CB Emmanuel Karnley commits to Miami

I respectfully disagree with the DJ Ivey spin on this one - Ivey didn’t magically become mentally tough. He wasn’t performing on the field, was being booed and it hurts to be booed - but that’s what he signed up for when he decided his career would be in intercollegiate and professional athletics.

Let’s not train, or begin sending this message to our young people that they deserve to be praised for their achievements and bright moments but are being unfairly criticized when they “repeatedly” fail to meet the mark.

This is a game, and guys (Ivey/Karnley/whomever) completely understand what they’re signing up for - not to mention that they now are being paid to do it (I for one ABSOLUTELY agree that they should be paid)….BUT, when you don’t get it done on the field and repeatedly cost the team with your play, you WILL most definitely hear it the same way from the opposite spectrum as you’d hear it if you’re out there making plays and helping the team win games.
It goes beyond booing- the stuff on social media and this forum was weirdly personal. People were frustrated with the program in general and took it out disproportionately on one player.

It was one of many factors that hurt his performance. Certainly not the only one. But why are we hurting instead of helping? What good does it do?

On top of that, many people were just flat wrong about the kid. They said he had no talent- bad feet, slow, FCS player, etc. Clearly he has talent, and all those people were wrong.

Agreed 100%. We all get frustrated with the program and the players. We had a player potentially cost us a championship game because of a bone headed personal foul. But why get on here and bash the ever loving **** out of a player. It serves no purpose that will be helpful. Coach Prime recently told his players to stay off social media. He said something like “why are you worried about a fat guy on a couch in his mom’s basement”. Truer words have never been spoken. But the point is, that negative talk was negatively influencing his program to the point he had to address it. These are young adults who don’t necessarily know how to take harsh criticism. So think again if you feel bashing our players never gets back to them or affects them.

Respectfully, why bring up the Ivey stuff in relation to Karnley? It's a different situation entirely. Ivey played poorly, repeatedly here, and - I agree - some people went overboard in reaction to his play at UM. People saw a little tape on Karnley at Zona and it was pretty ghastly. AFAIK no one has offered any good tape of him to counter that impression.

Just let people get the moping out of their system. If the kid plays well here everyone - well not actually everyone, this is CIS, a special place - will be happy and cheer for him.

If I were him I'd come in with a chip on my shoulder knowing a bunch yahoos on the Internet didn't think I could play at Miami.

Because this kid will get beat. That’s part of the position. And if there is already a built-in narrative that he stinks, the reaction will be disproportionate. I don’t want history to repeat itself to the point that it begins to impact performance.

Mopes ruin everything.

This is a win, no other way around it. This elevates the floor of the room. Speed, lenght, youth and experience are all net positives.

Also, More competition for a room that desperately needs it. Imagine seeing our worst performing room play this season then complaining about adding competition to said room.

Miserable people on here I tell you.

Go Canes!

with all due respect DJ single handily cost us games. he had some of the worst mental breakdowns imaginable.

I put a lot more weight on the opinion of people like you, @JayCane20 and @Memnon who have actually watched this guy play. There are also coaches from teams who play good defense (not UM) who value the player. That's the fun of this stuff, people have different opinions and we won't know until they develop.

On paper, this seems like a traits-based evaluation at a position where traits are very important. I am excited to watch this kid on Greentree and hope he develops more than other players we've had recently at the position.
Yes I agree. And for what it's worth, I love what the staff has/is doing with the DB room as a whole. I'm 100% confident Cuse doesn't have the passing success they did with this potential DB room (portal commits w/ O'Connor, Lucas incl). Again, my response centered around the thought that Karnley was being brought in as a penciled in starter but I do recognize that it was early in the portal process.

Honestly, I hope the kid balls out. We need all the playmakers we can get in order to make sure this season wasn't an aberration.

How’s the DC situation coming along?
