Coley and the offense

I just don't understand. How do you completely scrap plays that are working?

I saw us do some great stuff in the 1st half, only to never be seen again.

Miami is missing four of their most explosive players on offense due to injury. Coley, Dorsett, Duke and Scott (only played very late) were not available. We basically only had two wide receivers available for the entire game.

It would be a tough task to ask the offense to score efficiently with that many impact players out. Our three and four wide receiver sets consisted of

Walford
Hurns
Crawford
Waters
Clements/Lewis

It is amazing we still put up over 500 yards of offense. Miami was exploiting Duke by matching our slot (burns/waters) against their LBs. Duke finally adjusted and used a nickel DB with coverage over the top.

probably why jimbo did not put up a fight when he left over the summer. Why not do more slow deliberate offense when your defense is getting killed. take down the number of possessions Duke got.

I'm sitting here watching the 1st half and saying to myself "Man Coley is actually calling a nice game. Where have all these plays/routes been all year?"

The dude was using the middle of the field, the flats, the running game, new formations, etc etc etc.

Then in the 2nd half we went right back to the old offense. Verticals and hitch routes on the outside. Didn't expose the middle at all. It was like a tale of 2 different OC's.

Anybody else notice that?

I've been one of Coley's biggest critics....and I completely agree with what you're saying.

That whole first half I was thinking to myself that I may have too quick to judge him...maybe he needs more time. Then the 2nd half happened and all of the things I hate about his playcalling reappear.

I'll say this though, he's definitely the lesser of the evils. While I don't think Coley is a playcaller on the big time level, he's better at what he does than some of other coaches on this current staff.

So to sum up, he's the prettiest fat girl. He must be Dorito's biggest fan cause every day Dorito is here delays the eventual negative attention that will at some point come Coley's way.

Felt we could of ran more, lean on the running game. Especially when we had the lead early. There were some drives where we would get a first down then go spread to throw the ball. Felt we could of pounded duke to submission but at one point we were close 2 to 1 passing.

My feeling, why did we throw almost 50 times. makes no sense. We were running at will against them. Seems to me, these coaches get to cute. with the way we were running no need for an empty set with first and goal.

I lay the second half on both Coley and Morris. For the first time all year, Morris is looking over the middle and taking what the defense was giving. We can make a living with that. When we went to the 5 wide look, Morris reverted back to what he was. Coley is not an idiot and should have pushed him back to taking what the Defense is giving.

Also, get Clements some of Crawford's carries. He is ready and gets it going much faster than Crawford. Not knocking Crawford, I just do not believe he is a bell cow. Also, his body makeup does not match his running style. If you are going to run like he does, you need to be 220 lbs. Our RB stable is not as full as it should be.

The offense played well enough yesterday to get the win. Even with kicking a bunch of FGs from the Redzone. We need to get Griffin in here so we have a "win" guy down in the redzone to throw the fade to. At the beginning of the season, I thought Rashawn Scott was going to be that guy until he got hurt.

We put up 30 points and 550 yards, so it's hard to rag on Coley, but he still left a lot to be desired today. Seeing that they couldn't come close to stopping Dallas or any of the RBs, we should have pounded them like we did UNC and Wake in the 4th quarters, but we went 4 and 5 wide more than we ever have this season, and not just when it was 38 or 45-30. We did it at 31-30 and 28-27 and throughout the game. Running more would have also milked the clock and kept our sorry excuse for a defense off the field. That said, it's still hard to get really upset with 30 points and 550 yards missing Duke, Dorsett and Coley.

THIS RIGHT HERE...I've never played football, and only watch from tv, but this is my problem, especially the way our defense was playing, run the ball and run the clock. Why get cute. We threw the ball 50 times, for what, we ran at will. Duke threw it 24 times. We may not have the horses, but ****, Duke does not either, they called a better game. We had those type of numbers with 2nd and 3rd string guys at rb and wr....coaching!!!

I watched the Boston College v NC State game earlier today. Boston College played such tough-nosed football on the offensive line. They keep coming at you. They want to win the game by coming right at you. I feel our team for the last few years has been trying to win games by basically running around the opposition with our athletes. Get the big play. Hit the home run. Not by being a more physical hard nosed football team.
What I have seen is that our offense (strength of our team) during the course of a game has a tendency to get out of rhythm (4 of our last 5 drives were 5 plays or less), and we put faith in our weak defense to win their part of the game. Poor game day coaching strategy IMO

right here...coaching!

He's got a mental midget for. QB. any sign of pressure he folds. Can't wait til he's gone

maybe so, but last year the defense was we were young and no consistency. This qb looked much better last year. He should not have thrown the ball 50 times yesterday, especially if he is a mental midget...that's on coaching, run the ball they could not stop it. Why on first and goal you run an empty set. power them to death!

even more reason to run it, 50 times!!

Obvious answer is that Coley scripts his first 15 or so plays then calls them as the game goes on after that

We never got a chance to run because our defense could never get a stop.

People keep saying he won't throw to the middle of the field, but its hard to do that when your play calls dont have a receiver in the middle of the field. Coley likes to call plays that go out or down field. It's obvious by watching it that when receivers are crossing over the middle Morris was willing to throw to them. Without going back through the film of every game, I would be willing to bet we have a WR going over the middle of the field for a 5-10 yard pass only about 50% of the pass plays (I mean an actual WR crossing, slanting, dragging, etc, not some TE coming back on a delayed route). Then add in the run plays and you have a defense that knows that in 40 plays, if half are pass and half are run, they dont need to cover the middle of the field past the LOS, because 1 in 4 plays there might be an actual receiver in the middle of the field. Then factor in that 1 in 4 plays, we might not throw to that receiver as the primary read.

I almost wonder how Coley's offense would look against Dnofrio's defense. The space Dnofrio leaves open the most, is the space Coley avoids most.

The 1st half of the Duke game looked great. Series of drives like that make me question if what I felt about Coley is correct, but then the next half rolls around and I ask myself who is calling the plays, because this is completely different.
