Jason Taylor calling defensive plays
Honestly I was very pro-“Play shell coverage and try to make offenses drive methodically, if we clean up the big plays the defense is fine”…. And then last week happened. Part of me almost thinks just go man heavy, send Kiko through the A gap every single play he’s on the field (literally. Every one.), and just hope either you cause some havoc or they score quick and keep the offense off the bench. I don’t know that we can cover in man or zone.
But seriously. As others have mentioned, just be ******* lined up and not clearly out-leveraged before the ball is even snapped. So many plays where the offense has a clear numbers advantage that anyone can see and you don’t even have to understand football to know the geometry is against us.
Coverage wasn’t our biggest issue but I definitely wouldn’t classify it as “fine.” Tech had dudes wide open on multiple 3rd down and obvious plays—on top of the ones they converted—and either missed an easy throw or dropped an easy catch (I’m still shook by that 3rd and 12 where we covered the slot receiver to the near side with the safety from the far hash, I thought I was seeing things)Coverage was fine. It was the run defense that sunk us. Got to set the edge and tackle.
Combine that with simple zone coverages and cut the stunts, we should be better.
