Do we have a Playoff Roster?

Yes, after the portal additions, WR, LB, S, DT, depth OL and depth RB. It would be huge if Rodriguez, Horton and Damari stay healthy. I would seriously consider 2 LB's if we are playing more 4-3 than 4-2-5 which appears possible. I will not be surprised if Damari wins the nickel if healthy.

Looking at the top two players at each position, do we have the talent and depth to be a top 12/playoff team?

QB -
  1. Carson Beck
  2. Emory Williams
Synopsis: With Beck we once again will have a 1st-3rd Round NFL Talent and #1QB in the Transfer Portal at the helm. Drop off from Cam obviously, but should still be a strong position group Emory can be a serviceable backup

Cam masked a lot of our flaws with his supreme arm-talent, improvisational skills, and leadership ability. However, a solid game manager with good arm-talent can take our team to the CFP if the defense is solid and we get better talent at WR.

Wonder if Boise/Indiana/Arizona state where having this debate last year...

We are only need to be 1 of 2 in the ACC. Why not us....

We have a championship roster. It's my firm belief.

The question is: can the talent that we have be seasoned enough so that they can execute at the highest level they can execute? Very doubtful.

It's not just coaching. Are the players mentally prepared (and willing) to take the next step? I haven't seen anything that makes me believe that.

Is he practicing at nickel? There’s been chatter for months about him not wanting to play nickel or saftey

There's like 5 kids on the defensive 4-deep who would start on other power-5 teams.
You can’t be serious here. You can’t really think that more than half of our defensive starters are G5 players. Would they start for Ohio State? Probably not but you realize UCF, Mississippi State, Nebraska and Wake Forest are all P4 programs.

We absolutely have a playoff roster. We had a playoff roster last year too but fans seem to always want to throw the players under the boss to save bad coaching. It’s not a 4 team playoff anymore where only the elite teams get invited. There’s 12 teams. And you don’t even really have to be a top 12 team. Miami essentially has to be the second best ACC team, which is not exactly some incredible feat, to make the playoffs. You’re not going to convince me that SMU has a more talented roster than Miami.

We don’t have a surefire playoff lock type of roster by that wasn’t the question. Miami needs to stay fairly healthy and have some high potential guys become high production guys. Which is something you could say for every playoff contender.

People have this weird idea that every other team is loaded with returning production and they have no question marks while everyone who wasn’t named an All American at Miami last year is a huge question mark and can’t be counted on. Look at the other contenders. They all have questions. Some have new quarterbacks who haven’t played much, if at all. Some teams with returning quality quarterbacks are replacing a majority of their defense.

With the expanded playoff format, yes. Do we have a roster to make a deep run, no.

WR
TE
DL
LB
S
Coaching

All have questions at this point. Even if they are answered 50% in the affirmative, not good enough.

This time last year Did Arizona State have a playoff roster?
This time last year Did Alabama have a playoff roster?

Both answers and results are different there.

Think the real questions
1. Do we have a top two roster in the ACC? Yes we do. Then we should be a playoff roster considering where we sit in the ACC.
2. Will we finish top 2 in the ACC? We should. We also should have last year and did not.

Long winded answer of we do have a playoff roster, technically, but it doesn’t matter. The floor and overall talent of the team has improved from last year though IMO.

Miami may have the highest blue chip ratio of the ACC teams this season. Miami was second to Clemson last year. Hasn't stopped Mario from choking on a croqueta when it matters.

I'm as curious to see Dawson without Ward as I am to see Mario without Borregales.

I'm not sure we had a playoff roster last year, because the defense was so bad defending the pass it offset the playoff caliber offense.

It was more a talent issue in the backend IMO than coaching.

You lost Kam, James, Tecory, and Davis.

Didnt replace adaquately.

The same DC year before put a competent defense on the field.

I think Miami has a top 12 roster if Beck is healthy.

This is the right answer.

4 team playoff…no
12 team playoff…yes

Our team is not elite, not even close. But who are the top elite teams? In years past we could all name about 5-6 teams that would be in the mix every year. (Bama, Ohio St, Clemson, UGA, ND, Oregon, couple others). I can’t even tell you the top 4 teams this year, let alone 12 teams.

It’s not necessarily the roster that makes me question if Miami is a playoff team. It’s the coaches/coaching. Will they play the right players or just the players who’ve been there the longest? Will they make the right calls, have good game time management? Have they really instilled a culture of being physical and winning into these boys?

Roster wise, Miami has a top 10 composite team. We certainly have a better squad than half the teams that made it to the playoffs last and who will make it this year.

IMO, I think we will be a better rounded team than last year. We still have a spring portal window to get through as well that could potentially add some pieces and push the roster floor up even more. As usual with Miami, it's going to come down to coaching.

Weirdly enough, I feel oddly confident going against ND week 1. They lost a good amount of pieces as well and Mario has shown he can have a team ready for big games in week 1 before.
