Darian Mensah received a deal from Duke that is believed to pay him $8 million over two years

People keep saying this, it was ALWAYS like this. The only difference is that the talent was drastically underpaid and coaches, administrators and everyone else was able to benefit from the players not being able to participate in the free market.

Imagine how much a guy like Eric ****erson would get today, he was worth far more than a Trans Am.

No, it wasn’t always like this. This isn’t the a same as some of the best players getting cars and cash behind the scenes like the old days.

Players are openly being paid more than NFL starters and they can switch teams multiple times much more easily than NFL players can (without even having to sit out a year).

It’s completely different from how things used to be.

The problem isn’t the money. It’s the ability to transfer 4 times in 4 years of playing. It’s openly encourages players to renegotiate every year to up the bag. If someone is going to up the price by 50k, 100k, 1M a year each year you would be stupid not to, Especially cuz the NFL isn’t guaranteed.

If Duke didn't have the money, they wouldn't have spent it. They got a very good player and he will make their program more than 8 million dollars without a doubt.

There is a 0% chance Duke paid Darian Mensah $8,000,000 over two years.

John Mateer didn't sniff that kind of money—and even had Bill Belichick entering the convo.

If North Carolina wanted Mensah, Belichick would've back up the Brinks truck like they tried for Mateer.

The market for Mensah was nowhere near what Mateer's was; zero reason for Duke to have to pay him that way when there weren't any other suitors even CLOSE to wanting to pay big for him.

Idk man the Vols paid Nico 8 and he hasn’t been worth the money
Being worth it and what the market commands are two different things entirely.... Look what just happened in the pro's with Kirk Cousins....
If you're thought of as being a top tier QB you will command whatever the going rate is plus.... There's no way under the current way of things to avoid it....

This is what everyone wanted, but was too stupid to see coming. No professional sport has a “free market.” They have salary caps. This is on everyone involved not being smart enough to get a revenue sharing deal done years ago that would give each school an allotted amount of cash to spread around a roster.
MLB doesn’t have a salary cap. Their players make more than any other pro sports league in the US. Leagues with salary caps only have them because players and owners collectively bargained for them. Players agreed to limit salaries in exchange for more free agent rights. The other 99.9% of the people in this country don’t have limits on what they’re allowed to get paid. You are worth what someone is willing to pay you.

That is why I like NIL but hate the transfer portal. I understand coaches can come and go but at some point the portal needs to go back to what it used to be in my opinion. I think they should get 1 transfer, after that if they choose to transfer they sit a year. I know it's not a popular opinion but there's no more need for these guys to compete like the old days. They'll just find somewhere else to pay them and possibly not have to work as hard.

Merry Christmas Canes family!!

Correct. No way. This is a PR move by Duke. We’re at the top of the market negotiating in a $2mm base range.
