DAILY DEBATE: Who will be our top CB this year?

If we want the best 5 DBs on the field as much as possible Idk how that isn't something like:

S - Poyser / Dylan Day / Markeith / Fitzgerald (if single high)
S - Lucas / Damari or Patterson / Richard
OCB - OJ / Antione / Fitzgerald / Ryan Mack
Nickel - Brantley / Damari / Ewald /
OCB - O'Conner or Brantley / Karnley or Jadais Richard

And then Damari as either Big Nickel or moved to safety as well. Honestly and 1-2 of Lucas, Damari, and Richard could all probably be better for us at safety. But that would probably make us too inexperienced at CB...
I prefer Lucas at CB because the above makes us too I experienced at CB. Get another Safety in the portal while Day/Patterson/Markieth Williams battle for reps opposite Poyser.

Yeah I get that which is why I mentioned it, but ultimately we have like 4 good starting level CBs currently on the roster (one of whom used to be a safety in Lucas), and only one proven starting level safety on the roster currently. Logically it just makes sense to have Lucas (and Damari too at Nickel+Safety) at Safety right now. Also easier said than done to get a starting level Safety out of the portal imo and is kinda playing with fire a bit too. And at the end of the day Lucas at CB guarantees one of O'Conner/Brantley/Lucas/OJ isn't on the field a large percentage of the plays, which imo is a problem. We KNOW we have 5 good DBs and some may say 6 if you include Damari. So ideally we find the way to get those guys already on the roster on the field as much as we can

Lucas can always move back to CB if injuries happen. We should still go for a safety in the portal, I just don't think we should force ourselves to need a starting level guy. @Memnon just posted a good looking safety that just entered the portal in the portal DB thread. But like I wouldn't want to NEED to land a starting Safety in spring portal. I'd want a cheaper rotational type. I want the majority of our Spring portal money going to 1. Top WR available. 2. top 3-down LB available. 3. DT, ideally a NT type. 4. Rotational Safety and a 2nd WRs....

I'll respond to the above post a bit later as I am out and about right now. What about QB? What are your thoughts on grabbing another qb in the portal in case Beck goes down during the season? It would probably have to be someone with multiple years of eligibility remaining. What say you? Is that even feasible considering our QB situation?

I wouldn't turn it down, I just don't honestly think we are going to be able to get any QB in Spring Portal that is worth literally anything to the point we'd be like "I feel good with our backup if Beck went down". No shot. And it would have nothing to do with our ability to recruit a guy like that, as much as the fact no QB worth even a guaranteed backup spot is even available in spring.

Like last Spring Portal at QB was atrocious. I don't even know who moved after April... like Jeff Simms from Nebraska to ASU who is ***, General Booty (lol) from OU to Louisiana who is ***, Jaden Rashada from ASU to UGA (who is back in portal and yet to find a landing spot), and literally like Jacurri Brown from us to USF... There is nobody anyone on here would like as anything more than a guy to hand the ball off just like Emory that will be available in Spring at QB imo. I think it'd be a total waste of time.

I'd 100% hand the keys off to Nickel or at worst have to have Emory come in and game manage an end of game if necessary. He knows the offense at least, and by all indication is a good team guy. I guess one option I'd consider most would be if there was some older Run-First type of QB in the portal. Because I wouldn't trust ANY Qb in spring portal to be able to throw good. But at least if you added a guy who could be a legit run threat at the very least, maybe you could just run conservative ground and pound to a win... I just don't see why we wouldn't throw Nickel out into the fire and see if he survives if neccessary tbh.

Coach, Do you like Lucas better at CB or Safety on this level? I'm sure he could excel at either but what is your opinion? Also what is Lucas's best attribute?
Hmmm that's tough. That length and speed at CB is so valuable and rare.

He was moved to CB when he transferred to Dillard, and I originally hated it. His lanky frame had a lot of difficulty getting in/out of breaks to cover in-breaking routes. You couldn't complete anything vertical/deep on him but he would struggle with smaller/quicker WR's.

His DB coach/mentor has done a good job working with him and it looks like he has gotten a lot better at the craft.

With that being said... if he's able to play with lower pad level and cover quicker/in-breaking routes...I love him at CB.
6'2" with 10.5 speed at CB is crazy and likely makes him a 1st round pick.

That isn’t even a Question Anymore , Xavier Lucas has established himself as CB1 on the Team .It’s not even Close.

As am I. Would love to have a guy with Lucas’s measurable covering the slot, blitzing, creating chaos. Feel like we have some much better options at db this season.
No you don’t ,Slot Receiver are the quicker & twichy Recievers like Eugene Wilson you want a Brantly on.
I think they will platoon there based on the opponent.

But Demari can play it too if it’s bigger Recievers playing like Syracuse.By the way Syracuse was Damari first game back don’t know how much to Grade him on that one. Nobody played well that Game.

What was Hetherman does schematically, you need a cover-guy at Nickel most of the time. (his words)

The best thing to do is train multiple guys at that position, and adjust personnel depending on opponent. (which is what we're doing)

Brantley, Brown, Pruitt, etc...are all learning how to play that spot.

I'm so glad to hear that Pruitt is getting reps at Nickel. Vs certain teams and in certain matchups, Pruitt could really excel at that spot.
