Darian Mensah received a deal from Duke that is believed to pay him $8 million over two years

This is what everyone wanted, but was too stupid to see coming. No professional sport has a “free market.” They have salary caps. This is on everyone involved not being smart enough to get a revenue sharing deal done years ago that would give each school an allotted amount of cash to spread around a roster.

It is true that professional sports in this country employ some sort of salary cap structure, but even then some franchises are more equal than others.
Personally, I'm glad the athletes have more freedom to move and are getting opportunities to make a little money off their name but it is also ruining college football at the same time. It is turning the sport into 7v7 basketball garbage.
But so it is in high school as well.

Now we know why he committed so fast.

I bet his agent told him to sign that contract before they could even think about reconsidering.
Yeah, I'd been wondering why he jumped onboard with Duke that fast instead of seeing what bigger programs offered. If that amount is true, it's insane

College sports were always known as “Amateur Athletics,” as opposed to professional.

College football, as we knew it, is dead and gone.
The university names aren't much more than sponsorship names now. Really not much to do with school anymore

That’s what I’m saying. All it would’ve taken is a rev sharing CBA between players and the NCAA. Would’ve solved everything.

It's ludicrous!

This is why you build with high school recruiting.
Can sign those contracts with the HS players for four years with a performance expectation (i.e. if your not a major contributor by year three) the team can send you to the portal.

This is just players from schools that don't have great contracts legally anyway, maybe that's me thinking too much into it.
Miami doesn't seam to lose players that they don't want to lose or ok with it. They've been at the forefront of college contracts and NIL it seems and thy have Ruiz who's got a law firm on his shoulders.

It's going to end up just like the NFL draft - 4-5 teams go all-in for a top tier QB each year, and usually only one of them ends up being worth it. Hate it if you want, but we all saw what having Cam Ward did for Miami. Someone will strike lightning each year, just a matter of who.

People keep saying this, it was ALWAYS like this. The only difference is that the talent was drastically underpaid and coaches, administrators and everyone else was able to benefit from the players not being able to participate in the free market.

Imagine how much a guy like Eric ****erson would get today, he was worth far more than a Trans Am.

That would require players to be allowed to collectively bargain.
