'Canes snag pledge from 2016 Flanagan LB/S Devin Gil
(Mark Randall / Sun Sentinel)
By Ryan S. Clark
On Sunday, Devin Gil went to the University of Miami for junior day. On Monday, he decided that he'd like to potentially spend the next four years in Coral Gables.
The Flanagan 2016 linebacker/safety prospect took to Twitter and announced he had committed to Miami, adding to what is becoming a recruiting class earmarked by some of the higher-rated talent in both Broward and Palm Beach counties.
At 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds, Gil can be deployed at inside linebacker, outside linebacker, safety and even defensive end, said Flanagan coach Devin Bush.
"He's very versatile, he's scheme versatile," Bush said. "He has a high football IQ. Very intelligent. He can pick up on stuff fast. He's determined, focused and a smart football player. Great ball skills too. He's a great kid too. You're just talking about a great kid. He doesn't get into trouble. He has a 3.2 core GPA. He doesn't complain. He's a yes sir, no sir kid. He's just a good kid."
Gil along with Bush's son, Devin Jr., will be two of the 10 returning starters back from Flanagan's team that finished 13-1, reached the Class 8A state semifinals and lost 16-12 to state runner-up, Miami Columbus.
Bush said Gil will be used in the role Adrienne Talan occupied switching back and forth between linebacker and safety in the Falcons' base 3-4 defense. He continued by saying that Talan, who is mired between offers from Pittsburgh and TCU, is a little faster but Gil knows how to operate within the scheme.
He continued by saying Gil and Devin Bush Jr. know the system so well they're given the freedom to select between three calls and make the adjustments needed prior to a play. When Bush Jr., a four-star prospect, suffered an injury early in the playoffs, Gil was placed into this role as Flanagan continued to win en route to the best season in school history.
"Let me tell you about these two kids," Bush said. "They make a lot of the calls. They get everyone lined up. Between those two, I ask them, 'Do you like this? Can we do this? How do you feel about this?' They go and they can call different checks, recognize different formations and if I signal something, and they don't like it, I trust them so much they almost call the calls themselves."
Bush, a former Florida State star, said Gil's commitment was sudden but not too surprising given that Miami has been paying attention to Flanagan over the last few seasons.
"We know with the reputation we're going to create for ourselves and the talent we have, [colleges] are going to come," Bush said. "Miami does have the inside track. They've been watching us and him progress."
Gil is the 12th commitment the Hurricanes have received for their 2016 class, according to 247 Sports.
The group includes St. Thomas Aquinas receiver Sam Bruce, Santaluces linebacker Zach McCloud and Wellington receiver Ahmmon Richards, the Sun Sentinel's Offensive Player of the Year for Class 8A-7A-6A in Palm Beach County.
All three are rated as four-star prospects while Gil has not yet been rated by 247.
"I was watching some of his tape the other day and was like "OK"," Bush said. "When I know he's at safety, throw the ball if you want to. It may get picked off. Try it."

GIL TO STAY IN SOUTH FLORIDA

Pembroke Pines (Fla.) Flanagan linebacker/defensive back Devin Gil becomes the fifth junior to commit to Al Golden and the Miami Hurricanes since yesterday.
Just days after reeling in his second scholarship offer of the recruiting process from Al Golden and the Miami Hurricanes, Devin Gil consulted with the ones closest to him and wasted no time committing to the local institution on Monday evening. Gil, 6-foot-1.5, 205-pounds, is a versatile defender who possesses the traits to play either safety or linebacker at the collegiate level.
"I loved the facilities, I like how coach Al Golden takes cares of his p_layer_s, and that just makes me feel a part of their team," Gil said. "When I went to their junior day, I loved how they described their defense and how their safeties are free.
"I like how they've created some of their linebackers, like (Denzel) Perryman. I also look up to some of their players."
Gil, who's in possession of an additional scholarship offer from Temple, says Golden's staff was filled with joy when he informed them of his decision to stay home. Gil becomes the fifth junior to commit to the Hurricanes since yesterday.
"They were very excited," Gil said. "They welcomed me like I was a part of their family. (Defensive backs) coach (Paul) Williams is the one I talk to the most. He's a cool and funny guy. He talks to me like I"m his own already and I like that."
Make it five 2016 commitments for Canes in 48 hours with addition of Flanagan LB Devin Gil
The Miami Hurricanes keep picking up commitments for their top-ranked 2016 signing class. If only that Signing Day wasn't 53 weeks away.
Monday, less than 48 hours after picking up four commits on Junior Day, UM added another in Pembroke Pines Flanagan's Devin Gil (6-1, 200).
Unranked among recruits by 247Sports, Gil was the Falcons' third-leading tackler last season (64, six for loss) and had three interceptions and 1 1/2 sacks while playing both outside linebacker and safety.
"[UM] saw the way he played on the ball at safety, saw him down in the box when my son Devin [Bush] got hurt," Flanagan coach Devin Bush Sr. said. "It shows you the type of versatility you're going to get. They offered Gil last week. Temple and Miami are his only offers. The kid grew up liking Miami. I guess he got real excited about it after he was there Sunday. Right now, they got him listed as an athlete. The kid is so versatile he can play anywhere for them."
Bush Jr. and Stanford Samuels, a 2017 recruit and cornerback, also have Hurricane offers according to their coach. Flanagan reached the Class 8A state semifinals last season before losing to Columbus.
"I give everybody a shot with my son," Bush Sr. said. "My son is completely wide open. Because of where I went [Florida State] that's not a deterrent. The idea is to pick the best place for him. Devin has about 30 offers. Stanford has a lot of big SEC offers."
Bush Sr. said he's not sure why Gil isn't more highly regarded. But he expects everyone to start jumping on him as he nears his senior year.
"Just versatile," Bush Sr. said of Gil. "Talented, talented kid."

Flanagan's Devin Gil decommits from Miami
Flanagan 2016 safety Devin Gil has decommitted from Miami, according to a text from Falcons coach Devin Bush on Monday.
Gil committed to Miami in January and becomes the second player in the 2016 class to decommit within the last week. Pahokee running back McArthur Burnett re-opened his recruiting in the wake of Oxbridge Academy running back Travis Homer commitment, giving the Hurricanes four running backs.
The three-star prospect, who has around 15 offers, recently took an unofficial visit to Michigan.
Michigan has been an active player in South Florida since Jim Harbaugh took over. Harbaugh was an instructor at a camp held by Bush earlier in June. After the camp, a number of area players were offered by Michigan including Gil and four-star linebacker Devin Bush Jr.
Both Bush and his son were at Michigan on Monday. Bush spoke at a camp while his son took an unofficial visit.

Miami’s 2016 recruiting class, while still the largest group of commits in the country, dropped by one over the weekend.
Safety Devin Gil, from Pembroke Pines-Flanagan, told UM coaches he wanted to explore his options, according to Canesport. Gil was visiting Michigan at the time.
Gil, a three-star recruit per Rivals and 247Sports, was the lowest-rated of three safeties committed to UM. The others are three-stars Cedrick Wright (36th among 2016 safeties, according to 247Sports’ composite ratings) and James Pierre (49th). Gil, listed at 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds, is ranked 63rd.
In recent weeks, 247Sports reported, Gil picked up offers from Michigan, as well as FAU, Massachusetts, USF, UCF, Ohio and Colorado.
He is the teammate of top linebacker prospect Devin Bush Jr., a target of Michigan and Florida State (as well as Miami). Bush visited Ann Arbor along with Gil and another teammate.
The Hurricanes’ group of 22 commits, which is ranked No. 2 nationally by Rivals and No. 4 by 247Sports, is the largest class in the country. Florida State and Michigan State have 18 commits each.
