DAILY DEBATE: What changes do you want to see on defense?

Simple. Want Guidry gone. Even D’Nofrijoles didn’t suffocate talent use this much.

I want to see the new defensive coordinator getting our players playing smart, disciplined defense. It's been so long since we've seen that here.

Actually utilize the portal this year.
Could have rebuilt the entire secondary in the portal last year but we chose not to...
Don't make that mistake again, we got a lot of dummies back there to replace.

Defensive Coordinator - Someone who is younger, gritty, high IQ, makes adjustments on the fly who players want to play for. Don’t wanna hear politically correct post game interviews. Take accountability & fix in game.

DLine: We have the skill here. We just need discipline & perhaps a 1Tech. Bain needs to have the best off-season yet.

LB: Sideline to sideline guys who can shift the dline when needed so we aren’t out leveraged.

DB: Physical guys who can play press or zone , tackle in space. Safety has to be the smartest on the field and make the necessary checks, would love to have somebody put fear in defenses

Essentially we gotta get back to a true dawg mentality & that starts with EVERY PLAYER AND COACH. Critical portal off season

-Finish tackles. I couldn’t believe how many times opposing players ran through our tackles. It was embarrassing.
-Setting the edge. The whole season reminded me of 2017 Pitt.
-move Bain to 3 tech
-we need a dynamic nickel. Not saying Davis was dynamic we sorely missed him this year.
-stop putting our corners on an island if they can’t compete. More zone and let college QBs make mistakes.
-alignment. That’s all

Players holding themselves accountable for their mental lapses.

I see it so differently from the majority of the board because I actually know plays & know Defensive calls. So when a big plays happen I identified almost immediately where the mistake was made & which player didn't follow his assignment.

People won't see it until next season, but yall really don't get how undisciplined & downright dumb our Defense played this year.

I get it, we gotta hang Guidry in the town square & put all on the blame on him, hate to be the bearer of bad news, but like 80-90% of the issues on Defense were player mistakes.
I have zero X's and O's knowledge and I saw the pre-snap confusion multiple times. The question becomes how could they correct that? We didn't have a lot of depth and that's a glaring failure of last year's portal activity.

X’s and O’s can’t fix this @RVACane also mentioned we do less with more then any team .
I laughed then said he’s 🎯 on and your X’s O’s is no fix , I also laughed and your 🎯 on.

I’ve never seen anything like it , we were the greatest O in CFB and we were terrible, I can’t believe I just said this geeeez .

The Greatest O couldn’t score in the most important game of the year .

I’m at a total loss for any solutions, next year we are going to lose (5) games period minimum.

Yet I’m so happy we missed playoffs the humiliation would’ve been unbearable to watch.

I tend to agree with this assessment.
Guidry had a pretty strong defense at Marshall.
Did he, all of a sudden, become incompetent?

The frustrating thing is that Mario expressed the correct answer multiple times during the bye week before the loss.

"Alignment, Assignment, Communication and Tackling."

They knew what the issue was, they just couldn't get it fixed for some reason.

The only spot on defense where there's clearly a talent issue is the secondary. We saw our CBs get burned again and again and lose 1x1 battles against Syracuse in embarrassing ways. That whole room needs a talent upgrade - CB and Safety.

Outside of that, it's coaching. Scheme... maybe... but just basic execution more than anything. Our defense had probably the worst fundamentals of any defense I've watched in years.

9 new starters. Bain and Frédérique are the only playoff-caliber starting defenders on the roster today.

I don't know **** about our defensive calls & plays, but I see it the same way. I don't think there's any coach in America that is coaching their players to NOT set the edge or NOT pass off assignments in the back. No coach is coaching their players to line up wrong or miss tackles.

So yeah, it's player mistakes. But see, I still blame coaching for that. Coaching IMO isn't just X's and O's and calling the right plays, it's also teaching and holding players accountable.

I want our next DC to have a personality like Brent Key - just walking around all day red in the face with a ****ed off disposistion and a permanent frown. Our coaches are too happy-go-lucky talking about cajun food and whatnot, and I hate to call back to the Coker era but I do wonder if our practices don't have some "camp cupcake" to them.

Cristobal seems like a nice and friendly guy. Guidry seems like a nice and friendly guy. But we have discipline issues all over the field - penalties, lack of focus, lack of knowing your assignment, fundamentals etc. When you have discipline issues, I feel like you need a disciplinarian set them straight. JMO.

If it were the players why not sit them or are the back ups just that bad. He doesn’t appear to recruit well either but I could be wrong.

mopes won't like you first two statements ... mc is the root of everything, even tho he himself showed great improvement in regards to game management and allowing his coordinators to coach
