Ezekiel Marcelin commits to Miami

Personally I wouldn't compare anyone to that guy... just saying.

However, not every recruit can be a 5-star, not every recruit can run a 4.3. These are the takes that every team has. Hard working, unselfish player with motor that plays fundamentally sound football.

And personally, I kept thinking about Corey Flagg when I saw the tape... and we all know who won us the game against Clemson.

I'm not "comparing anyone".

I'm citing an EXAMPLE of when "height/weight" was not nearly the end-all/be-all of recruiting evaluations.

If we had CIS in 1993, some of these moron porsters would have **** on Ray Lewis as a "reach", both athletically and academically. That's a fact.

If he’s a tad better Flagg as the 3rd LB in this class this is a take all day. The problem with Flagg was, he was LB1 in 2020. lol I don’t think I’ve ever seen a kid get more hate than Flagg when all he did was work his *** off every day.

Exactly. Flagg was very good last year, and at times excellent, because he wasn't asked to cover 2/3 of the field. He was not that type of LB and he never should have been put into that role. Guidry has proven to be a lot less reliant on a particular scheme, and a lot more in tune with the pieces on the field. It's an approach that makes me a lot less concerned about recruiting kids like this.

Here's a question, would anyone be OK if Miami signs a linebacker that won the state wrestling championship in the 189 pound weight class in his senior year of high school?

I just want to know if a guy like that would be a "reach" or someone that we should not recruit because of his body type?

Nah, Lewis was a naturally bigger guy, let's keep it honest.

He competed at 189 as a senior, but also competed in the 189 pound weight class during his sophomore and junior years in high school. He stayed in that weight class for wrestling his senior year by purposely cutting weight. The thing about wrestling is you can cut weight in order to make your weight class. He was probably walking around at 210+ as a senior when he wasn't trying to make weight for wrestling. He got to 189 after cutting and dehydrating for weigh-in.

When he played in the NFL, he was 6'1, 240 lbs. That tells you he was a bigger guy who had to diet and dehydrate to make his target weight class for wrestling, which is different from a naturally smaller guy who is going to have to learn how to eat.

That's no comment on Marcelin, but Lewis wasn't some undersized dude, he was a big dude who purposely cut weight for his sport.

Lets Go Start GIF

How does his game compared to Waynmon Steed? I loved Steed’s game coming out of HS. Kid was a natural LB, but injuries and playing under Diaz really crimped his development. Anywho, how does Melendez comp? Thanks in advance…

Go Canes!

Yeah, but go back and re-read what I wrote.

I'm not saying Ray Lewis was "undersized" (though I don't think he's ever been listed as taller than 6'1" and Marcelin is listed by one site as 6'0").

The commentary is about people who take a height/weight stat and, WITH NOTHING ELSE, start forming judgments and scouting reports.

I have no idea as to what will happen with Marcelin's height and weight in the next few years. But let's not act like anyone else knew what Ray Lewis would become BASED SOLELY ON HIS HEIGHT AND WEIGHT.

I was enrolled at UM at the time. I tutored for the Athletic Department at the time. Ray Lewis was a workout fanatic. He was not the same size when he graduated that he was when he enrolled.

Facts.

Welcome to The U!

A couple of questions.

1) If this kid is a consistent on field producer, a consistently rated 3.5-4 star player from a consistent national powerhouse, how is he stretch? He had a lot of games underneath his belt and has performed well.
I don’t think the coaches at Central are just giving away starting positions and this kid has started multiple years. He can only get better but looks pretty good. Definitely likes contact. Why do some think he’s a stretch commit?

2) If he is a stretch, then who are better 2025 LBs in the Tri-County? We know about IMG and Kissimmee but who in your opinions are better SFL LBs?

Thank you for your replies?

Just to answer this question, some would say Ty Jackson, at least from a measurables standpoint.

I'm a fan of the Marcelin take though…A must have in this class, no? But a take all day.

Not disagreeing with any of that and also want to be clear I'm not directing anything negative at Marcelin... I've never seen him in person and have no idea about him. I'll wait until he's on Greentree to make any evaluations on him. I was just speaking about Ray Lewis and more generally about kids who are involved in wrestling and how they cut for weight classes, and how that changes the way you might evaluate their weight.

He was 189 lbs for weigh-ins in wrestling but that 189 requires a big grain of salt - he worked hard to cut to that weight to make the weight class. If you're 189 holding zero water and almost no body fat with a huge frame, you can pack on pounds very quickly and it happens all the time in those sports. And he did. He was always a gifted athlete... I mean hindsight and all but you don't get to be 6'1 240 with multiple pro bowls just on grit and Muscle Milks alone, you have to be athletically blessed with the linebacker gene. He was. Lewis had both - the natural gifts plus the insane work ethic to get the most out of his gifts. That's the rare combo that makes a Pro Bowler / all time GOAT.

But yeah for the record, I agree with you people shouldn't be trashing Marcelin based on his listed height/weight on 247 or On3 or whatever. They should do what I do and wait until you actually see the kid in pads on Greentree before forming judgements. So your overall point is spot on.

corey flagg was more solid than Wes Bissainthe last szn.
