wreck waiting to happen no way he starts

Tate Martell might have moxy, leadership but he’s 5’9 and can’t throw. Him trying to throw over Patchan was cringeworthy

Perry and Williams are the most talented but both appear to be flawed

I do agree one of them are portal bound

Enos does not give a **** about who came here for what... he’s gonna start the best QB... He did not recruit Tate Martell

But if Tate starts we are in trouble and the writing is on the wall for Perry.

Can't believe I actually agree with most of this. Tate's height is def goin to be an issue with batted balls if we aren't lining up in shotgun 90% of the time.

The first day of Canes’ fall camp kicked off today in preparation for the opener against the Florida Gators. It was Miami’s first open practice that I can remember, and along with the fast pace of the drills, the crowd made things electric. It was an excellent kickoff for the Manny Diaz era. Let’s get into the takes.

**Of course, we need to start with QB play. Each of the three had their moments, but I’d have to say Tate Martell won the day by a tad. To my eye, he was much more comfortable out there running the offense from where he was this spring, not a lot of hesitation. He’s letting it rip with confidence and not thinking too much out there, while his accuracy is much improved. He was at his best when the team went to full 11-on-11 play, and bought time with his legs to extend plays, but threw a pretty bad pick towards the end where he stared down his receiver. Jarren Williams was second up, but split time on the 2nd team with N’Kosi Perry. Perry in particular had multiple great sideline throws, dropping some dimes in there with good coverage. I still think Williams throws the prettiest ball overall, but he didn’t how have many ‘wow’ moments as Martell or Perry today. Just one man’s opinion of how day 1 went, but obvious the competition is still ongoing and I have no doubt that each of the three will keep pushing each other until something is decided.

**I also got my first look at Peyton Matocha, and although he mostly worked with scout team, he threw a nice ball and didn’t try to do too much, took what the defense gave him. He had a nice scramble in 11-on-11’s where he picked up a good chunk of yards. A definite redshirt at this point though.

**KJ Osborn was the standout of the receivers, with Mark Pope a close second. Interestingly enough, Osborn worked a lot out of the slot and was having his way with the strikers. He worked the middle of the field well and had a very strong rapport with Martell. Although he had one pretty bad drop, Pope had more than a few nice catches and was having no problems getting open. Marshall Few is a great route runner and was giving guys on the third team fits. Jeff Thomas on crossing routes seemed like a staple of the offense. The receivers and tight ends were running a lot of motion, and Mike Harley got a jet sweep.

**Lorenzo Lingard was working with the scout team all practice. He was sporting a bulky brace on his knee and doesn’t look 100% quite yet. He’s going to have to get eased into action.

**Don’t know how ready he’d be if he got thrown into the fire, but Adam ElGammal certainly looks the part of an offensive lineman. Easily 300+ and was moving well with it, good bend too. Watched him take a few reps against Cameron Williams, seemed like they were evenly matched.

**Larry Hodges stood out to me as well. I like his build and he didn't look out of place as a true freshman, he's clearly a very cerebral player that understands the nuances of the position and getting open. I think he could see playing time this year.

**Christian Williams did get beat, but I liked what I saw from him from an athletic standpoint and think he has a great future. Ditto for Te’cory Couch, who’s length was giving receivers trouble. Couch had a pick off a deflection in 7-on-7 play. Derrick Smith read Tate Martell well and jumped a curl route in the middle of the field for a pick when Tate took too long to make a decision.

**Trevon Hill is going to be very good, but I wouldn't pencil him into the opening day lineup just yet. Hill's athletic ability is undeniable and he's going to be a big part of UM's defense this year, but he seemed pretty gassed the second half of practice. It's going to take some time for him to get into football shape, while I thought Scott Patchan was a standout today and won't give up his job without a fight. He easily won the majority of his reps against Kai-Leon Herbert, and also got into the backfield on one play, tipped the pass, and intercepted it.

**It's going to take a little while for Sam Brooks to get the hang of linebacker, but his speed is undeniable. He notably blew up a screen and had the defense going wild. UM is going to need him to step up big time with the injury issues at LB.

**In a humorous moment, new UM punter Louis Hedley boomed his first punt and sends the crowd into loud cheers. He got a hold of a few, but I thought he was a mixed bag overall. A solid start, but he'll need to find more consistency.

Nah dude. I'm just not drinking the cool aide that Martell earned #1 based on Summer workouts. How do you quantify that?

Secondly, every player on the team was slotted at their position based on what they did this Summer right? And coincidentally, the hardest workers turned out to be all the guys we expected to be starting. Just amazing that happened that way.

I'm not drinking the cool aide bruh.

Manny and Enos both said publicly that whoever put in the most work over the summer and displayed true leadership qualities would have a leg up on others come fall camp...
