Critique Thread

I want to give an opportunity to critique and point out stuff that need improvement
My critiques can't be improved on.. but since we're trying to **** slurpers off, I'll mope it up:
  • True deep ball guy ain't there. Jeremiah SmifF was a big miss
  • Special Teams - Very average. Ray Ray isn't Brashard
  • Run game - Martinez is great but I don't think we're built for power run. He'll be fine but a different skillset might have been more complimentary.
  • Think some of Cam's prior sacks/fumble issues come from holding onto the ball too long. It's also what makes special plays but at some point, it could cost us. Gasp
  • OL depth at tackle is scary (Bell ain't ready)

We fell asleep the last 10 minutes of the first half Saturday, backup OL looks shaky and 25 couldn’t cover me right now. About all I got at the moment.

You think the OL could be better at run blocking and the WRs need to be better at winning contested balls downfield?

Well, I think you’re correct. On both counts, to varying degrees.

OL has not been impressive on inside runs, which is a problem when your HC insists on proving his manhood through the performance of inside runs. No counters, few stretch plays, just big man move big man ball man run over big man first down do again.

Great coaches make winning easier, not harder. Mario has made a lot of things a whole lot easier, but this one area continues to confound me. (Also, I know we were down multiple starters. It shows that we don’t have “8 starters” on the line. Which is fine, few teams do.)

Downfield passing is very difficult without coverage busts or a combo of elite accuracy and high end skill sets at WR. I do not see an elite WR on this team from a traits-that-translate-to-deep-balls perspective, able to win contested catches consistently OR make Cam’s life a bit easier by creating separation downfield. It’s hard to do, and it hasn’t developed — yet. I also don’t think this team needs to blow the top off to be highly efficient, which seems to be more Mario/Dawson’s ethos. Lethal efficiency, not 2-3 play drives. It’s more sustainable, it wins more games (typically).

I’m less concerned about the latter than the former. If I had skill points to spend, I’m spending them all in Run Blocking, atm.

Good thread, OP. Good news is we will still win a ton of games, even with some flaws.
Thank you for the tremendous example of how to treat newcomers. You are truly a gentleman and a scholar.

This is mine. I had hopes for Jadais but it appears we’d need to be fully healthy with Damari, Diyoni, OJ and Darryl Porter playing to fully reach our potential

Special Teams has been average… except for kickoffs. Returns have been very meh.

Kinda early for this but I'll participate.

Run game - It could be a function of a stellar qb/pass game and the fact that UM has faced two big defensive fronts. It is hard to pass judgement this early. I like that the offense hasn't been stuffed at crucial times. With the QB that UM has, that's all that has been needed. However, I like having an OL that can impose their will run blocking. This unit has a bit more to prove i.m.h.o.

Catching the ball - there have been points left on the field due to either poor effort or bad form.

Special teams - decision making.

Penalties - showed up on Saturday after an out-freakin-standing performance against UF.

Fumble drills - jump on the ball. Nothing more, nothing less.

I have witnessed, felt, and discussed several positive things the last two weeks which is very deserved. I have seen a lack in things we can improve in which isn't bad but is necessary. I think we all know this canes team is really good and can be special. I am just curious and want to give an opportunity to critique and point out stuff that need improvement its still a long season. I will start this by saying our defense seems to be better than our offense which might be contrivertial, but I think we need to get better at hitting shots down field bc I feel we have missed a lot. Also I think our oline could get better at making some bigger holes for the run. Again I’m not complaining or saying we’re bad just looking for everyone’s thoughts on things that can improve because everything has been super super positive and I want to see us get better.

GO CANES
Controversial*

You can definitely see the change in attitude, depth, and excitement. I still belive Mario's coaching skills are way below average. Should have sat Cam down at half time and then play Poff a quarter and Williams a quarter. I would play some of the younger receivers too because I just don't see Brown as a special player at all. The OL is getting way too much hype. I think there are numerous games will we be challenged and the number 1 priority is to keep Cam healthy.
