DL Daylen Russell commits to Miami

View as article
He will be more like Bain - a 270/275 pound edge that can move inside on pass rushing downs.
With all due respect, this kid looks nothing like Bain as a prospect. Furthermore I cannot imagine Russell ever lining up at Edge here. I see this as a take based on excellent production in Dade's highest classification, great character and projecting him as a DT. From all accounts Russell is an extremely hard worker who loves football. He is a leader who is well respected in addition to being an excellent student.

High character kid with great production and the reigning DPOY from a local feeder school who the staff thinks projects to a solid workmanlike DT. They can't all be superstars and every team needs kids like this. Part of Mario's plan apparently involves taking high character, hard working local kids who produce but are not considered elite prospects in order to create a rock solid supporting foundation for the 4 and 5 star elite type players he is bringing in.

Lol at comparing Russell to Bain. Just stop. I'm good with the Russell take as we need as many bodies in that room as we can get and he's from a good school.

Nobody is comparing him to Bain's skillset. The comp is position and size. Russell is 270 but he's not a DT. He's a strong side DE that will probably move inside on passing downs.

I understand what you are saying as Russell's height and weight would naturally have many thinking of him as a SDE. The problem with that projection is that I don't see the athleticism required to play DE at this level whether it's on the strong side or not. Now, if we project him to DT then he does have the athleticism necessary to play inside at this level.

Just look at the DE prospects we have recruited/signed. It's clear that Russell does not fit the type of Edge/DE that we are bringing in. Russell must be a DT projection. It's the only thing that makes sense.

Has his size and weight been confirmed? I’ve asked a couple of times and no one seems to know…247 lists him at 235. Ouch, if accurate.

These are the kind of local 3 stars you don’t want to miss on that we have consistently not gotten/offered commitable offers to for 10+ years

@FrancisSawyer nailed this. No one is expecting bain or kelly.

Pros:
he has a motor and will keep running with plays.
he caused a good number of turn overs.
he has good speed for a larger human.

Cons:
He doesn't have a good bull rush which is important inside

If he has grown to 6'2 270lbs, I'll be interested to see how he does as a senior and if he gets more snaps inside.

Forgot to add, no actual changes to ranking you have to click their profile to get their actual composite ranking. CWH is 736 nationally. Plazz, Minaya, Anderson and Russell still outside the top 1000

Gotcha, it just caught my eye because I never saw Pruitt get a 4th star even on the composite. Some pictures changed too I think like Abram Murray’s, but I might just be imagining things.
