Pete is saying he would be eligible to play this season

I'd be interested in the specifics of this.

I think there is a difference depending on whether the player asks to transfer or the school cuts him. Since scholarships are renewable annually it doesn't seem logical that a school can cut someone from a scholarship and still hinder his athletic/academic pursuits. Then again, this is the NCAA so logic is usually a scarce commodity.

Pretty sure once you sign that LOI you have to sit out a year before playing at another D1 school unless there is some crazy hardship where the ncaa will give you a waiver. I'm not sure that getting kicked out changes that.

If I recall correctly, I believe the kid has to actually matriculate at the University. I believe the language is (or was) related to the first day of classes. Maybe if this kid hasnt attended any classes yet, there is a chance he wont have to seek a release from the Nebraska coach/AD. I think he still has to sit out a semester instead of a full year, so I do not think he'll be eligible for this season but I do think he can transfer and start on scholarship in the spring without having to get the blessing of the NU coach. I could be wrong but that's my understanding from back in the day.

If Nebraska is kicking him off the team, of course he'd be eligible to play right away. I can't see how it could be any other way.

Im gonna hang my hat on the first day of class rule. We need a bat signal for Ace64.

That's an SEC name. Depending on his haircut I may be really excited about this pickup.

I believe Suttles would have to sit until 2014. Pete has been working this story for the past week, if/when it's official he will give you guys the scoop.

Its the NCAA, brother!!! You need to remove all common sense from the equation and dig into their bylaws.

Didn't Seantrel Henderson sign with USC and then get released and was able to play at Miami that year? Now, I don't know if getting kicked off them team is that same as being released from your LOI, especially since he had already enrolled, but I do think you can play immediately at another school after signing a LOI if you are released.

The only reason I could see him not being immediately eligible is if he was an EE.

Was he enrolled already ?

That was different because of SC's sanctions. Freshmen and Sophomores were given free releases.

Yes. That example is on point.

If you're not enrolled and the school gives you a release then you're free to play that fall. That's why the LB from Fsu didn't go to USC , he'd had to sit out a year because they wouldn't give him a full release.

According to one of the articles I linked above, it said the NCAA overlords only allow juniors and seniors to transfer without penalty if a school is put on probation.

Yeah, pretty sure it was Lane and the AD that ok'd the release, not the NCAA.

Pretty sure the NCAA opened up the USC recruits after their penalties were announced. Different situation.

exactly, they misled seantrel about the upcoming sanctions so he was allowed to transfer. they thought if they misled kids and they signed, the kids were trapped.
