DT Board (Portal 2024 Edition)

Moten, Blay, Scott, Horton/Jones

Respectfully, Jones hasn't proven he's in the 2-deep discussion.

2-deep: Moten, Blay, Scott and Horton.
Prove You Belong: Jones and Russell (both redshirted freshmen so they have time)
True Freshmen: Simpson and Newton. Both long-term projects

then there's the desperation option of moving Bain, Mesidor or Blount inside. Not ideal.

The truth is, we are super thin at DT. Our backups are all young and development guys. We need another playoff caliber starter from the portal, ideally a 320+ NG. You cannot run with just 4 guys, as 1 will almost certainly get injured, and often 2 at the same time. We're playing with fire at DT just like we did at DB last year.

Realistically we just have 3 too

Moten, Blay and Scott. Horton has been injured way too much to include him as "servicible" even.

Agree. And when he comes back, maybe he looks like the DT version of Arroyo, and maybe like the DT version of Chase Smith (so far, hoping he has a breakout year this season). You just can't count on him. It's also nonsensical to argue we should move Bain or Mesidor inside when neither wants the move and both look better at end. GO out and get a legit proven DT.

The little Horton has been out there at DT he noticeably flashed. But we definitely need 1 more portal DT.

No argument. A healthy Horton could be the missing piece. But I think it's insane to rely on him given his track record. And again, what happens if we have one or two injuries inside. We have to move Bain and Mesidor back in? That's not a championship move.

Agreed. I think Artavious will take a step forward this year, so we are working with only 5.

Way too thin, and we don’t have a Jon Ford type to eat double teams so Blay and Scott can get upfield.

That hurt us last year because Barrow was not a Nose.

We need a space eating NT badly.

Yes. Though I wouldn't call it desperate as you do as Mesidor and/or Bain will obviously kick in probably 20-33% of the time. Pass downs do exist even though people try to act like they don't. Those snaps count towards the total that need to be accounted for. Also an Odd front makes a lot of sense with our lineup, which requires fewer DT snaps even. And as you say we have four guys we can likely bank on for a lot of snaps. And I think Jones is on another level of "prove yourself" than Russell. I think Jones seeing snaps seems likely, whereas Russell I'd view as unlikely right now.

I don't think we're super thin. Idk if we need a "Playoff caliber guy", as that would be very expensive and likely very limited options in Spring. Unless you consider playoff Caliber to just be a guy that's better than solid... I do agree that ideally it's a 320lb type of NT though.

Strongly disagree. The marginal cost of a DT1, WR1 and LB1 is what, 2-3M collectively minus the 1.5M you'd pay for a good not great option? So an extra 1M or so. You've already invested in staff upgrades, Beck, a crapload of DBs, Daniels, the C, all the high level recruits for the past three years. It makes zero sense at this point to skimp on money. Especially with ACC rev sharing. We need to get to the ACCCG and playoffs this year.

Need to develop what we have ....tired of valuable guys leaving....only portal additions should be early round material....spent way too much on guys that didn't live up to their so called pro potential.... LB and WR is a different story ....

…that assumes you aren’t already near your max spending ability lol.

“Skimping on money” is something you can only do if you don’t have a cap. Everything you have as an example of us spending is why we may not be able to afford so many more top additions…

And a top DT and Top WR are like two of the 3-4 most expensive additions you can make. And we obviously just went for one of most expensive QB options....

I understand your argument, I just don't accept it. If we had made the ACCCG and playoffs last season, maybe it would be worth the risk of not investing on those positions. But missing again will hurt us much more profoundly this time around. IMO, we must get there now. And if that is the premise, then the program has to consider all those other budgetary decisions as sunk costs and only look at the incremental cost of those few extra positions versus the incremental probability of making the ACCCG and playoffs this season. It's the only rational investment approach right now.

Easy to say, but again if you’re limited on money you’re limited on money. To me I’d want a WR far more than DT. If funds are limited I’d take top WR over top DT this spring. I’d probably also go for the top LB over the top DT, though I think that’s much cheaper. I think getting a solid NT would be more than good enough, given what else we already have on the DLine
