Dmoney question on the defense

Since you have seen the team practice and scrimmage does the defense look better?

I have seen things saying they are faster but is the d-line better and is the D attacking more?

And are the Dbs playing tighter coverage in zone and man or are they still playing mostly soft zone?

The biggest difference in the defense is the amount of players in the 195-210 pound range who fly to the football. Carter, Crawford, Grace, a healthy Bush, even Fentress. It makes a difference in terms of team speed. The safeties also set a much different tone than Highsmith and Rodgers and it carries over to the rest of the team.

There is still uncertainty in terms of depth on the defensive line but Pierre/Heurtelou/Chick is the best starting unit Golden has had.

What about the corners are they up on the line playing in the face of the receivers?

It's the same scheme as last year. They are multiple and do different things. The personnel is better though, and I'd imagine Coach D will have more trust in his corners.

Do nose tackles still play patty cake?

Gamecocks rolled out a new 3-4 scheme. Apparently there's no easy button for implementing it.

Spurrier: "How'd y'all like that 3-4 defense? We got man-handled tonight. We got clobbered. We've got some coaching decisions to make."

Corch must be reading CIS calling out the scheme and the DC. Went HAM in the post-game presser.

So are we to assume that the DBs are still playing 10-15 yards off the WRs and bailing?

Is it still bend but don't break?

Are we going to be aggressive?

Are defenders still running to a spot and staying there, regardless of what's going on around them?

Is there any hope?

Gotta luv Spurriers interviews, he's a real straight shooter.

and Dmoney, I second the question about the Dt? Not trying to make fun.....just want to know if the philosophy looks the same as to whether they should still hold their gaps and let lbs do the work or do they get after the Qb themselves more.?

I'm gonna puke if our dbs are playing 10 yards off. ..
Better have that bucket handy. We've seen enough of D'Onofrio/Golden's defense by now to know what they are going to do schematically.
I have only seen the few clips from practice, but I noticed our receivers catching a lot of balls in open space of zone coverage. Unfortunately, I expect our D to look similar to last year with marginal improvement because the players are better

Those true freshmans CBs Lammons and Harris looked like pylons all night. They weren't very good defensively last year either, but they felt the impact of playing too many freshmans yesterday.

They gave up 700 yards yesterday, and it could have easily been 800 if Sumlin didn't ease up on the Old Ball Bag. I guess the OBB was being truthful a few days ago when he described his team as "decent".

Losing the best pass rusher in the nation is a big deal. You couple that with starting a bunch of freshmen in the secondary with out Clowney and it all snowballs into what happened last night. I am hopeful that having an older AQM and Chad Thomas will be immensely help our pass rush thus making everything else look better on defense.

so DMoney where do you think we end as far as stats for yardage and ppg given up?

should I be fully packed to board my mopemobile or should I be packing my tickets to Titletown?

My own personal thought is that outside of just looking at pure athleticism one would never know anything watching our D play our O because they are familiar with the personnel and the system. Our defense's biggest systematic problem in my mind is overthinking/confusion--however you want to word it semantically. Until they play a different offense with unfamiliar players and a different system, it's hard to predict how fast/slow they will be to react and how many mistakes they will make. It's not all that surprising that you hear about guys jumping routes all the time and getting/nearly getting pick sixes in practice but we never see that in games. Once you see Kaaya or Heaps do the same thing 5 times you're on it--that doesn't translate to a game.

Now that we have talent it will be interesting to see how this system works . It is hard to complain to much since up until this year we have had a mid major defensive talent thanks to Shannon and the NCAA mess . We are starting to get guys like Young, Thomas , Moten and and the 2 Juco DTs that are future earlier round NFL types so over the next 2 years i expect the D to take a huge leap . We improved last year ( went from worst or close to in it the country to just below average ) This year if we can just be decent ( top 50) with all the talent on O we should win 10-12 games instead of 9 . Next year though if we aren't top 25 i will be upset as now the talent is there.

Y'all know I've been very vocal against this defense, but I can admit that the talent so far in Golden/Doritos tenure has been subpar. DL who can't rush the passer, safeties who can't make a play on the ball, LBs who aren't very athletic. Just not Miami caliber players all over.

But in their 4th year, I think we can all agree that we have talent all over the defense. May not have great depth, but we have good starting talent. Good enough that we shouldn't have to play a soft cover-3 all game long in hopes that opposing offenses will eventually make a mistake.

Good enough that the bend but don't break that teams with athletic-disadvantages run should no longer be run here. If we go out there Monday night and see the same passive defense that they ran week 1 against Maryland and going back to their time at Temple, then we know this soft defense is who they are and we can never expect an elite, play making defense at Miami under these guys.

On what basis do you assert that Huertelou and Wyche will be early round picks? This is pure speculation at this point. ****, Wyche isn't even in the two-deep, given his lack of conditioning and relatively poor leg strength.
