Is this “smoke” hinting at UNC making behind the scenes moves to leave the ACC? “A proposed North Carolina bill, the “Restoring Rivalries Act” (house bill 469) would mandate that UNC and NC State play each other annually in football, basketball, baseball and softball , regardless of conference affiliation”.

UNC isn't going anywhere without approval from the UNCS Board of Governors, which is controlled by NC State alumni. Also there isn't any D1 conference that is more financially attached to one state like North Carolina is to the ACC. All of the ACC events in North Carolina brings in hundreds of millions of dollars a year for the state and I highly doubt the the BoG is going to let the ACC implode, just so that UNC's football program can get a 20-30 million more dollars a year. That's tax revenue that the state is not going to want to lose at all.

We hear rumors all the time that the SEC and B1G "want" UNC, but dealing with a whole state government is a whole lot larger than dealing with a school president or a school board of trustees. And at the end of the day, I feel like that Tobacco Road is just going to have to deal with rebuilding the ACC when other teams not tied down by state legislatures bolt for the SEC and B1G.

Would not be at all surprised in at least a couple (maybe a few) schools move prior to this timeline ... maybe as early as 26-27. There is now a defined exit cost with media rights. Networks just have to be convinced the $$ is there for added games in a conference and they can then make it happen. Seems like FSU + Clemson + UNC are all very active "behind the scenes". Is Miami? Who is carrying the ball for Miami? Certainly not Rad. Mas Brothers?

That regulation was passed a year ago - and NOW there is a new house bill being floated that would modify the ruling - stating that the two schools do not have to be IN the same conference but simply have to continue playing one another in 4 sports regardless of conference affiliation.

It all depends on $$$. Networks can make added $$ available if the programming makes sense. Adding a 9th conference game and bigger brand OOC games + in the case of the B10 - adding the state of Florida = incremental carriage fees. The same targets - FSU, Clemson, Miami, UNC. The ACC backfills with USF etc and the ACC continues to generate tourist revenue to Charlotte. Everybody wins.

I believe Miami, Northwestern, USC, SMU, Vanderbilt, etc. of this world need to ask themselves today the following questions:

1. Is particpation in "elite/super league" football +/or basketball critical to our university?
2. IF answer is YES to #1, then what are we going to do today and tomorrow(s) to position ourselves into 2030-2035 to secure our spot?

It appears Miami is at least a strong lean towards #1.

IF that report that Ohio State LOST money this year is true, I think many state schools will be asking themselves these existential questions as well.

Another poster pointed out Northwestern is completing an $850M stadium. So I'd assume they're committed to the A Leagues. SMU boosters are sustaining their move to the ACC with no profit sharing, so I'd assume they're in, too. No idea about Vandy.

Meanwhile, I attended the Miami game at BC two years ago. And I am quite confident they are NOT going to commit the resources to stay in the A League. I highly doubt Cuze and Wake are, either. And for all that Duke is #1 in BB, 85 players and the football operation are a heck of a lot more expensive. I'm not sure they're for real. And we know where Stanford is netting out.

Feels like either 2026 or '27 will be the last football season before the ACC unravels.

Folks speculate increased TV payouts are a stumbling block, but money always can be worked out if both sides are determined to make it happen.

The top brands in the ACC are desperate to leave. A "Mega SEC" is a legacy project for Sankey and the top brass at ESPN. They'll find a way.

Bring in 8 ACC schools at a dollar figure between the ACC and SEC media share and let them increase that number over a set amount of years.

Assuming the House vs NCAA matter is settled next month and official non-employee compensation is put in place July 1, college administrators will have a much better feel for what's in store. Then they can turn their attention to the P2 upgrade.

No school in either of the two true power conferences is getting kicked out.

The expense of competing at the highest level is just the cost of doing business for an institution like Duke or Northwestern. They wouldn't dare let their brands be damaged by competing in a league full of second- and third-rate brands, e.g. Stanford and Cal ditching Wazzu and Oregon State to become the Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars of the ACC.

Even a less-resourced lower tier P2 school like a Mississippi State would shutter its library and sell the books before it would drop out of the SEC

I didn't read anywhere about the bill you're talking about that would change the Board of Governors power to allow or disallow a member institution to leave their respective conference. The article below reads that if the Board of Governors does allow UNC to leave the ACC, that they are legally obligated to play NC State in various sports including football. To me it just seems like the NC government is doing all it can to provide roadblocks in keeping UNC and NC State in the ACC.

To the contrary ... that new bill ... if approved ... opens the door for UNC to leave the ACC without being hindered by NC State ... just has to play them in OOC games in 4 sports. "Coincidence" that this new bill is being tabled now? Don't believe in coincidences.
