...Plus some other tidbits from Barry Jackson's column. I actually respect Jackson's Canes coverage but he really should have asked Coley "How many times in your career have you seen a QB competition actually be dead even?"

CHATTER

### What if Jake Heaps (a former starter for BYU and Kansas) and freshman Brad Kaaya end up about even in the UM quarterback competition? “If it’s dead even, then the experience probably overrides not having it,” offensive coordinator James Coley said Friday.

Besides his ability to see the field, coaches love Kaaya’s instincts, accuracy and knack for escaping pressure with his feet. UM people cite Heaps’ pre-snap recognition among his greatest strengths.

Kaaya’s high school coach said he’s not a typical teenager. As Kaaya noted Friday: “I would stay up until 1 a.m. on school nights watching film in high school. I sacrificed having that social life and going out a lot.”

He was very superstitious earlier in his life --- he felt he needed to knock on wood four times before he put on his helmet --- but stopped doing that last year because “I figured I don’t need it. Let my talent just win games.”

Kaaya has established relationships with two Heisman Trophy winning UM quarterbacks: Vinny Testaverde (“I’ve talked to him a whole bunch”) and Gino Torretta (“he gave me good advice”). He studies New England’s Tom Brady a lot on tape because the Patriots “run a lot of our play fakes, play actions and protections.”

### As for Kevin Olsen, we hear his suspension was not an extension of last year’s bowl suspension but a new one for a new failed drug test.

“For now, I’m definitely here longterm,” Olsen responded when I asked him about possibly transferring. An associate say Olsen was discouraged when Heaps was brought aboard, though Olsen insists he never viewed it as “a bad thing.”

Doesn't look like he's playing the dead even/experience card. Looks like he was axed a question and answered it smartly.

And honestly...if it was theoretically dead even, what coach in their right mind would opt for inexperience in a road season opener?

Olsen seems too mentally fragile to be a QB. Feeling down cause they brought in someone else is not a trait you want your team leader to have IMO

His name was Kirby Freeman. Kirby has ingratiated himself to the Cane Fam after rallying back the Canes defeating our most hated rival. Upon transferring to Baylor after being told Freshmen would get 1st shot at starting, Kirby got the Baylor QB job, a la Jake Heaps, notwithstanding his penchant for throwing interceptions at his previous stop, . He started that first game. Was that team true freshmen worried? No. Were the coaches worried? No. And true to form, Kirby went on to toss a couple of passes to the other team’s defenders… and the true Freshman came in to finish the game. And that competition was not even as close as this UM camp is right now. Now granted that that true freshman was far more mobile, but he didn’t have the smarts nor the accuracy of the Messiah! Let Jake Heaps start. It’s really not about who is starting, but who finishes.

Because the first sign that JH (not Jacory Harris) is struggling, or tossing ints, the Messiah will be sure to be shooed in. So relax Canes, Kaaya will get his…sooner than later.

The coaches on CIS with nothing on the line and nothing to lose by making dumb decisions.

Kaaya just gets it. Everything I've seen and read about him applies that he wants to be great. You reap what you sow.

Olsen on the other hand, while very talented, seems to be one of those guys that has his focus split between too many things. He's not 100% committed to the task like Kaaya seems to be. He is comfortable.....Kaaya is not.

Just to be clear, I'm not even criticizing them if they opt for experience if the competition is close enough. I just think the "dead even" play is phony and could be a pretty strong tell of which way they're leaning. A more honest answer would be "Yeah, we value experience and it could give Jake the edge in the end.". The poster is right in that it's a smart remark as there's really no reason to publicly elevate Kaaya or Heaps over one another.

At this point with Olsen I wonder if they'd throw in a less than 100% Ryan Williams over him if need be.

Actually Freeman was replaced after his first interception. He came back in in the 4Q with the score 41-13 and finished the game.

I mean, obviously what you said sounds better, but aren't we splitting hairs at that point?

if it is dead even.. wouldn't we want it to be Heaps?

red shirt Kaaya so next year he can be twice as good and have another year

The way I see it is that UM football wins either way with whoever starts the Louisville game.

If Jake Heaps starts, then 1)

Kaaya doesn't have to be forced to face & read lots of confusing alignments and formations from Georgia former Defensive Coordinator that Kaaya has never seen in live action AND learning in hostile environment. Jake knows that his job is to manage the game, and get the team moving and driving to the Louisville goal line. If UM pulls out the win, then Kaaya personally also wins since he would not have been thrown in the line of hostile fire and would not have lost his confidence in case of a loss with lots of blitzkrieg thrown at Kaaya by Louisville DC & Petrino. Kaaya could get the start at Arkie State game (after doing well at garbage time during FAMU game) never to relinquish it that starting job again.

If Kaaya starts, then 2) you have to pray for the win. You also hope that he doesn't get his confidence crushed with a loss that exposes his inexperience at reading a Louisville defense that will likely move in and out of different formations before the snap of the ball. If Kaaya starts, then you just finally have to have the confidence in the coaches that Coley & AG are secured in the confidence that they know what they're doing AND so will start the game pounding the ball with Duke, Gus, Yearby and Tucker, while staying away from long passes that take a long time to materialize. I look for the UM to jump on Louisville fast and early to mitigate much risks to Kaaya being forced to having to put the game on his shoulders.

Either way, one can't wait for September 1st 2014.

GO CANES!

Heaps teach him to read a D and we good #KaayaorBust

Yep. I just kinda found this comment from Coley (relatively speaking) more telling than a lot of the other stuff we're all over-analyzing.
