Coley Already Playing The "If It's Dead Even" Card...

His name was Kirby Freeman. Kirby has ingratiated himself to the Cane Fam after rallying back the Canes defeating our most hated rival. Upon transferring to Baylor after being told Freshmen would get 1st shot at starting, Kirby got the Baylor QB job, a la Jake Heaps, notwithstanding his penchant for throwing interceptions at his previous stop, . He started that first game. Was that team true freshmen worried? No. Were the coaches worried? No. And true to form, Kirby went on to toss a couple of passes to the other team’s defenders… and the true Freshman came in to finish the game. And that competition was not even as close as this UM camp is right now. Now granted that that true freshman was far more mobile, but he didn’t have the smarts nor the accuracy of the Messiah! Let Jake Heaps start. It’s really not about who is starting, but who finishes.

Because the first sign that JH (not Jacory Harris) is struggling, or tossing ints, the Messiah will be sure to be shooed in. So relax Canes, Kaaya will get his…sooner than later.

Actually Freeman was replaced after his first interception [...and after demonstrating total futility in moving the team] . He came back in in the 4Q with the score 41-13 and finished the game.

"...finished the game" in garbage time for Wake Forest and in order NOT to thrash the confidence of that true Freshmen, who proceeded to start EVERY game for Baylor when he was healthy.

I get all that. I just thought this might help you keep it straight when you tell it again.

if it is dead even.. wouldn't we want it to be Heaps?

red shirt Kaaya so next year he can be twice as good and have another year

Kaaya will not red shirt even if Heaps starts. He will get his reps to gain experience this year. Wouldnt be surprised if he gets a start vs A&M. Expect to see Kaaya get at least 2 series per game even if Heaps holds his own and or Ryan Williams gets the nod by mid year. Schnellenberger used to do that for all of his backups in almost every game.

I simply wouldn't risk a freshman's psychi (especially a very promising freshman) by starting him in a national opener against a decent opponent on the road if a good alternative is available.

Poor Olson, probably wont play a game ina UM uniform, but life goes on.

Probably true...but he's got no one to blame but himself.

Dude is a freshman. If he had any sort of balls, he would say "**** this" and work his **** off to win the job back. Now, I don't know if he has the skill to ultimately beat Kaaya. But, he needs to develop a chip on his shoulder (the good, I'm-going-to-prove-these-fat-*****-wrong kind) or else he's not going to play many games anywhere worth mentioning.

Kaaya just gets it. Everything I've seen and read about him applies that he wants to be great. You reap what you sow.

Olsen on the other hand, while very talented, seems to be one of those guys that has his focus split between too many things. He's not 100% committed to the task like Kaaya seems to be. He is comfortable.....Kaaya is not.

That's not good news on Olsen coming from his biggest supporter.

I've yet to see this "talent" everybody speaks of. I see a QB with average size, an average arm and average accuracy with an above average last name.

some of his throws in the highlight reels from camp have been very impressive. id like the kid to stay and fight for his job.

Olsen not even getting a good education out of his "wasted" journey here... "For now, here long term " ? Brilliant.

NO. Redshirt Kaaya and you lose the year. Let him play this year, and get the experience so he can definitely be the starter next year. i think he might overtake the competition and end up the starter sometime during this season, anyway.

I agree with this. If he's as good as people think he will be, he won't be here for 5 years anyway. If he's not good, then who cares?

So true, if you have a freshman that worked his butt off from high school to prepare for his college football career and is now in the running as a 1st team QB. Yet you have a current QB not taking care of business to put himself in position to become a starter. I won't have sympathy for the kid it's like he wants the spot handed to him.

Kaaya taking this job.

I think he wants a "place at the table".

Postscript: I always envisioned Dan Morgan doing this at least once a week.

On the bright side, the defensive coordinator for UL sucks, so if kaaya does play he gets his first experience against a terrible defense.

I agree if it's really tied and there is no appreciable difference you go with the guy who has experience. Also that way if Heaps sucks ****, you can give Kaaya a shot whereas if Kaaya gets the start and has the deer in the headlights look, even if you being in Heaps you have already burned the kids shirt needlessly.

If it's tied, give it to Heaps and see if we can get by with him.

I would assume that if either one has a substantial lead in late August, he would start at Louisville, so that the dead- or close-to-dead-even case is the only one worth discussing. Maybe Coley is limiting the answer to "what if even" in the interests of not belaboring the obvious. Would you rather he spend 5 or 10 minutes explaining that if Heaps is way ahead he would start Heaps while if Kaaya is way ahead he would start Kaaya. I would rather he get right to the crux of the matter, which is what he would do if they were more or less even.
