Do we have a Playoff Roster?

Nobody knows what we have.
Too many question marks on the young or injured guys. Do we have that top 10 pick guy at d tackle?

Brand new DC and I’ve seen this movie before. We hype up our coaches when they get here just like we hype up our freshman.

Well just like Ms Jackson said “what have you done for me lately”.

But imo, until we have a dominant defensive line with monsters at DT we will not be back.

So if anything we can ask about the season and not so much the roster.
If we make the playoffs, can we be the 83 canes? Or are we gonna be the yearly speed bump that pops its head in the playoffs every year and gets rag dolled.

I don’t want to be Washington, tcu, or the 2018 notre dame team. If we make the playoffs and lose a game; then we better make them earn it.

I think the original question meant is it a playoff caliber roster on paper as you mentioned no one knows until bullets are flying.

But on paper I think the answer is yes. I also think there is obvious disparity in the 12 teams. If you compared that roster with Texas, Georgia, OSU and it was still a 4 team playoff my answer would be no.

However compare that roster to Indiana, SMU, Tennessee, I say yes so while I agree with playoff roster we are on the low end of that ticket based on paper alone.

Just on paper, our roster is notches above SMU, Tennessee and Indiana lol. Also, Georgia probably closer to us talent wise than they are with Texas and OSU

2 points of disagreement

1. "Emory can be a serviceable backup"
- No the fuxk he can't

2. "& Bell potential 1st rounders"
-
Bell is not a potential 1st rounder

Mauigoa sure, Bell, there is no evidence to support that claim. His film from last season does not suggest a team would draft him in the 1st round.

In order for him to catapult his stock into 1st round grade territory this season, he would have to match the play of players like Kelvin Banks, Will Campbell, Armand Membou, Josh Conerly, Josh Simmons, Donovan Jackson etc.. Something he hasn't done.

But other than that, I don't wholly disagree with the rest of the assessment.

I'd say we do have a playoff roster.

Will we actually make the playoffs is an entirely different discussion, but on paper we do have enough to be one of the 12 playoff teams.
Boise St, SMU and Arizona St had playoff rosters in 2024. The real question is do we have a playoff caliber coaching staff?

If Bell just has a average to above average season, he's likely going top 75 (Mid 2nd-early first range) just from his size alone. If he can play at an all-acc type level, there is no doubt he can fall into the first round. Scouts are going to take one look at the measurables and immediately fall in love with him as a prospect. He benefited a lot from getting snaps in 2024 and with another full offseason with Mirabal, I would be shocked if he didn't continue to elevate his game. You know the staff loves him, as you always hear stories of them raving about him to scouts

this roster is more than enough to win the ACC
i think a better question is do we have a coaching staff that is playoff caliber now with our recent changes this year

This time last year Did Arizona State have a playoff roster?
This time last year Did Alabama have a playoff roster?

Both answers and results are different there.

Think the real questions
1. Do we have a top two roster in the ACC? Yes we do. Then we should be a playoff roster considering where we sit in the ACC.
2. Will we finish top 2 in the ACC? We should. We also should have last year and did not.

Long winded answer of we do have a playoff roster, technically, but it doesn’t matter. The floor and overall talent of the team has improved from last year though IMO.
Do you think Alabama or ASU’s coaching staff could’ve taken our roster to the playoffs last year?

Looking at the top two players at each position, do we have the talent and depth to be a top 12/playoff team?

QB -
  1. Carson Beck
  2. Emory Williams
Synopsis: With Beck we once again will have a 1st-3rd Round NFL Talent and #1QB in the Transfer Portal at the helm. Drop off from Cam obviously, but should still be a strong position group Emory can be a serviceable backup

RB -
  1. Mark Fletcher
  2. Jordan Lyle
Synopsis: Two really strong backs with experience. We should see more explosive runs from Lyle this year and Fletcher is very solid and reliable workhorse. Shouldn't see much drop off from last year. Depth is a concern though with two small scatback types (CWH and Pringle) next on the depth chart, Lofton to get some carries here too

TE -
  1. Elija Lofton
  2. Alex Bauman
Synopsis: Best football player on the team, excited to see Lofton shine this year. Could be a go to guy for Beck. Bauman is a very solid #2 as well

WR 1 -
  1. JoJo Trader
  2. Ny Carr
WR 2 -
  1. CJ Daniels
  2. Joshua Moore
WR - Slot
  1. Ray Ray Joseph
  2. Malachi Toney
Synopsis: Lots of question marks here compared to last year. Can JoJo step up and be a true #1. Can Ray Ray somewhat fill Restrepo's shoes. Do we grab a portal WR? How much of an impact do the freshman make (Toney, Moore, Upshaw)

LT -
  1. Markell Bell
  2. Samson Okunlola
LG -
  1. Matthew Mccoy
  2. Ryan Rodriquez
C -
  1. James Brockermeyer
  2. Nino Francavilla
RG -
  1. Anez Cooper
  2. Juan Minaya
RT -
  1. Francis Mauigoa
  2. Tommy Kinsler
Synopsis: Experienced and NFL talented (Francis & Bell potential 1st rounders with Cooper and Brockermeyer also draft-able talents, there's no reason our OL shouldn't be the strength of the team. Questionable depth behind the starting 5; will we see what Samson and Kinsler can do this year

DE 1 -
  1. Rueben Bain
  2. Malik Bryant/Cole McConathy/Hayden Lowe
DE 2 -
  1. Akeem Mesidor
  2. Armando Blount
Synopsis: Lots of talent at DE, but also alot of question marks. Can Bain get back to his 2023 Form? Who steps up in the group of Blount, McConathy, Lowe, Pickett, etc.? Seems like Lightfoot and Rudolph still need time and look thin. Do we have a real threat off the edge to scare QBs and OCs.
DT 1 -
  1. David Blay
  2. Justin Scott

DT 2 -
  1. Ahmad Moten
  2. Josh Horton
Synopsis: Really solid top 4 IMO. If Scott and Horton take a jump and with Damien Lewis as the new DL coach this could be one of the most improved and impactful position groups on the team. Alot of talent behind the top 4 too with Artavius Jones, and Donta Simpson, and Mesidor and Bain can slide inside

WLB 1 -
  1. Wesley Bissainthe
  2. Cam Pruitt

MLB 2 -
  1. Raul Aguirre
  2. Jaylin Alderman/Kelln Wiley
Synopsis: No real game changers and potentially weakest position on the team. Need a big time LB in the portal if possible. If our defense struggles, the LB position could be why. Good thing is our DC is LB coach.

CB 1 -
  1. OJ Frederique
  2. Ethan O'Connor
Synopsis:

CB 2 -
  1. Xavier Lucas
  2. Damari Brown

Nickel -
  1. Charles Brantley
  2. Dylan Day

FS -
  1. Zechariah Poyser
  2. Markieth WIlliams

SS -
  1. Zaquan Patterson
  2. Dylan Day/Jadais Richard
Synopsis: Does the DB room go from a weakness to a strength this year. Two All-ACC type CBs in Lucas and OJ. Experienced depth in Brantley and O'Connor. Outside of Poyser, the safety room is a question mark. Does Day take a big leap, is Patterson ready, do we try Jadais Richard or Damari Brown at Safety. IMO Damari would be a great SS to team with Poyser at FS
We will be a playoff roster after the spring portal because we will fill the needs in that portal This team needs to reach that goal. WR#1, sideline, sideline, linebacker, and another safety. Add those three, and we are a playoff roster.

we have a playoff roster - last year we had one, as well. doesnt mean **** if you cant coach. last year might have been our best shot at playing in a title game bc Cam was generational.

It is not strange to think Judd is outplaying Emory.

If he wasn’t/can’t thats a bigger indictment of our ability or lack thereof to identify and develop QBs
i just remember the BS fed about emory all year last year and some even saying he may be better than Cam bc he wont look for the money plays lol. dude is trash and should never have been a Canes QB. same with judd.

this roster is more than enough to win the ACC
i think a better question is do we have a coaching staff that is playoff caliber now with our recent changes this year
im optimistic with the d staff. i trust the O staff.

i dont trust the HC with key decisions that come down to situational play calling or decision making. it screwed us multiple times the last few years including Cuse and the bowl game

We’ve been acc contenders on paper for the past 20 years. And on paper it hasn’t even been close to be honest. Especially against g5 and the acc basketball mafia.

Every team has a different situation and different schedules. If the playoffs were around before 2014 then Mark Richt may have won a championship with Uga.
If we still have the computer model Ohio state doesn’t win anything this year.

If notre dame wasn’t independent then maybe they don’t make the playoffs in 2018 either.

I’m done with the day one starter predictions or the “immediate impact” guys.
I no longer give a fck about what a position coach or a coordinator or a player did somewhere else. Until they do it here with a U on their chest or on their helmet, he’s just a JAG.

That goes for the portal too.
Yes they got great P4 tape against legit comp.

Idgaf. Do it here.
