They do not want to put a 3-loss team into this playoff gimmick.

Clemson beat SMU straight up, 12 hours ago. They are still ranked and seeded below them and they get to play on the road against Texas. Clemson has a loss against Georgia and South Carolina, but a bad one to Louisville, just like Alabama
