Concerns for next year

Cornerback
At the corner position we are still very green. Howard got more pt by the end of the year but still struggled to adjust to college ball. Crawford didn't redshirt but didn't play that much cb either. At nickel we have two redshirts with no playing experience (Hope and Dortch) and the freshman Burns. I think we can overlook the potential struggles at the CB position due to the great talent we have amassed.

HEALTHY PORTER,,,,,we need an all acc year from him so he gets some attention from other teams....

Agree with everyone......Coley, and stopping the Run..

replacing kickers/punters

The best secondary in the world cannot cover their receivers forever. We had ZERO pass rush last year. We couldn't stop a decent running attack. What are the two most important aspects of a defense? 1) Stopping the run 2) Rushing the passer.

I'm concerned about Coley as a QB coach more than an OC. I think about the turnarounds Jacory and Stephen made under Fisch and I wouldn't be surprised to see some turnovers creep back into Stephen's game now that Jedd is gone.

I hope it doesn't happen obviously but it's not like FSU QBs were ever world beaters under Coley's tutelage.
coley was only the FSU QB coach for a couple of weeks after dameyune craig left for auburn

It's still a huge question mark. We got spoiled last year almost expecting 300+ yards and no turnovers from Stephen going into a game. If Mo isn't that efficient this year the defense had better improve a lot.

That just goes to illustrate my point. THe JEts have ZERO pass rush. Even Revis gets toasted this past year and before becuase he can'nt cover forever. And he MAY be the BEST IN THE NFL. Our guys aren't that good.... they got not shot to consistently stick with a guy for 7 seconds.

1) Pass Rush
2) Pass Rush
3) Pass Rush
4) Duke staying healthy
5) Pass Rush

This. Someone, anyone please come off the edge and sack the f'n QB. Don't let the QB sit back there with enough time to read the defense, eat a sandwich, flirt with an imaginary girlfriend, have said imaginary girlfriend die, give a tearful interview and then complete a pass. So sick of that.

I think Jenkins has the other spot locked up. Came on strong during the end of the year.

Not enough to go on IMO. And remember VT looked very promising when he was a freshman.

Actually I think CS's list is pretty spot on just have to add Porter's health

My Concerns:

RB depth- Duke slips on a banana peel in the offseason and gets hurt we are up $hits creek. Eduardo needs to get healthy and Danny Dillard needs to step up. For some reason I have always felt if Eduardo mentally knew that we NEEDED him and are depending on him he would really kick it into high gear and step up. Well..Here is his chance.

DT- After Porter/Pierre/Robinson, who is gonna take the next step? All we need is two and Im hoping its Ivory and Moore. King and Grimble have to be servicable. Time to earn those ships'.

DE- McCord has to know its his spot to take. Green will always be a Cane in my book but its time for him to step aside. He can be a good backup.

LB- How many times am I going to wake up and see a thread at the top saying, "Eddie Johnson suspended for this Saturdays game for undisclosed reasons. Golden will not go into detail except to say the young man needs to grow up and mature. Will re-evaluate him after Saturdays game." SMH. Come on Eddie!

That is really it. All other positions are good to go. I am expecting Jenkins to take that other Safety spot from Highsmith btw. AND I am expecting Robert Lockhart to step up at WR. This will be his 3rd year out of HS so he's not a kid anymore. No more hype talk. Lets see what you can do.

To stop a passing game, you can't stop it unless you put pressure on it. Now some people are good enough to put it on with a three-man rush; well, we're not. In fact, I don't know whether we're good enough to put it on with a four-man rush. If we have to send eight, we'll send eight, but we're not going to let you sit back there and pick us apart all day.

DT progression

thats concern 1. 2. & 3. for us for next year.

with a veteran OL, heisman hopeful RB, deep WR & TE and a senior QB that is a proven leader...all my concerns are on defense starting with stoping the run then putting pressure on the QB. We do those 2 things and we're going to have an incredible year!

We need to run the ball more frequently, and with physical intent, not flatfooted out of the shotgun. A warm weather balanced offense should feature 34-38 rushes per game, preferably the high end, like Georgia and South Carolina, which had 37+ last season. Stanford is very physical. They were a shade above 39.

Fisch was a ridiculous 30.9. That's volunteering to lose more than your share. He got too cute with the greed of scoring 40+ against stiffs as opposed to putting together a foundational style than can manage 24+ against top foes. Once you do that, the 40+ against stiffs will naturally tag along.

Morris needs better touch in the red zone. Along with running the ball often enough, that variable will dictate whether we we manage touchdowns or settle for field goals against top foes.

Against Florida, we'll own the energy and emotion for certain points early in the game but if it equates to field goals we're doomed, and it's ominous toward major games late in the season. Florida is going to wear us physically in the second half, just like their matchup at Texas A&M last season. We're improving athletically from position to position but Florida and FSU are simply more rugged and stingy.

Malcolm Lewis needs to be healthy. Pre injury I thought he was the second most clever and impressive newcomer last season, a special talent.

Defensively, just become a normal team. We haven't even been that. I've had to close my eyes at all the ghastly wide open spaces plays, when there's literally no defender in the picture and it looks like we're fielding 9 guys. Even in white uniforms we look skinny. Notre Dame made us look like twigs then the national championship game theme is now massive and strong Alabama looked in pre game warmups, compared to Notre Dame. Urban Meyer supposedly was turning his head in astonishment at the glaring difference between the two squads. I'm not a big believer in UTough. IMO, that's a crock, a band aid. You'll never catch up via that route. Get talented guys who are naturally huge.

Two or three disrupters need to emerge. McCord showed promise, also Terry. Porter is a huge piece toward mediocrity. That's meant as a compliment. I'm not as high on Pierre as others are. He gets too high and can be redirected. If anyone steps up at defensive tackle, that's a bonus. But when Golden concedes it's a fail I imagine he understands nobody will fully step up. The defensive backs are promising athletically. Very promising. Unless they demonstrate ability to take the ball away it won't matter. Lots of guys can arrive late and drop their shoulder. That blends to irrelevance after a while.

Punting needs to mature in a hurry. Botts didn't have a long transition period once he was the guy, but I remember all the hatred toward Bosher in his early days. I'd watch him in warmups and he was great but it initially didn't translate to the field.

Coley had no say so at all at fsu and Jimbo led that offense…that offense was really good from a per yards per play avg but also had some discipline problems (penalties)…BUT coley did a great job at identifying defense tendacies from quarter to quarter from the booth…Gameday wise he is unproven but is considered a smart coach fwiw

Duke would last 2 games if we did that

Why? We've already showed a load of examples of guys - some even "smaller" and with less wiggle - who received a lot of carries.

Personally, I compare it to Jacquizz Rodgers' sophomore year. Rodgers was about 5' 7" 185 pounds.

He got 273 carries for 1440 yards (5.3 average).
He scored 21 times running the ball.
He caught 78 (!) passes for 522 yards (6.7) and 1 TD.
He therefore touched the ball 351 times as a smallish sophomore.

If Duke averages 25 touches a game - 20 carries and 5 catches - he'll touch the ball 288 times during the regular season. For us to get to the type of numbers Awsi has outlined, we'd have to implement some sort of read-option for at least 5-8 carries from Stephen Morris and Dallas Crawford. Then, the rest of the backs would have to chip in another 5-8 carries. I believe that would get us closer to the foundation we all hope to see.

On offense, my first concern is Stephen Morris, lets not forget he only completed 58% of his passes, his accuracy must improve, too many times our offense ran hot and cold, and Morris was at the heart of it. He ended with a flourish, but he needs to be more accurate and get that to percentage to 65% and this offense will be lethal. And yes I know, there were drops throughout the season, God I still replay the beginning of the ND game in my nightmares, but still too many times Morris ran hot and cold in a game. In the running game, find the compliment to Duke, Dillard? I'm told he has really leaned up and worked his *** off and has come to camp in great shape, he arrived last year with a lot of baby fat, but that is not the case this year, and that he has some wiggle to his game, that he is not just a north/south runner. Gus Edwards? I like his tape, showed good vision, has great size.

On Defense, it's simple D-line, D-line, D-line. Porter needs to stay healthy, he is disgustingly strong, he tested at 33 reps and I'm told from my source, he is still not at full strength from the appendectomy. McCord is progressing brilliantly from a conditioning standpoint, he's at 236 now, and should be over 240 by the fall, and was told, that he could ball with that weight. Also, my "source" told me that Jelani Hamilton is now 100% and fully recovered from his knee injury, so keep an eye out for him. As the D-line goes, so goes the defense. And that is true on any team.
