DAILY DEBATE: Should Francois Mauigoa move to guard?

Up to you.

If I moved him to guard, it would be Rivers at LT and Bell or McCoy at RT.

We’ve had a lot of movement over the yrs, but wasn’t Rivers at LT once upon a time & struggled mightily?

I’m just not seeing what options on the roster to put at Tackle. McCoy doesn’t have the feet to play T, & Bell is an unknown. So imo, no. I know Francis had some rookie moments at Tackle, but he’s a true Tackle, & he held his own w/ limited collegiate experience imo.

Honestly I don't understand your first sentence at alll. Rivers is our LT. Like is the once upon a time refering to last year and this year? In which case he didn't struggle mightily. Idk..

Anyways, Mauigoa is a 5star talent that has 2 years here left. He should be the guy we absolutely want to keep at RT. Also the idea that LT and RT are much different values, is pretty much generally not true now. So if people are saying move him from Right because it's like less valuable than left, that's pretty much pointless imo. The true competition is at LT and LG. We need the best LT/LG combo amongst Rivers, Okunlola, McCoy, Bell, and Kinsler for this year. To me this would be Rivers starting no matter what, and then wherever the next best guy is between LT/LG determines whether Rivers is at LT or LG.

For next year I could see all types of different layouts. Just for fun:

RT in college, G in the pros.

I'd move Jalen Rivers to G before Mauigoa. He's a good, maybe somewhere All-Conference LT in college, would be a very good and very much a pro G. Mauigoa is a top end college RT (maybe All-American candidate), and I think can be a tackle in the pros, too. But most likely a guard. Depends on the team.

I think I was one of the first people to suggest moving him to guard because I was watching Cohen from last year and think Francis can be even better

But still ultimately best case scenario he stays at RT and develops the way we hope and someone steps up at LG

I kinda just suggested it because at the time the drop off from Cohen to whoever took over seemed steeper than Mauigoa to whoever would take over at RT

Same time we were so horrific at RT for years and it killed us that’s not something I would mess with

So it was kinda LG improves and RT hopefully doesn’t drop off as much vs LG drops off huge and RT gets better from him developing

Great question.

Let me preface my comment by saying I am unqualified to make this decision and am simply offering my opinion based on what I’ve seen live on Saturdays and the spring game.

I believe Francis is a better guard than tackle. He can be an elite guard and absolutely manhandle the interior of any defensive line while pulling with speed + power and annihilating anybody on the edge. He also struggled, at times, with speed rushers when playing tackle. His future is likely at guard in the NFL.

With that said, i probably would not move him because I have seen nothing, at this point, that makes me comfortable putting Samson or Bell at tackle.

Ultimately, this is Mirabal’s decision and I will ride with whatever he decides.
