Defense Saved The Season

Wake Forest played like WF in the second half. All these teams play their best game of their seasons first three qtrs.

But, the kids on D kept playing hard, which is commendable. They took the spark and ran with it. Need to find a way to do that for all 4 qtrs.

Wake is trash but this defense has been hurt by trash offenses already so this is a nice step. Looked like they simplified a lot of things. Wake was shifting and using motion and our guys didn’t look completely lost outside of a handful of plays. Mesidor was a beast all game. Tyler Barron needs to accept his role as rotational defensive end.

I guess that you were too young to see Kirby Freeman play. Kirby was way worse than Wake’s QB.

You just named my worst starting QB ever at Miami

Against Marshall, Freeman was 8-21 for 83 yards
vs Oklahoma 3-10 for 17 yards (benched)
vs FSU 4-11 for 59 yards
vs NC State 1-14 for 84 yards

No surprise he transferred out of Miami after that season. Him and Wright were awful

Yup, something was different today.

Some folks have been observing that our problems on defense were purely talent related. I'm not aware we added any new players to the roster over the past couple weeks.

So what changed? Other posters are correctly noting that we moved players around, which is great but these players have been on the team all year. These changes could/should have been made earlier. Who's responsible for this? And TV commenter correctly noted that we played a lot more base 4-3. That put Jaylin Alderman on the field for a lot of the game and he played really well. Etc.

These changes all could have been made earlier in the season. We apparently didn't need a talent upgrade to achieve todays's result. Today's players have been on the team all year long.

If our defense played Kirby, not even Kirby would have a good game. Although he did win at Dookie Campbell. Kirnobyl to Epps!

Without going back and rewatching the game I did notice a lot more three linebacker formations. We played a lot bigger in the interior with Moten and Clark getting a lot of action when they haven’t seen the field much this year. We brought pressure on early downs quite a bit but I also don’t think Wake attacked our edges as much as Georigia Tech and Virginia tech did. They tried to run it right as us and our front was solid.
