Don't want to belabor, but just back in Atlanta and want to clarify. No one is saying the NIL era will suddenly turn Georgia Tech into a championship contender. Not likely. Just the fact that alums have money and influence. In this new age, money is going to talk and some programs may rise up. Case in point: Canes realize they can no longer just recruit off the glory years, but are smartly competing in the money game.
The notion that Clemson somehow gets who they want, even above Georgia, is silly and outdated. There was some credence back in the Mark Richt era when Clemson pulled Deshaun Watson Charlie Whitehurst. Trevor Lawrence and the like. Kirby Smart put an end to that.
Fact is, Clemson recruits Florida about as well as it does neighboring Georgia.
If you know HS football in Georgia, only a few top players can be found in walking distance of the GT campus. They're within probably a 70 mile perimeter of Atlanta, then rural outposts and finally south Georgia.
Another false narrative is GT admission standards are dramatically higher and one needs to be a budding rocket scientist or mechanical engineer. Vast majority of athletes are business administration majors. Also gotten creative recently with literature, media and communications as well as history, technology and society majors.
Again, the large power programs like Ohio State, Georgia and Alabama aren't going away, but the NIL era - between HS recruiting and the portal - is unchartered waters and some dormant programs from major conferences may pop up. Obviously, Miami appears ready to breakout, but Georgia Tech and SMU (Dallas location, wealthy alumni, Texas talent and now in a major conference) have potential to be competitive down the road.
