What kind of game are we expecting Lucas to run? Curious if he likes small, quick up tempo ball, or more of a set play methodical maybe utilize bigs in a post game? Guess we can only guess correct?

IMO we need to go heavy’s on 1’s and 3’s, when we made it to the final four we had so many wing guards and our speed and shot making ability (NEED to find guys that are similar to how Wong/Miller conducted themselves) we do this and grab 1 big defensive big msn similar to a Kaleel Ware for the heat would be huge

Agree for the most part. Definitely have to have the formidable big. Ideally very athletic and Udeh fits that perfectly. That was the biggest downfall against UConn in the final 4 - no answer for Sanogo

The rest of the formula, IMO, is a perimeter shooter at either the 3 or the 4, and both starting guards have to be able to score (Lowe also fits that bill but you need another one). Your 4 has to be able to defend the post or you need a 2nd serviceable big man or you’ll get destroyed when the primary goes out or gets in foul trouble. The 5th starter, either the 3 or 4 has to be a + defender and comfortable as a role player on offense and accept that role without trying to do too much (Jordan Miller played that role perfectly in 2021 before becoming a primary guy in 2022 and Wooga played that role perfectly in 2022 but wasn’t able to transition to a primary guy in 2023).

The 2021 team had it all except the key big man. Waardenburg did as much as he could but ideally he was the 4 that could defend the post when needed. The 2022 team had it all except the 2nd post player or the 4 - put Waardenburg on that team and we win it all IMO. At the very least the UConn game was a dog fight. Could say the same about putting Norchad on the 2021 team.

The 2013 team had it all. That was the team that should have won it. Elite guard play, 2 solid big men, Kadji could do it all offensively and still defend bigs, and you had 2 great scoring guards in Larkin/Scott. McKinney-Jones and Brown could both serve as the role player.

Could also add that you need at least 9 serviceable players to be fresh enough to compete in the elite 8 and beyond. Something else neither 21/22 or 22/23 team had and ran into Kansas/UConn that went 10-12 deep. The 2013 team even went 9-10 deep. It had no weaknesses.

He's an athletic big that can play above the rim and is very good in the pick and roll because he is broad shouldered and very fluid catching lobs. Makes plays in the fast break too.

No jump shot and a limited FT shooter.

He would have thrived with our 2022 and 2023 teams and how they played. I have no clue what kind of offensive identity Lucas wants but based on who we're recruiting it seems like it'll be similar styles/preferences.

It would make a very strong and physical front court. Reneau addition makes it that much more important to sign Zrno and probably at least 1 more sharp shooter to give them space. If they have plans for Bethea to return we really need him to take a big leap.

Assume Lowe is all but done as well. I don't think he's as bad of a shooter as his % but he's going to have to get closer to 35% from 3 as well. A lot of that could just be being around better pieces and better shot selection not having to the THE guy.

Unless Bethea is willing to come off the bench - which I doubt - I'm not sure if he fits in a lineup with Lowe given their usage. You'd have two fairly ball dominant guards.

No he won't be willing to come off the bench and we shouldn't pay him what he's going to want if he's going to play that role.

I'm fine with having multiple starting guards that are capable/want to be the primary ball handler. It'll be Lowe that does it primarily and Bethea could do what most think he should do and focus on playing more catch and shoot and getting open in transition versus moving the ball down court and being the one with the ball and distributing the ball and creating his own shot off the dribble. He could do what Wong did for us but I didn't see that level of handling ability and definitely doesn't have the wiggle/elusiveness that Wong had.

Probably not what he wants to do and probably ultimately why I don't think he returns (along with $ because you're right, it's no longer the best fit for us and we probably shouldn't spend it)
 
Looked at some data and Udeh doesn't do a lot of work offensively in the post (at least at TCU). He's more of a scorer off the pick and roll, very highly rated there, also very good in transition. Then an excellent offensive rebounder.

Reneau also does a lot of his scoring in the pick and roll but is very good in the post. Doesn't do much in transition. He'll likely get more opportunities to play the post on a smaller guy with Udeh on the floor with him or it will open up Udeh to abuse teams as a roll/pop man on the smaller guy with his athletic ability and physicality.

So they could complement each other more than anticipated if used the right way and get the right pieces around them. I think Jaland Lowe is very good distributing and I would assume good on the pick and roll - I like his assist numbers. Looks like an interesting combination coming together.

My biggest issue with Kidd was his strength. I noticed it in the first few games, he didn't have a presence on the boards at all because of how weak he was.

This guy is a bull strength wise. Rim protector too. Think he fits what jai wants defensively.

Will just have to find him a role offensively, but shouldn't be too hard. A lob threat/PnR guy is a solid role to have on offense.
