Dennis is chirping

... I mean "outside of his price tag" is doing a **** of a lot of heavy lifting there lol.

The fact is he does/will command one of the larger price tags of any QB we could go after. So why should that be ignored at all?

Would you take Mendoza + once of best remaining portal WR + top TE + maybe some left over .... Or Ewers?

Like TrumpyCane said if money wasn’t an issue you take Ewers

He has the best supporting cast in football and the most expensive roster in college football. Yet he’s mid and hurt all the time. As of now he’s leaning to leave to the pros which is hilarious to me but I’d rather him in the pros than Miami.
Who do you want is our quarterback next year cribby? I would have to imagine Mendoza because Emery just ain’t it.

You guys can clown on Ewers all you want but he’s 18-0 against unranked teams, last year was his first year starting full time, and he’s been injured majority of this year where he’s been limited

Half this board wanted to jerk off Mateer but against the 2 P4 teams he faced this year he was 26/53 for 360 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT. Over half his TDs came against Portland State, New Mexico, Utah State, San Jose State. He played a glorified G5 schedule

Outside of his price tag TrumpyCane thinks we’d be lucky to have Ewers as a bridge to Nickle, anyone who would prefer to have Mendoza or Emory over him is an idiot
First and third paragraph are fine. Middle one just screams “I didn’t watch any actual football and don’t have the ability to have a nuanced conversation about QB play”

But I personally would take Ewers over Emory and Mendoza if for no other reason than I think his name still carries more weight than this board would lead you to believe and I think it would help with getting other portal guys on board, and I think any gap between Mendoza and Ewers is negligible if it exists at all.

i think i would take ewers over the QB's in our room for one year, that is a no-brainer. The only one that might get upset would be williams and possibly transfer. Ewers is very good, except when he plays Georgia, not many defenses like GA in ACC. You guys making it sound like he is DJU or something, Ewers will command a lot of attention from a lot of teams if he does not go to NFL and payday.

TrumpyCane isn’t saying Mateer is bad or won’t be good but point was people on this board like to jump on one player and ride them like it’s no tomorrow and crap on anything else

Pass on Ewers just another Mac jones or Carson beck type QB who gets lifted up by the talent around him

Arch manning filled in and didn’t skip a beat for a dude who hadn’t started any games… he knows the writing on the wall and he won’t be welcomed back next season

Exactly

He would carve up anyone on our schedule next year except maybe Notre Dame, TrumpyCane thinks Dawson would be extremely happy with having him

it's all relative to what other options we have - IF Ewers did enter the portal, right now our other options (that we know of) would be Emory Williams and Mendoza

he's not cam ward, and he's not john mateer but you're kidding yourself if you think any team in the country is taking mendoza and emory Williams over quinn ewers

he's a playoff quarterback with NFL talent who has played good - not great for a back to back playoff team.

we need that leadership and experience and will need to trust in Dawson to help him take the next step similar to what Cam did
I think this is a reasonable take. I’m not a Ewers fan but if we can fix the defense and still have NIL money for Ewers, I think that’s got to be better than what we have or probably Mendoza. Mendoza vs Ewers - who’s better?

Regardless, please fix the defense

agreed. If we can get lucas and an LB then I'm feeling infinitely better about the defense. Wouldn't be upset about a DC change either

I think it's also telling that Quinn Ewers is starting for Texas when clearly they are high on Arch. Sark benched ewers for a few series already, he wouldn't keep starting Ewers to make him feel better.

If Texas trusts Ewers as their best shot to win a national championship over Arch Manning, do we want to pretend like we're too good for him?

idk, candidly I feel like Ewers is headed to the NFL - he's all Longhorn and I feel like his pride will get to him and he'll just declare to avoid the stigma of getting pushed out and forced to transfer by arch / sark

Yeah, I agree with your points and I don’t see him staying at Texas so going to the NFL may be his move. Not sure what his draft grade is right now but if it’s low, I can see him portaling. He’s a better option than Emory. I mean come on, he’s starting ahead of arch manning in the playoffs. Would Emory be starting ahead of Arch right now???

Mendoza vs Ewers - who’s better?

Thing is, nobody really knows the true answer of "who's better".

Ewers would have one year. He's piloted a higher-level team, but appears to be "off" right now. Not sure if he's nicked up still or just has lost some confidence/effectiveness. If he really felt like "I just need one more good year to go high in the draft", then Miami could make a lot of sense for him.

Mendoza has done a lot with a little. He's played almost two full seasons and would have two to play. I pointed out that if Cal had an effective FG kicker, they might be 10-2 and ahead of UM in the ACC rankings (lost by 5, 1, 2, 1, and 8 in five ACC losses, almost all of which featured one or more missed FGs that would have won the game). He seems to be getting better as he matures and could benefit from a better OL (fewer sacks) and better WRs (more TD passes).

I'm not sure this is as profound a differential as Manning vs. Leaf.
